International Hummus Day: 7 facts you didn't know about this Middle Eastern delight

Hindustan Times13-05-2025

Hummus, the velvety blend of chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice—and seriously, no garlic—has transcended its Middle Eastern roots to become a global culinary sensation.
Celebrated for its rich flavour and nutritional benefits, this versatile dip, spread, or straight-from-the-bowl delight has found its way into kitchens and onto plates worldwide.
Whether paired with warm pita, fresh veggies, or used as a dressing, hummus continues to win hearts and taste buds across cultures.
What's in the name?
Hummus boasts a storied past, with the earliest known recipes dating back to 13th-century Egypt. Its enduring presence underscores its timeless appeal. Hummuṣ (meaning chickpea) is an abbreviation of the dish's full name, hummus bi tahinah (chickpeas with tahini). Also known as houmos, humus, hommus, or hommos, the word 'hummus' first appeared in English-language dictionaries between 1950 and 1955, derived from the Turkish humus.
Nutritional powerhouse
Rich in fiber, plant-based protein, and essential nutrients like iron and folate, hummus supports heart health and aids in weight management.
Record-breaking delight
The 'hummus wars' are a real thing. In 2010, Lebanon and Israel competed in a culinary showdown to create the largest hummus dish. Lebanon claimed victory with a 22,000-pound serving—more than double Israel's 9,000-pound version. It took over 300 cooks to craft the mammoth dish, which earned a Guinness World Record. A true showcase of national pride and culinary prowess!
Global variations
While traditional hummus is made from chickpeas, global variations abound. In Egypt, for example, it's common to top hummus with ful medames—a seasoned fava bean dish typically flavoured with ground cumin and finished with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
Naturally allergen-friendly
Hummus is naturally free from gluten, nuts, and dairy, making it a safe and delicious option for those with common food allergies.
Chickpeas for mental health
Hummus can contribute to improved mental health thanks to its nutritional composition. Chickpeas and tahini are rich in nutrients that support brain function and mood regulation. Chickpeas contain tryptophan, an amino acid that aids in the production of serotonin—a neurotransmitter linked to mood and relaxation. The dip also offers B vitamins, magnesium, and other nutrients that support cognitive function and may help reduce anxiety and depression.
Aphrodisiac dip
As Samantha Jones portrayed by actor Kim Cattrall famously claimed in Sex and the City 2, hummus may have oestrogenic effects—and science agrees to an extent. Chickpeas are high in vitamin B6, known for its libido-boosting qualities. Combined with iron, magnesium, and potassium, the nutrients in hummus make it a surprisingly potent aphrodisiac.
How to make a classic hummus
Recipe courtesy of Katie Lee Biegel
INGREDIENTS:
Two 15-ounce cans chickpeas, drained, liquid reserved
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 cup tahini
1 teaspoon ground cumin
2 cloves garlic
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Smoked paprika, for serving, (optional)
Vegetable crudite and pita chips, for serving
DIRECTIONS:
Put the chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, cumin and garlic into a food processor and pulse until smooth. With the motor running, slowly pour in the oil in a steady stream. Add the salt and puree until very smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add some of the reserved chickpea liquid, 2 tablespoons at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
To serve, transfer the hummus to a serving bowl and drizzle some olive oil over the top. Garnish with a sprinkling of smoked paprika if using, and serve with vegetables and pita chips for dipping.
Store leftover hummus in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

The actress had accompanied Amitabh Bachchan , Mithun Chakraboraty and other cast members for the premiere. Shockingly, the entire cast and crew came for the event in a bus and it reminded fans of the simpler times. Iss film mein ek scene hai jahan Krishnan Iyer (played by Mithun Chakraborty ) ek chote bachche ko lekar aate hai ki ye humara family ka bachcha hai aur …mera dil aap sab se kehne ko chaah raha hai ke aaj se main Mithun ko apne family ka baccha maanti hu." The RCB success story: All method and a dose of luck

Ahmedabad: T20 cricket and endurance may sound paradoxical, but no IPL title is won without being ready for a long haul. More so when you throw in numerous complexities, from player availability, form and fitness with many of them punishing their bodies with all-format workloads. Add the unexpected momentum-breaker due to the week-long suspension this year, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) should be truly proud of their winning campaign. If 2024 was their turnaround season where they conjured up magic with a string of late wins to make the playoffs, this year was one of absolute dominance. Salt-Kohli partnership The signs were there in the very first game against Kolkata Knight Riders when Phil Salt's aggression (SR 180) allowed Virat Kohli (SR 163) to ease into his innings. Show intent but play strokes where he could hold his shape. It's a template the two openers maintained for the rest of the tournament, except for a brief spell when Salt was unwell and young English batter Jacob Bethell replaced him. The secret to Kohli's T20 longevity has revolved around the maverick players who have batted around him. It was Chris Gayle and AB de Villers in the past. To his credit, Salt's 403 runs (SR 176) to Kohli's 657 runs (SR 145) was just the ideal mix RCB sought from their openers. Josh Hazlewood At ₹12.5 crore, Josh Hazlewood was their most expensive auction pick. The Australia pacer set an early marker that the onus was on him to make the high impact performances. Not just in the big final where he troubled Punjab Kings openers in the Powerplay, throughout the tournament Hazlewood would bang it short of good length, extracting seam movement to become the middle overs enforcer. On days when the pitch was flat, he would be the first to spread the word in the bowling group that it was a day to use more mix-ups. Towards the end of the league phase when Hazlewood wasn't available, twice in a row RCB were taken for 200-plus totals – Ishan Kishan (94 - 48b) did the damage for SRH and Rishabh Pant (118 - 61b) for LSG. It showed how central the tall Aussie was to their bowling efforts in the season. Jitesh Sharma But what defined RCB's spirited season was how they always found someone to stand up to reverse the tide. In reply to Pant's explosive innings, Jitesh Sharma (85 - 33b) played the innings of his life. The wicket-keeper bat would play immense shots under pressure, unlocking a gear even he didn't know he possessed. His filling the big boots of Dinesh Karthik the finisher with a little help from Karthik the coach was one of the storylines of RCB's campaign. Rajat Patidar The RCB captain would have liked to be more consistent, but in many matches, he was the spin-hitter with his usual sparkle. Take the early match against KKR's quality spin attack and how his cameo eased the pressure in the middle overs. Most importantly, Patidar the batter at no stage was weighed down by the high-profile job of leading RCB. 'You can't underestimate the calmness he showed in leading some really big players, a really big franchise, making good decisions out there in the middle under the pressure that RCB players play under,' head coach Andy Flower said. 'Injury replacement to IPL-winning captain, bloody hell, that's a turnaround,' as Kohli said in a RCB video. Krunal Pandya Few would have predicted that Krunal Pandya, the left-arm spinner with a penchant for the surprise bouncer and round-arm deliveries, would become RCB's second highest wicket-taker – 17 to Hazlewood's 22. Be it the four-for against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede or the miserly 2/17 in the final at Ahmedabad, Krunal this year was willing to give the ball air every time conditions allowed. Although it wasn't his best season with the bat, when everyone else failed against DC, he held his own with 73*. Experience is not bought in the supermarket, goes the saying, but if you think of the auction as a marketplace, RCB did the smart bidding. Destiny Sporting conquests are incomplete without a bit of luck. If not for the forced break due to the India-Pakistan conflict, Hazlewood wouldn't have got the time to recover from a niggle. Also Patidar, who had a hand injury. Jitesh led in Patidar's absence. How can any RCB fan not believe in providence? Not after 17 failed attempts. The RCB story was a lot of method, and a dose of luck too.

This govt. school in Ramanathapuram has one student and a lone teach

A panchayat union primary school at Kattiyanenthal near Kodanur panchayat in Ramanathapuram district runs with just one teacher and a class V student due to poor enrolment in the current academic year. The school had two students in the previous academic year (2024 – 25), and four students in the year before. One of the two students from last year moved to another school in a nearby village, said sources. The school which was started about 30 years ago once had more than 50 students, said the villagers. The major reason for the gradual downfall of admissions has been attributed to the rise of high schools, higher secondary schools, and private CBSE schools in nearby villages. While the medium of instruction in the panchayat union school in the village was Tamil, parents who prefer English as medium of instruction and communication enrol their children in other schools, villagers added. Sources said that only a Headmaster was running the school last year due to a vacant teacher's post. After his transfer to a different school, a teacher from Mangalakudi was deputed to teach at the school, said sources. To fulfil the only student's food needs, morning breakfast has been arranged from a school in Pillayar Enthal village and lunch from a school in Kunjangulam, the authorities informed. However, school authorities say that the village has only a few houses and, in those households too, children in the age group between five and ten were very few. Senior district education department officials visited the school and the village to learn about the prevailing situation there. 'To overcome the issue of poor students' strength, we have held talks with the villagers and the School Management Committee (SMC) to increase the enrolment,' the official added. The officials were confident that the SMC members would convince the villagers to admit their children at the village school. 'If the villagers seek English medium of instruction, we can even represent their needs to the government and a suitable action can be taken,' the official assured. The officials negated the chances of the school being shut due to poor enrolment but said there were chances for the school to be merged with any of the nearby schools.
