Ringgit steady vs US dollar ahead of Federal Open Market Committee meeting

Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit was little changed against the US dollar on Wednesday morning as traders adopted a wait-and-see approach ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which will be unfolding tonight, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note was slightly higher at 4.2300/2400 against the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.2320/2365. It was reported that FOMC is expected to leave rates unchanged and the focus will be on whether Fed chair Jerome Powell offers any hint of a September rate cut. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama that the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose to 98.886 points as markets brace themselves for the FOMC decision. He noted that US data points continued to paint a mixed picture, with the Jobs Opening and Labour Turnover Survey (JOLTS) reporting that the number of job openings in June fell to 7.44 million from 7.51 million in the prior month, lower than consensus estimates of 7.71 million. Meanwhile, the US Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index improved to 97.2 points in July from 95.2 points previously. Concerns over higher prices due to imports, nevertheless, remained foremost among American consumers, he said. 'What this means to the foreign exchange market is that there could be support for the DXY as the Fed is unlikely to cut the interest rates in the immediate term,' he said. On a more positive note, Mohd Afzanizam said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its 2025 global gross domestic product (GDP) forecast to 3.0 per cent from 2.8 per cent. 72 Sabah dilapidated school upgrades completed

One project worth RM12.6 million is in the design stage and another worth RM54 million is at the procurement stage, bringing the total to nearly RM1 billion. During a visit to SMK Pinggan-Pinggan in Pitas, Ahmad said all works are via open tender to ensure timely or early completion. The RM27 million SMK Pinggan-Pinggan project, 78pc complete, includes two hostel blocks, warden houses, a dining hall for 400 students, and support facilities. The new hostel, to be completed in December 2025, will replace one located 1.3km away, which forces students to walk along busy roads without pedestrian paths. Ahmad said it will improve safety, reduce absenteeism, and provide better living conditions. 'It's our best': Sarawak brings signature products to penetrate the Singapore market at Malaysia Fest 2025
SINGAPORE (Bernama): Mi kolok, layer cakes, chocolates, white pepper, and black pepper were among the signature products from the Land of the Hornbills available at the Sarawak Pavilion at the Malaysia Fest 2025 expo currently taking place in Singapore until Sunday (Aug 3). Sarawak Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Director Norsalawaty Abdul Kadir said these products have their own uniqueness, making them suitable not only for selling directly to visitors but also have export potential. "For example, the Borco branded chocolate from D Mummy's Recipe sold here are made of Bornean cocoa and comes in dabai (Borneo olive), empelajo, and sour brinjal flavours. These are fruit and vegetables grown in Sarawak. "Other markets might have chocolates that contain hazelnut or almond, but Sarawak has empelajo which has a richer taste than almond,' she told Bernama. Norsalawaty said five entrepreneurs from the state have been selected to participate in the Sarawak Pavilion at the expo. She said this first-ever participation by the Sarawak state government through the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED) has been well-received, and hoped that more aspiring entrepreneurs would take part in the expo next year. "We have also matched Sarawakian entrepreneurs and business people with exporters in Singapore. "All the entrepreneurs that we brought here are export ready, including in terms of production capacity, in addition to having the required certification such as halal certification,' she said. Norsalawaty said for the first time at this Malaysia Fest, FAMA had brought in 400 kilograms of citron from Sarawak to allow visitors to sample and enjoy the agricultural produce as part of the "Island of Tropical Fruits' segment. "For the time being, citron is not yet widely grown in Sarawak. If there is demand here, we hope it can motivate our farmers,' she said. FAMA had brought in about 10 tonnes of tropical and seasonal fruit to the expo this time. Jutaan Purnama Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Saiful Hammidi Hamid, said the company's products such as Purnama Taste branded mi kolok, mi kampua and mi pok are looking for opportunities to be exported to Singapore and the wider market. He believed Sarawakian products have their own market as well as able to penetrate the wider international market. "Our products are now marketed not just in Malaysia but also in Paris this year following our participation at the expo there. They have been very well received. We started small through cargo export and recently we started using containers,' he said. Malaysia Fest 2025 themed "Unlock The Treasures of Malaysia' is taking place from July 31 to August 3 at Hall 5A and 5B, Singapore Expo from 10 am to 10 pm. Organised by MegaXpress International with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security through FAMA, the programme offers 321 booths and is participated in by 220 Malaysian entrepreneurial companies. - Bernama

SAMB implements new water tariff rates effective Aug 1
SYARIKAT Air Melaka Berhad (SAMB) has introduced new water tariff rates, effective Aug 1, aimed at keeping the state's water supply system sustainable, stable, and ready to meet future challenges. In a statement, SAMB said the adjustment was made without burdening the majority of domestic users, particularly the 312,396 registered households that use water prudently. 'This adjustment also involves 48,788 non-domestic accounts involving business premises, industries, government agencies, charitable institutions, places of worship, shipping and data centres, which will contribute more equitably to the cost of providing water services,' it said. The revised water supply tariff rates for Melaka are as follows: 1. Domestic (Residential): Minimum charge: RM9.40 0-20 cubic metre(m³): RM0.94/m³ 21-35 m³: RM1.69/m³ More than 35 m³: RM2.26/m³ 2. Domestic (Residential Bulk Meter): Minimum charge: RM25 Consumption: RM2.22/m³ 3. Business/Industry/Government: Minimum charge: RM26.60 0-35 m³: RM2.66/m³ More than 35 m³: RM2.72/m³ 4. Places of worship/Charitable institutions: Minimum charge: RM10.10 Consumption: RM1.01/m³ 5. Shipping: Minimum charge: RM80.20/m³ Consumption: RM8.02/m³ 6. Data Centre: Minimum charge: RM53.20 Consumption: RM5.32/m³ SAMB said the adjustment would also cover the long-term investment costs needed to make Melaka's water supply system more sustainable and capable of providing better services to all segments of the community. 'The adjustment will also enable SAMB to expedite the implementation of key strategic projects, including the 5 million litres per day (MLD) capacity Jus Water Treatment Plant Phase 2; Jernih Water Treatment Plant (90 MLD); expansion of the Merlimau Water Treatment Plant Phase 2; construction of the Bukit Batu water tank; and the upgrading of the Sebukor Water Treatment Plant,' it said. It added that the adjustment will also support the replacement and installation of new pipelines in Sungai Rambai, Ayer Molek, Bukit Baru, Masjid Tanah, and the 30‑kilometre stretch from Bukit Bahudin to Pekan Jasin; upgrading of sludge waste management systems at the Bertam and Merlimau water treatment plants; and connection of water pipelines from Sungai Muar to the Durian Tunggal Dam. — BERNAMA
