Disney, Webtoon Ink Deal to Bring 100 Marvel, Star Wars & More Titles to Webcomics App
Spider-Man, Captain America, Darth Vader, Beauty and the Beast, and more from Disney's intellectual-property treasure chest are coming to Webtoon — with about 100 titles from the Mouse House to hit the popular webcomics app in the next years.
The deal between Webtoon Entertainment and Disney spans webcomics featuring iconic characters from Disney, Marvel, 20th Century Studios, and Star Wars.
Those will include existing comics and graphic novels from Disney's catalog reformatted for Webtoon's vertical-scroll app, in addition to all-new original titles that are currently in development.
The Disney webcomics will be available in a dedicated section of the Webtoon English-language app. Globally, Webtoon has around 155 million monthly active users.
Financial terms of the multiyear deal aren't being disclosed.
"The Webtoon pact is one of the biggest we have ever done,' said Daniel Fink, senior VP, head of digital innovation at Disney Consumer Products.
The first Disney-owned webcomic to debut will be the Amazing Spider-Man later in August.
It will be followed by Marvel's Avengers, Star Wars, Alien and 'As Old as Time: A Twisted Tale' (with Belle and the Beast). Webtoon will be promoting the new Disney partnership at New York Comic Con, which runs October 9-12.
In Webtoon's freemium model, the first few episodes of a webcomic are free to read; to get full access, users must purchase in-app 'coins' and redeem them for premium purchases.
At press time, the pricing of the Disney comics on Webtoon was not available.
The launch of Disney comics on Webtoon comes after the companies had been in talks for about a year.
Fink pointed out that webcomics readership has grown dramatically in recent years and has attracted 'people who are not traditional comics readers.'
Webtoon's base of millions of monthly active users for its English-language app was appealing to Disney, and Fink sees the deal as bolstering its reach internationally and with Gen Z audiences.
'We have such amazing stories at Disney and Marvel, and we want our stories to reach as many as people as possible,' Fink added.
Both Disney and Webtoon say none of the webcomics produced under their deal will use AI technology. 'It's all traditional creative,' continued Fink.
The new webcomics will be produced by Webtoon with Disney's approval, but the companies aren't sharing what characters will be in the mix except to say the titles will range 'from superhero epics to galaxy-spanning adventures.'
Disney talked to multiple players in the webcomics space and 'we saw that Webtoon was the clear leader,' according to Fink.
In addition, Webtoon Entertainment is based in L.A. (while its parent company, Naver Corp., is based in South Korea). 'Big picture, it was a pretty easy decision,' Fink noted.
Disney joined Webtoon's roster of other content partners, which includes Warner Bros. Discovery's DC Comics, Discord and K-pop giant HYBE.
For Webtoon's part, the company saw a huge opportunity to team with Disney, whose brands are 'among the most legendary, creative and successful in the industry,' said Yongsoo Kim, chief strategy officer and head of global at Webtoon. 'We believe teaming up together is mutually beneficial.'
Webtoon Entertainment's brands and platforms, in addition to the Webtoon app, include user-generated fiction app Wattpad, Webtoon Productions, Studio N, Studio LICO, Webtoon Unscrolled, Line Manga and eBookJapan.
In June 2024, Webtoon Entertainment went public with an IPO on the Nasdaq exchange. For 2024, the company reported $1.35 billion in revenue (up 5.1%) and a net loss of $152.9 million (versus a net loss of $144.8 million the year prior).
Between 2017 and 2023, the company says, it paid out $2.8 billion to creators, with the top 100 creators earning more than $1 million and overall creators were paid an average of $48,000.

Winners announced for third Mexican literature translation contest in Egypt - City Lights - Life & Style
Aiming to deepen cultural ties and boost Spanish-language learning in Egypt, the Mexican embassy and Egypt's National Centre for Translation honoured winners of the third Mexican Literature Translation Contest in Cairo. The Embassy of Mexico in Egypt, in cooperation with the National Centre for Translation at the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, held the award ceremony for the third Mexican Literature Translation Contest into Arabic on 12 August. This annual initiative seeks to support local talent among translators and interpreters, showcase Mexican literature and the Spanish language, and foster cultural ties between the two nations. The ceremony was presided over by Leonora Rueda, Ambassador of Mexico, and Professor Karma Samy, Director of the National Centre for Translation. Leonora Rueda, Ambassador of Mexico, delivers a speech at the award ceremony in the National Centre for Translation. The selected work for translation was Canek, a celebrated novel by Emilio Abreu Gómez and a landmark of Mexican literature. The book recounts the life and rebellion of the Mayan leader Jacinto Canek, blending poetic prose with historical narrative. The first prize, valued at USD 1,000, was awarded to Mohamed Gomaa Tawfik Fadel, a translator and researcher specialising in Spanish and Latin American studies. The contest, launched in January 2024 during the Cairo International Book Fair, attracted 16 finalist translations. The winning work will be published and presented at the Cairo International Book Fair in 2026. # The jury comprised Professors Nadia Gamal El-Din (Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University), Khaled Mohamed Abdel-Moneim (Faculty of Languages and Translation, Al-Azhar University), and Khaled Ibrahim Awad Salem (Higher Institute for Translation, Academy of Arts). Special recognition was given to three other top entries: the first honourable mention went to Noha El-Hag Hassan Abdo; the second to Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed; and the third to Roqaya Mohamed El-Tohami. Abdel-Rahman Essam Abdel-Gawad was named a promising young translator. Ambassador Rueda noted: 'The competition, which began in 2021, has now been institutionalised and has become an important platform for honouring the work of Spanish-language learners and Egyptian translators. I am very glad that the interest of Egyptian youth in learning Spanish, as one of the most widely spoken languages worldwide, and in translating Mexican literature, is on the rise.' The generous support of CEMEX Egypt made it possible to offer the main prize, reflecting the company's ongoing commitment to social responsibility and promoting young Egyptian talent and cultural exchange. This event not only celebrates the art of literary translation but also reaffirms the value of building cultural bridges through literature, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation between Mexico and Egypt. Ryan Reynolds Teases Deadpool's Possible Return in "Avengers: Doomsday"
Yara Sameh Is the foul-mouthed Marvel hero finally joining Earth's Mightiest Heroes? Ryan Reynolds posted Tuesday a cryptic Instagram post teasing fans about the possibility of returning as Deadpool in "Avengers: Doomsday." The post shows a graffiti version of the Avengers logo. He did not include any caption. The logo was previously seen on a flag in 2024's "Deadpool & Wolverine" during a scene where Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine were captured. The photo in the post appears to have been taken from a July 2024 Reddit post, where a user posted pictures of several custom Marvel shirts in anticipation of "Deadpool & Wolverine." However, Reynolds' posting the Avengers logo without comment, as filming on "Avengers: Doomsday" is underway, stirred speculation that he could be preparing to announce his involvement in the movie. "If you are saying what I think you're saying, I'm actually gonna scream," a comment on the post read. Reynolds was notably missing from the lengthy "Avengers: Doomsday" cast list that Marvel unveiled in March during an hours-long live stream, where every individual star's name was revealed one at a time. But after the stream ended, Marvel hinted that it was not the complete cast list – and that other actors could be joining the movie. "There's always room for more," the studio teased. The Merc with a Mouth was last seen in "Deadpool & Wolverine," which brought him to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. While the movie was a massive hit, no sequel has been announced nor has it been confirmed where or when fans will see Deadpool next. During a Variety Actors on Actors segment with Andrew Garfield in December, Reynolds said he would like to see Deadpool function more as a supporting character going forward. "If he comes back, it's going to be in someone's else's movie," he said. Reynolds also told Time magazine in April that he was "writing a little something right now that is an ensemble" involving Deadpool, but did not reveal details. The announced cast list for "Avengers: Doomsday" does include one star from "Deadpool & Wolverine:" Channing Tatum, who made his debut as Gambit in the 2024 "Deadpool" film. Other stars confirmed for the next "Avengers" include Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani
