Asean a key bridge at BRICS meet

The Star29-04-2025
PETALING JAYA: Highlighting the role of Asean as a constructive bridge during the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meeting in Brazil is crucial in light of recent global happenings, say geopolitical experts.
Institute of Strategic Analysis and Policy Research (Insap) chairman Datuk Dr Pamela Yong characterised Malaysia's participation in the meeting as particularly timely and a strategic move, given the recent developments on the global stage.
'With the global trade system facing unprecedented disruption, particularly due to recent unilateral actions by major economies like the United States, there is an urgent need for Asean to act as a collective voice for developing nations,' she said when contacted yesterday.
She added that the meeting would not merely provide a platform for engagement to strengthen its stance on multilateralism, but also ensure that Asean's priorities are highlighted.
'It is also about ensuring that Asean priorities, from trade resilience to sustainable growth, are represented in shaping a more inclusive and predictable global framework.
'Rather than being caught between competing powers, Malaysia's leadership aims to position Asean as a constructive bridge and an advocate for the Global South,' she said.
Yong's views come in the wake of the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meeting in Rio de Janeiro held yesterday and today, attended by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic).
The BRICS foreign ministers meeting is one of the important precursors to the BRICS Leaders' Summit, scheduled to take place on July 6 and 7 under Brazil's chairmanship.
The meeting also marks the first gathering of foreign ministers from BRICS members and partner countries for this year.
It will concentrate on six priority areas: global health, trade, investment and finance, climate change, artificial intelligence, and the reform of the peace and security multilateral system, alongside the institutional development of BRICS.
Malaysia officially attained BRICS partner country status on Jan 1.
In a statement, Mohamad expressed that Malaysia will actively promote engagement between Asean and BRICS with the aim of enhancing regional and economic cooperation.
'As Asean Chair for 2025, Malaysia will actively advocate for deeper engagement between Asean and BRICS aimed at fostering regional cooperation and enhancing economic collaboration,' he said.
He added that the meeting would look into ways to reinforce collective efforts towards a fairer, more sustainable global economy, which resonates strongly with Malaysia's national interests and commitment to inclusive sustainable development.
'In particular, the emphasis on trade and investment is apt and timely, given the growing uncertainties in the global economic landscape in the wake of the United States' unilateral tariffs,' added Mohamad.
He is also scheduled to deliver Malaysia's national intervention during a dedicated session focused on 'The Role of the Global South in Reinforcing Multilateralism', which reflects Malaysia's steadfast commitment to strengthening multilateralism and amplifying the voices of developing countries.
Meanwhile, Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said the multilateralism approach taken by Malaysia would resonate well during the meeting.
'We do not want to bring Asean closer to any particular global power, such as China or the United States, but we want to raise our stand on multilateralism. It will show that we should be talking to all countries,' he said.
He added that highlighting the role of the Global South was also crucial during the meeting.
'While only four Asean nations are part of BRICS, all 10 Asean members are part of the Global South,' he said.

MIRI (July 3): Malaysia continues to make strides in exploring international markets as eight local companies participated in Fine Food New Zealand 2025, the largest biennial food trade exhibition in the Oceania region, held in Auckland from June 29 to July 1. Among the participants was IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd, the sole representative from Sarawak, which showcased gluten-free cookies made from sago flour ― a product jointly formulated with CRAUN Research Sdn Bhd. Sharing his experience, IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd managing director Mohd Hafidz Rohani said Malaysia's involvement in the event opened up new opportunities for collaboration with local importers and distributors, particularly in the health-based and food innovation segments. Hafidz, who also serves as chairman of the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri, said the Malaysian exhibitors represented a wide spectrum of the food industry, including durian and pineapple products, ready-to-eat sambal, canned beverages, health items, fisheries products, and gluten-free foods. All participants were part of the Malaysian delegation under Pavilion Malaysia, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) in collaboration with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA). Oceania, with a population exceeding 50 million people and a growing ASEAN community, presents strong potential for Malaysian companies to establish a foothold in the regional market. This sentiment was echoed by Malaysia's High Commissioner to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki, during the opening of Pavilion Malaysia at the exhibition. The Malaysia–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (MNZFTA), in force since 2010, has further facilitated the entry of Malaysian products into the New Zealand market. Hafidz said that the participation reflected the continued commitment of government agencies and industry players to expand the global reach of Malaysian products through high-impact trade platforms. The launch event was also attended by FAMA director-general Abdul Rashid Bahri and Perak State Executive Councillor for Women's Development, Family, Community Welfare, Entrepreneurs, and Cooperatives, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed. craun research Fine Food New Zealand 2025 gluten-free sago cookies

Ringgit rises on improved sentiment after US-Vietnam trade deal

KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 — The ringgit closed higher against the US dollar today, supported by improved regional sentiment following a new United States–Vietnam trade deal, said SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes. At 6pm, the local note rose to 4.2195/2255 versus the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2245/2305. Innes said the agreement to impose a reduced 20 per cent tariff on Vietnamese exports, down from a previously threatened 46 per cent has lifted risk appetite and supported regional currencies. 'The markets see this as a positive sign for global trade recovery, which helped boost the ringgit,' he told Bernama. Innes also said that the weaker-than-expected US ADP jobs data, with only 33,000 jobs added in June, reinforced expectations of two US rate cuts this year, pressuring the greenback. He noted, however, that market focus might shift on tonight's non-farm payrolls report, with consensus at 106,000. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It shrunk against the euro to 4.9756/9827 from 4.9748/9818, and depreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9333/9376 from 2.9316/9360. However, it appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7621/7703 from 5.7859/7941 yesterday. The local note traded mixed against its Asean counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3146/3196 from 3.3167/3217, and rose against the Thai baht to 13.0211/0457 from 13.0233/0482. It slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.5/261.0 from 259.9/260.5, and weakened against the Philippine peso to 7.50/7.51 from 7.49/7.51 previously. — Bernama
