Downton Abbey star shares 'distinctive' change in third movie as filming 'rule' broken

The Downton Abbey franchise will come to a close with the Grand Finale later this year, which marks the final film in the franchise
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is set to arrive in cinemas in the coming weeks, and Elizabeth McGovern has disclosed what viewers can anticipate from the movie.

It represents the third and concluding film in the Downton Abbey series, which will witness numerous beloved stars from the programme return to their characters for one final time.

Elizabeth, 64, has disclosed that circumstances were altered on set during this production, with one particular regulation being abandoned.

She explained how the new movie features some spontaneous acting, which had been strictly prohibited previously.
"Most of the time, there was an absolute rule that not one syllable could ever be changed," she told Deadline. "Which, in a way, gives it its distinctive flavour."

The forthcoming picture also represents the first Downton Abbey film without Maggie Smith, who portrayed Violet Crawley. The actress tragically died in September 2024, reports the Express.
Maggie's loss was profoundly experienced amongst the ensemble, yet Elizabeth disclosed that the movie still succeeds in capturing the enchantment of Downton Abbey, where Maggie's spirit continues to linger.
"She permeates everything, definitely," Elizabeth said.

The performer, who portrays Cora in the beloved series, contemplated collaborating with the identical crew for more than ten years, with the inaugural episode of Downton Abbey having broadcast in 2010.
She said: "You can't help but feel a real attachment," before confirming it is "definitely" the end of Downton Abbey.

Despite her confidence, she did mention: "Unless they do something like go back in time and it's a different cast. You know, the young Maggie. There's been quite a lot of that sort of talk."
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will see Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter and Joanne Frogatt reprising their roles.
New additions to the cast include Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan.

Dancing With The Stars shock as fan favourite is eliminated in emotional semi-final - and the celebrities headed for the Grand Finale are revealed

Dancing With The Stars delivered a bombshell elimination on Monday night as fan favourite Mia Fevola was sensationally sent packing during the second semi-final. Despite a near-flawless foxtrot with partner Gustavo Viglio, the glamorous model and influencer fell short of a spot in the Grand Finale after the judges' scores were combined with the studio audience vote. The result stunned viewers, with Mia delivering a heartfelt farewell as she reflected on her journey: 'My confidence has grown so much, and I'm proud of how far I've come as a dancer. 'It's been the best experience of my life, honestly. The production, the cast, and my partner. It unlocked a part of me... it's been amazing.' Her emotional exit means Felicity Ward, Kyle Shilling, and Shaun Micallef will now join Michael Usher, Brittany Hockley, and Trent Cotchin in Monday night's star-studded Grand Finale. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Home and Away star Kyle Shilling kicked off the show with a high-energy, country-themed quickstep alongside Lily Cornish. After earning a perfect score last week, Kyle had big shoes to fill, but a few stumbles left him frustrated. Still, the judges awarded him 29 points and encouraged him not to be so hard on himself. Next up, comedian Felicity Ward wowed the crowd with a fiery salsa with partner Aric Yegudkin. Bursting with energy, Felicity lit up the dance floor and scored an impressive 33 points, topping the leaderboard for the night. Then came Fevola, who delivered a technically brilliant foxtrot. The judges praised her precision, though Craig Revel Horwood urged her to dig deeper emotionally. Her score of 31 wasn't enough to carry her through. Finally, Shaun Micallef closed out the show with a cha-cha full of quirks, charm, and horse-inspired dance moves. His signature humour had the ballroom in stitches, earning him 30 points and a spot in the finale. Felicity Ward, Kyle Shilling, and Shaun Micallef will now join Michael Usher, Brittany Hockley, and Trent Cotchin in Monday night's star-studded Grand Finale. All pictured Before the nail-biting results were revealed, viewers were treated to a spectacular group number from the Brent Street dancers. On Sunday night, the show said goodbye to Olympic boxer Harry Garside, who was eliminated just short of making it to the finals. Harry opened the show with a steamy Mad Max-inspired Tango. While the judges agreed the style wasn't his strongest, they praised his effort and commitment to the performance before scoring him 20 points. With the audience vote combined with the judges' scores, it was Harry and his partner Siobhan Power who were sent home, just short of making the top five. Reflecting on his journey, Harry said: 'It's been so much fun. It's such an amazing process. 'To share this with Siobhan, and to learn how to dance from her, like how cool is that? So fingers crossed it helps my boxing, I'm sure it will.'

BBC Antiques Roadshow guest refuses to sell Titanic letter worth incredible fortune

Antiques Roadshow expert Hilary Kay met a guest whose father worked on the Titanic and survived the sinking of the vessel Antiques Roadshow's Hilary Kay had an eye-opening encounter with guests whose father, Sidney Daniels, was employed as a plate washer on the Titanic at the age of just 18. Sidney was one of the survivors of the tragic sinking and his offspring brought along a letter he penned to the beloved BBC programme. ‌ Recalling the fateful night, his daughter stated: "It was a Sunday, he was sound asleep, there was a banging and shouting and it was the night watchman. They were all a bit bleary-eyed because at first they thought it was a drill. ‌ "It wasn't until he got up on deck, there were hardly any people around at first and then officers came and turned to him and said, 'Go to these cabins'." ‌ She then explained how Sidney had been tasked with waking sleeping guests on the ship, as she went on: "Of course it was hard to wake people, they were asleep. Some reacted in different ways. One or two said 'What does this young man know? He's 18, the boat is unsinkable, we're not going up on deck'. "Others were saying, 'We've got children, they're going to get a chill if they go up on deck'. So he helped the children with the lifejackets and ushered them up on deck." ‌ Hilary chimed in on the episode which was re-aired on Sunday night: "You can imagine the scene of chaos and despair because people realised there weren't enough lifeboats." Sidney's son replied: "That was his job, to try and get people into the lifeboats and the water was rising all of the time. When all the lifeboats had gone, the water was up around his knees and he thought, 'It's time to go'. ‌ "So he dived off the side of the boat, swam away from it, came to a lifebelt and to my Dad's mind, it was too close to the boat, he was afraid when the boat went down, the suction would take them down so he said to this chap, 'It's no good here, let's swim away'. "Apparently this chap followed him and they just kept swimming. He said he saw a star in the sky which he thought was his mother and swam towards this star and eventually came to this life raft which was upside down and managed to cling onto that." ‌ "When he was on there, he said, 'I'm tired, I want to go to sleep,' and the chap next to him said, 'Don't go to sleep lad, if you do, it will be your last'. "So they sat there singing hymns trying to pass the time away." The duo had brought along a letter which had remained tucked inside Sidney's uniform pocket when he leapt from the Titanic, the Express reports. ‌ Hillary, clearly stunned by the letter, began to speak about the artefact's significance and value: "It's an extraordinary item and anything related to Titanic has this extraordinary effect on people. It is an extraordinary moment to behold something which is so linked into an extraordinary moment in history." She estimated its worth, saying: "We're talking about around £10,000, is the realistic value."
