Jack Betts, "Spider-Man" Actor, Dies at 96
Jack Betts, who starred in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" (2002) and over a dozen Spaghetti Western films, has died at the age of 96.
Betts died Thursday in his sleep at his Los Osos, Calif. home, his nephew, Dean Sullivan, said.
Jack Betts
Born Jack Fillmore Betts (saying he bore a relation to the 13th POTUS Millard Fillmore) on April 11, 1929 in Jersey City, NJ, he grew up in Miami, where he eventually studied theater at the University of Miami. Afterward, he moved to New York City, where he made his Broadway debut in 1953's "Richard III".
When a friend asked him to help with an audition for Lee Strasberg's famed nonprofit, The Actors Studio, the director of the prestigious acting school granted him a three-year scholarship to study there. As a result, the venerated Elia Kazan later cast him in a production of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".
He later returned to Broadway for Kazan's 1959 production of "Sweet Bird of Youth", as well as a late '70s revival of "Dracula", in which he once portrayed the eponymous count as Raul Julia's standby.
Betts' first film credit was in 1959's "The Bloody Brood", and in 1966 he was cast as the title character in Franco Giraldi's "Sugar Colt", billed as Hunt Powers for the first time, that kicked off a string of credits in over a dozen Spaghetti Westerns through the 1970s.
On the television side, Betts racked up several appearances in daytime soaps, including "General Hospital", "The Young Marrieds", "The Edge of Night", "The Doctors", "Another World", "All My Children", "Falcon Crest", "Search for Tomorrow", "Guiding Light", "Generations", and "The Young and the Restless".
His other notable arcs included episodes for "Perry Mason" and The F.B.I." as well as turns in popular series like "Gunsmoke", "Seinfeld", "Mad TV", "Frasier", "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Friends", "The Mentalist", and "Monk".
Betts was great friends with "Everybody Loves Raymond" star Doris Roberts, whom he met at The Actors Studio in the '50s; the two shared a home from the late '80s until she died in 2016.
Jack Betts in 'Spider-Man'
In "Spider-Man", Betts notably portrayed Henry Balkan, the Oscorp Technologies board chairman, who booted Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn from the company, kicking off the Green Goblin's villainous arc. Later on in the movie, Osborn parrots back the phrase to Balkan as he vaporizes the board in an attack on Times Square while gleefully shouting: 'Out, am I?'.
Additional film credits include 1993's "Falling Down," with Michael Douglas and Robert Duvall, the 1995 Val Kilmer-starring "Batman Forever", and 1998's "Gods and Monsters" opposite Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser.
In addition to his nephew, Betts' survivors include his nieces, Lynne and Gail, and his sister, Joan, who turns 100 in November.
Following the news of his death, Beverly Hills Playhouse shared a tribute to the late star on Instagram, writing: 'Our beloved Jack Betts passed away peacefully at home. It is a sad day for the BHP as we have enjoyed his presence for so many years. There are actors who credit him with their not giving up because of his encouragement. We were so fortunate to have enjoyed his great spirit, passion and true dedication to the work. There was only ever one like this and we are the richer for having his presence in our theatre. Rest in peace, Jack.'

Disney, Webtoon Ink Deal to Bring 100 Marvel, Star Wars & More Titles to Webcomics App
Yara Sameh Spider-Man, Captain America, Darth Vader, Beauty and the Beast, and more from Disney's intellectual-property treasure chest are coming to Webtoon — with about 100 titles from the Mouse House to hit the popular webcomics app in the next years. The deal between Webtoon Entertainment and Disney spans webcomics featuring iconic characters from Disney, Marvel, 20th Century Studios, and Star Wars. Those will include existing comics and graphic novels from Disney's catalog reformatted for Webtoon's vertical-scroll app, in addition to all-new original titles that are currently in development. The Disney webcomics will be available in a dedicated section of the Webtoon English-language app. Globally, Webtoon has around 155 million monthly active users. Financial terms of the multiyear deal aren't being disclosed. "The Webtoon pact is one of the biggest we have ever done,' said Daniel Fink, senior VP, head of digital innovation at Disney Consumer Products. The first Disney-owned webcomic to debut will be the Amazing Spider-Man later in August. It will be followed by Marvel's Avengers, Star Wars, Alien and 'As Old as Time: A Twisted Tale' (with Belle and the Beast). Webtoon will be promoting the new Disney partnership at New York Comic Con, which runs October 9-12. In Webtoon's freemium model, the first few episodes of a webcomic are free to read; to get full access, users must purchase in-app 'coins' and redeem them for premium purchases. At press time, the pricing of the Disney comics on Webtoon was not available. The launch of Disney comics on Webtoon comes after the companies had been in talks for about a year. Fink pointed out that webcomics readership has grown dramatically in recent years and has attracted 'people who are not traditional comics readers.' Webtoon's base of millions of monthly active users for its English-language app was appealing to Disney, and Fink sees the deal as bolstering its reach internationally and with Gen Z audiences. 'We have such amazing stories at Disney and Marvel, and we want our stories to reach as many as people as possible,' Fink added. Both Disney and Webtoon say none of the webcomics produced under their deal will use AI technology. 'It's all traditional creative,' continued Fink. The new webcomics will be produced by Webtoon with Disney's approval, but the companies aren't sharing what characters will be in the mix except to say the titles will range 'from superhero epics to galaxy-spanning adventures.' Disney talked to multiple players in the webcomics space and 'we saw that Webtoon was the clear leader,' according to Fink. In addition, Webtoon Entertainment is based in L.A. (while its parent company, Naver Corp., is based in South Korea). 'Big picture, it was a pretty easy decision,' Fink noted. Disney joined Webtoon's roster of other content partners, which includes Warner Bros. Discovery's DC Comics, Discord and K-pop giant HYBE. For Webtoon's part, the company saw a huge opportunity to team with Disney, whose brands are 'among the most legendary, creative and successful in the industry,' said Yongsoo Kim, chief strategy officer and head of global at Webtoon. 'We believe teaming up together is mutually beneficial.' Webtoon Entertainment's brands and platforms, in addition to the Webtoon app, include user-generated fiction app Wattpad, Webtoon Productions, Studio N, Studio LICO, Webtoon Unscrolled, Line Manga and eBookJapan. In June 2024, Webtoon Entertainment went public with an IPO on the Nasdaq exchange. For 2024, the company reported $1.35 billion in revenue (up 5.1%) and a net loss of $152.9 million (versus a net loss of $144.8 million the year prior). Between 2017 and 2023, the company says, it paid out $2.8 billion to creators, with the top 100 creators earning more than $1 million and overall creators were paid an average of $48,000. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

"Spider-Verse" Spinoff Movie "Spider-Punk" in Works with Daniel Kaluuya
Yara Sameh The Spider-Verse is expanding once again. 'Spider-Punk,' a spinoff of 2023's animated hit 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,' is in early development at Sony Pictures Animation. Daniel Kaluuya, who voiced the character in the comic book sequel, and Ajon Singh are developing and co-writing the feature. Plot details haven't been sorted out, but the film will center on the punk-rock version of Spider-Man — aka Hobie Brown — whose main weapon is his guitar. Kaluuya's character was introduced — along with many other iterations of the beloved web-slinger — in the multiversal adventure 'Across the Spider-Verse.' He is expected to return in 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,' from producers Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Amy Pascal, who will also produce the 'Spider-Punk' project. It's unclear when 'Spider-Punk' will swing to theaters. For now, 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,' the third entry in the web-slinging trilogy, won't be hitting the theaters until June 25, 2027. Though little is known about the threequel, the story picks up after the cliffhanger at the end of 'Across the Spider-Verse,' with protagonist Miles Morales (the main Spider-Man in this world) as a fugitive on the run while also trying to save his family from imminent danger. Sony's 'Spider-Verse' films have been critical and commercial winners, with the original 2018's 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' grossing $384 million globally — in addition to winning the Oscar for best animated feature — and the sequel amassing an impressive $690 million at the worldwide box office. Kaluuya broke out in 2017 as the Oscar-nominated star of 'Get Out.' The British actor has since appeared on screen in 'Black Panther,' Steve McQueen's crime drama 'Widows,' Jordan Peele's 'Nope' and the Fred Hampton biopic 'Judas and the Black Messiah,' which earned Kaluuya his first Oscar statue. He is also currently developing a live-action 'Barney' movie for A24 and Mattel. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Tom Holland Unveils "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" Set Photos as Production Begins
Yara Sameh Tom Holland is giving fans a brand new look at 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day.' Holland shared Sunday on Instagram two on-set photos with the caption, ''Spider-Man Brand New Day' 1.' Both pics show the actor in costume as the web-slinging hero. He is standing on top of what appears to be an armored vehicle while connected to a stunt wire. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tom Holland (@tomholland2013) Holland's post comes just a day after Sony shared a video on social media of the new Spidey Suit for 'Brand New Day.' The footage sees Holland emerge from the shadows in his new ensemble, which more closely resembles the comic-book version than his previous duds. 'We ready?' Holland asks in the video. The new Spidey Suit has more vivid reds and blues, and features a larger spider symbol than his costumes from 'Spider-Man: Homecoming,' 'Far From Home' and 'No Way Home.' 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' hits theaters on July 31, 2026. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Spider-Man (@spidermanmovie) 'Brand New Day' marks the fourth MCU Spider-Man installment from Sony and Disney after 2021's 'Spider-Man: No Way Home.' In that film, Peter Parker's secret identity is revealed to the entire world, and the young hero must turn to Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange for help. He manages to conjure a spell that makes everyone forget Parker is Spider-Man, but not without some unintended side effects. The spell pulls other web-slingers and their respective villains into Parker's dimension, leading to the viral moment between Holland and Sony's previous Spider-Men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. 'Brand New Day' is based on the Spider-Man comic storyline of the same name. In the comic book story, Parker lands a deal with Mephisto to make the world forget he is Spider-Man and resurrect Aunt May. However, the spell essentially reboots his world and dissolves his marriage with MJ. 'Shang-Chi' helmer Destin Daniel Cretton serves as director on 'Brand New Day.' Jon Bernthal's the Punisher and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, will also appear in the movie. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
