Interim ministerial appointments crucial ahead of parliament session

New Straits Times10 hours ago
KUANTAN: The appointment of temporary ministers is crucial to handle key issues, especially ahead of the upcoming Parliament session, said Plantations and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Johari, who is also Umno vice-president, said the interim appointments are essential to manage pressing matters in the coming months, particularly during the parliamentary session scheduled from July 21 to August 28.
"(The) NRES(Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry) post became vacant after Nik Nazmi(Nik Ahmad) stepped down, just as the Economy Ministry was left without a minister following Rafizi (Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's) resignation. In such cases, the Prime Minister appoints temporary ministers especially with Parliament about to convene."
Yesterday, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had informed the Cabinet during the July 9 meeting that Johari would assume the responsibilities of NRES Minister effective immediately.
Meanwhile, on June 27, Shamsul Azri said that Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan would carry out the duties of the Economy Minister.
"In Parliament, there are questions that need to be answered. The Economy Ministry, for example, must finalise matters related to the 13th Malaysia Plan and that is why temporary appointments are necessary to address urgent issues over the next one, two, or three months," he told reporters after opening the Kuantan Umno division delegates' meeting here today.
Johari dismissed claims that his appointment signifies Umno gaining dominance in the Cabinet under Anwar, saying that the party only has 26 members of parliaments(MPs).
"How can we dominate the Cabinet? Umno only has 26 MPs....dominance is determined in Parliament, and the unity government collectively has about 148 MPs and that is where the strength lies," he said.
Johari said that he did not attend the meeting between Anwar and several Barisan Nasional ministers and MPs held yesterday at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya.

PM Anwar allocates RM1m to KLFA for football revival in Kuala Lumpur

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an allocation of RM1 million to the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) in support of efforts to revitalise football in the capital city. Anwar said the government consistently encouraged the development of football, which he described as a people's sport that was widely loved and participated in. However, he stressed that emphasis should be placed on infrastructure as a fundamental aspect in advancing the sport. 'This is an opportunity for us to elevate the status of national football, but it has to start from the basics. That is why what was raised just now about collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Higher Education, or other training institutes is important. 'It's not just about funding, but adequate infrastructure is crucial — proper fields, training facilities, training academies — to ensure our children are trained well and in comfort,' he said in his speech at the KLFA's 50th Golden Jubilee celebration here today. Also present were Communications Minister and KLFA patron Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and KLFA president Syed Yazid Syed Omar. Meanwhile, Anwar also urged that sportsmanship be preserved, including proper conduct among supporters, who at times behaved beyond acceptable limits and tarnished the spirit of unity. 'There are groups of supporters that can sometimes get out of control... Losing does not mean the team should be ridiculed,' he said. The Prime Minister also said he had instructed the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to monitor and control any incidents that could harm the image of national football, in line with the goal of sports as a medium of unity and healthy living. He said associations such as KLFA were also responsible for ensuring that sportsmanship and unity continued to be upheld among supporters and players. At the event, KLFA also announced several strategic collaborations, including with the Ministry of Education to strengthen football development at the school level and the Ministry of Youth and Sports in implementing coaching development programmes and initiatives involving youth. - Bernama

Tax, RON95 subsidy, judiciary issues raised in PM's meeting with BN MPs

KUALA TERENGGANU: Issues surrounding taxation, rumours about RON95 petrol subsidies and the judiciary were among the topics discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Barisan Nasional (BN) members of parliament yesterday. Anwar said these were among the matters he addressed during the session with the BN MPs. "This is how it works. Sometimes on Mondays, I meet with Pakatan Harapan (PH) MPs, which is routine. "So, (Deputy Prime Minister) Datuk Seri (Ahmad) Zahid (Hamidi) suggested that I also meet with BN MPs. "I agreed, so we had the meeting yesterday. The BN MPs understood and gave their full cooperation on these matters, and I will continue to engage with them moving forward," he told reporters after a meeting with the state leadership councils of PKR in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan here today. It was reported yesterday that Anwar met with BN MPs at his official residence in Seri Perdana, Putrajaya. Anwar, who is also PKR president, said today's leadership council meeting also touched on current issues including the government's ongoing efforts to combat corruption. "I outlined the steps we've taken against major corruption cases, which have prompted certain groups to unite in attacking us. "That is the key point. For them, corruption no longer seems to be a serious issue. But for us, it remains critical because it concerns governance," he said. Anwar also said he had explained the process for appointing the Chief Justice, reiterating that all parties must respect the procedures outlined in the Federal Constitution.

PM pledges RM1mil to Kuala Lumpur FA, praises grassroots efforts

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim drew laughs when he quipped that Kuala Lumpur FA (KLFA) was the only group that didn't ask him for money — before pledging RM1 million to the association anyway. Speaking at KLFA's 50th Jubilee celebration at Connexion Bangsar South on Saturday, Anwar made the surprise announcement during a speech that also saw the launch of KL City's new kits and logos for the 2025-2026 season. "This is the only event I've attended where no one asked me for funding," said Anwar, prompting laughter from the audience. "So I bid thank you, and I pledge RM1 million to KLFA." The Prime Minister praised KLFA for reviving its legacy and strengthening grassroots football. He lauded the efforts of patron Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and president Syed Yazid Syed Omar, saying their commitment reflects a broader long-term vision. "I once told them not to over-prioritise, but when it comes to facilities, we're willing to support, especially for football, as it has massive appeal and community impact," he said. Anwar also acknowledged football's wider influence on society, noting concerns about hooliganism and stressing the sport's potential as a platform for unity and national pride. "I spoke to the Police earlier today and reminded them to help ensure football remains a force for good," he said. The event not only honoured KLFA's storied past, but reaffirmed its ambition to be a major player in Malaysian football, now backed by renewed government support.
