Dominican Republic roof collapse death toll climbs to at least 124
More than 300 people were inside Jet Set in the capital city of Santo Domingo when the roof collapsed just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. Many remained unaccounted for as the search and rescue operation continued.

Merengue singer Rubby Perez, who was performing when tragedy struck, was among the dead, according to emergency operations director Juan Manuel Mendez. Perez's body was found early Wednesday, Mendez said.
Officials said 145 people had been rescued alive from the rubble. So far, 54 of the confirmed 124 deceased victims have been identified. For many waiting desperately for news of their loved ones, that was not enough.
'We cannot wait until nighttime!' one woman shouted Wednesday as more victims were publicly identified. 'We're going to go crazy!'
Jet Set was known for merengue concerts on Mondays, and the club was packed with politicians, athletes and musicians when the roof collapsed. Also among the dead were former Yankees and Mets pitcher Octavio Dotel and Dominican star Tony Blanco, who played briefly for the Washington Nationals.
Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province and sister of ex-MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, was also killed in the collapse. Nelsy Cruz was the one who called President Luis Abinader from the rubble to let him know about the disaster.
Other victims included saxophone player Luis Solis, who was also performing, and New York-based fashion designer Martin Polanco. Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez said late Tuesday some of his relatives were in attendance and still missing.
'Our hearts are with you, and we all are affected,' Martinez said in an Instagram video. 'I still have family members that are still in the [rubble], and we don't know what happened to them, but we just want to be strong like we have always been.'
Investigators are still unsure what caused the roof to collapse. Videos shared online showed dust falling from the ceiling just minutes before the entire structure came falling down. Club owners said they were cooperating with the official investigation. However, the immediate priority on Wednesday remained search and rescue.

And yet, the Guardians have won nine of their last 11, even after a loss Sunday to the Chicago White Sox. They are a half-game behind the New York Yankees for the final wild card in the American League. After losing to Detroit on July 6 — just over a month ago — the Guardians had dropped 10 in a row and trailed the AL Central-leading Tigers by 15 1/2 games. That lead is now six. If Cleveland actually catches Detroit and wins the division, it would be the biggest comeback in the divisional play era. Here are the largest comebacks to date, according to Sportradar. 1978 New York Yankees (14 games): New York won the AL East thanks to Bucky Dent's homer in a one-game playoff at Fenway Park, and although this was a painful episode in Red Sox history, the Yankees won this more than Boston lost it. New York went 30-9 to finish the regular season. After stumbling in early September, the Red Sox later won eight in a row to force the playoff. 1995 Seattle Mariners (13 games): After a win on Aug. 2, the California Angels led Seattle by 13 in the AL West and Texas by 11. Then the Angels went 22-34 the rest of the way while the Mariners were 36-20. When the teams met in a one-game playoff, it was a 9-1 blowout in Seattle's favor, and although wild cards were in the playoffs for the first time, California couldn't even salvage one of those. 2012 Oakland Athletics (13 games): Fresh off two straight pennants, the Texas Rangers led the Angels by 6 1/2 and the A's by 13 at the end of June. But Oakland went 33-13 down the stretch, forcing the Rangers to settle for a wild card. 1973 New York Mets (12 1/2 games): Tug McGraw's famous phrase — 'Ya gotta believe!' — was a rallying cry of this comeback. New York was 12 1/2 back in early July and still in last place in late August, but the Mets took a weak NL East with an 82-79 record and then beat Cincinnati to win the pennant. 2006 Minnesota Twins (12 1/2 games): Detroit was 35-14 and led the Twins by over a dozen games, but there was enough time left for Minnesota to edge the Tigers in the AL Central when Detroit dropped five in a row to end the regular season. Although there are similarities between 2006 and this year, the good news for the Tigers is that they did make the World Series that season as a wild card. Comeback of the week The New York Mets led Milwaukee 5-0 in the fourth inning Sunday, but nobody who has watched those two teams recently should have been shocked when the Brewers chipped away and eventually won 7-6 on a solo homer by Isaac Collins in the bottom of the ninth. Milwaukee, which had a win probability of 7.1% in the fourth according to Baseball Savant, has won nine in a row to take a five-game lead over the Phillies and Blue Jays for baseball's best record. The Mets, on the other hand, have dropped seven straight and lead Cincinnati by only 1 1/2 games for the National League's final wild card. Nation's largest landlord, Greystar, settles price-fixing suit with feds
Federal attorneys did not estimate the impact on renters, but noted one apartment complex boasted of raising rents 25% in a single year. Apartment-dwellers may get some rental relief after federal officials reached a price-fixing settlement with the nation's largest private landlord: Greystar. The agreement between the government and South Carolina-based Greystar, which manages about 950,000 units nationally, blocks the company from using computer software blamed for ratcheting up rents. Greystar on Aug. 8 said it had also reached a similar settlement in a class-action lawsuit brought by renters. Federal attorneys had accused Greystar of using computer algorithms to bump up rents by illegally colluding with other landlords via software known as "RealPage." The software system allowed landlords to privately share their proprietary pricing data with each other so they could raise prices collectively. Federal attorneys said the collusion maximized profits for landlords while stifling competition. The lawsuit said RealPage users were also collectively encouraged never to lower rents, even if the market had softened. "American greatness has always depended on free-market competition, and nowhere is competition more important than in making housing affordable again," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. In the settlement with Greystar, which still needs approval from a federal judge, Justice Department attorneys said the use of RealPage by Greystar was modern-day price fixing. They did not estimate the impact on renters, but in one legal filing noted an apartment complex boasted of using RealPage systems to raise rents 25% in a single year, while also getting their competitors to raise theirs. "Whether in a smoke-filled room or through an algorithm, competitors cannot share competitively sensitive information or align prices to the detriment of American consumers," Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater said in a statement. Greystar admitted no wrongdoing in settling the case, but agreed to help federal prosecutors in their separate ongoing investigation into RealPage. Greystar also agreed to external monitoring. "We entered into these settlements to make clear the government's interpretation of the law and to ensure we continue to do things the right way," Greystar officials said in a statement. In a separate lawsuit that remains pending, the FTC and the state of Colorado have accused Greystar of tricking customers into signing misleading leases with higher rents than advertised, stacking in undisclosed fees, or charging people a nonrefundable application fee before revealing the true monthly rental price. Federal officials have hinted they may soon settle that case, and Greystar has already rolled out a new website and rent-pricing calculator for prospective tenants.

It was the culmination of a career in politics that has spanned roles from the White House to the Governor's Mansion in Raleigh. State of play: Now, the veteran of North Carolina politics is taking that experience to help lead the Raleigh office of NP Strategy, a government relations and strategic communications firm. I grew up in Greenville and went to UNC-Chapel Hill, so that originally brought me to the Triangle. Then I moved to D.C. to work in politics from 2008 until 2015. But when my wife, Jessica, and I thought about where we wanted to be, Raleigh and the Triangle always stood out. On my way down here, I worked on then-Attorney General Roy Cooper's announcement to run for governor, and about a year later I joined his administration. 🍽️ Favorite place to eat in the Triangle? There is no question that it is Stanbury. 📚 Last great book you read? " The Devil at His Elbow," a chronicling of the Murdaugh family murders by the Raleigh-based journalist Valerie Bauerlein. ⚾️ What do you think the Triangle is missing? A Major League Baseball franchise. I think one more franchise to add to the Carolina Hurricanes and the NC Courage, which is a top-tier franchise that we go to a lot, would really put the Triangle in another tier of conversation. I think an MLB team would help bring us more headquarters operations to the Triangle, which is something that's always been sort of a knock on the region. We don't have a ton of headquarters. 🐟 Favorite long weekend spot? A family place along the Pamlico River in Beaufort County.
