What happened on the Carnival Triumph ‘poop cruise'? Netflix Trainwreck documentary explained?

Scottish Sun7 hours ago

NEW Netflix documentary series Trainwreck explores some of the world's weirdest and most wonderful events, as well as its most disgusting.
Here we look at an episode of the show dedicated to an extreme example of the latter that took place on the Carnival Triumph — aptly titled Poop Cruise.

What happened on the Carnival Triumph?
In February 2013, the Carnival Triumph cruise ship became the center of an international media storm after a disastrous voyage that would later be dubbed the 'poop cruise'.
The ship, carrying more than 4,000 passengers and crew, set sail from Galveston, Texas, for what was supposed to be a relaxing four-day trip to the Caribbean.
But the journey took a dramatic turn for the worse on day three when a fire broke out in the aft engine room.
Although the crew quickly extinguished the blaze and no one was hurt, the fire knocked out the ship's main power supply.
This left it adrift in the Gulf of Mexico without propulsion and most of its essential systems.
With the loss of power, the Triumph's air conditioning, refrigeration and, most critically, its sewage and sanitation systems failed.
This unsurprisingly created nightmarish conditions for everyone on board the stricken luxury liner.
Toilets stopped working and raw sewage began seeping into hallways and cabins, producing an overwhelmingly unpleasant stench, as well as an unsafe and unsanitary environment.
Many passengers reported that they had to use plastic bags and red biohazard bags for waste — the restrooms were totally unusable.
The lack of air conditioning made the interior of the ship unbearably hot and humid, prompting many to sleep on open decks in an effort to escape the oppressive heat and foul smell.

Food supplies quickly dwindled as refrigeration units failed.
While the crew did everything within their power to provide meals with what little they had, passengers were soon eating cold sandwiches and makeshift meals, often consisting of little more than bread and vegetables.
Water was rationed, with the overall atmosphere on the ship growing tense as the days dragged on.
Communication with the outside world was limited, but news of the dire conditions spread quickly, with images of the ship and its suffering passengers quickly spreading around the world.
After five days stranded at sea, the Carnival Triumph was finally towed to port in Mobile, Alabama, ending the horrific ordeal.
The situation on board was difficult and we are very sorry for what has happened. We pride ourselves on providing our guests with a great vacation experience and clearly we failed in this case
Former Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill
But the fallout was just beginning, with investigations revealing that Carnival had been aware of certain maintenance issues and fire risks on the ship prior to the voyage.
This raised serious questions about the company's safety protocols and preparedness.
CNN obtained documents showing only four of the six generators working, and the company knew about the fire hazard posed by the generators when they set sail.
These documents revealed that the company was also aware of the fuel line leaks that contributed to the fire, CNN reported.
The documents also showed that there had been nine incidents with fuel lines in just two years.

Lawsuits followed and the cruise industry as a whole faced renewed scrutiny over its emergency procedures and passenger safety standards.
Former Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill said: "I want to again apologize to our guests and their friends and families.
'The situation on board was difficult and we are very sorry for what has happened.
"We pride ourselves on providing our guests with a great vacation experience and clearly we failed in this case."
Poop Cruise
Netflix's documentary series Trainwreck revisits this infamous event in an episode titled Poop Cruise
Offering first-hand accounts from passengers and crew who endured the ordeal, the doc recounts how the technical failures occurred and squalid conditions this created.
Exploring how quickly a dream vacation can transform into hell on earth, Poop Cruise also looks into the psychological impact of the experience on the people involved.
Episodes of Trainwreck started dropping on Netflix on June 10, 2025, with Poop Cruise available for streaming from June 24.

Inside world's ‘creepiest' island with 160,000 abandoned corpses where tourists are BANNED from stepping foot

Poveglia sits just off the coast of Venice and is comprised of three small areas, each as creepy as the last. And it is because of those unstable buildings that tourists are banned from setting foot on the spine-tingling patch of land. Rare exceptions are made for official reasons, such as research or filming. The reason for the island's spooky reputation is what is was used for in centuries past. In the 18th century, Poveglia was used as a quarantine station during outbreaks of the plague. People were dragged kicking and screaming to the island if they showed even the slightest symptoms of the Black Death, according to local tales. The 18-acre plot was also used as a mass burial ground, where some 160,000 victims are thought to have been burned to stop the spread of the disease. It has been said that even to this day, human ash from these cremations make up more than 50 per cent of the island's soil. British urban explorers Matt Nadin, 40, and Andy Thompson, 54, filmed themselves visiting areas of the island that have been left untouched for decades in 2020. Then duo posted the footage to their YouTube channel, Finders Beepers History Seekers, where they can often be found exploring abandoned and historic places of interest. English seaside town to transform abandoned beach shelters into new attraction Matt said: "It was really, really eerie. "You could tell even the taxi driver was scared, not just of the police but of the place itself, he couldn't get away quick enough. "The island is so full of dark, dark history, a hell of a lot of people died there and you really get a sense of the horrors that took place there while you're walking around. "They burnt all the bodies and left them where they lay. The island has never really been cleared properly or anything so everything has just been left. "Later on, when it was turned into an asylum, and because people were shoved there out of the way of prying eyes, they started to do experiments on them, horrible, horrible stuff. "Whilst we were there, we heard the bell toll and that was quite spooky, that did actually freak me out a little bit. It was like an omen or something. "The whole place was just really weird and eerie although you could tell from the tiles and the archways it would have been a beautiful building originally. "You could see that hardly anyone had set foot there for years because there is no graffiti or anything it's all just natural decay. "Nature has really taken over and it was really typical of a horror movie with all the vines and creepers. "Definitely an experience I won't forget in a hurry." 5 A Venetian geriatric hospital Credit: Getty

Emily in Paris star praises 'graceful' Lily Collins as she juggles motherhood

EXCLUSIVE: Lucien Laviscount has praised his Emily in Paris co-star Lily Collins for the way she's been 'doing everything' as she juggles motherhood with her leading-lady duties It's all action - and a bit of fizz - on the Emily in Paris set as Lucien Laviscount gives us the inside scoop on what it's really like filming the hit Netflix show with new mum Lily Collins. Now in its fourth season, the cast are currently shooting in Rome before heading back to Paris - but according to Lucien, the real star of the show is Lily, who's juggling motherhood with her leading-lady duties like a total pro. 'She's doing everything,' he tells us. 'She's got a newborn, she's doing it all — and she's doing it with such grace… I'm gonna use the word 'paza'. I've never used the word paza in my life, but she's got that.' ‌ Lily welcomed her first child, Tove Jane McDowell, on January 31, 2025, via surrogacy with her husband, Charlie McDowell, sharing the good news on Instagram at the time. ‌ Lucien, 32, who plays heartthrob Alfie in the series, says reuniting with the cast has been like no time has passed at all. 'It's so bizarre… life's been going on for everyone, but it only feels like a couple of weeks,' he says. 'We're getting the scripts through, it's like, 'Oh sh*t, this is crazy.' It's going off!' He also had us laughing talking about his Schweppes campaign — a cheeky nod to his Caribbean roots and growing up with ginger beer at his grandma's. 'Schweppes was like the fancy stuff we bring out at Christmas,' he shared, adding with a grin, 'It was like a perfect little match, to be honest.' Filming continues over the summer with plenty of drama ahead - both on screen and off - and Laviscount promises this season is one to watch. 'Everyone's really excited about what's to come,' he says. 'It's all there to play for, really.' Fizzing with energy, we say! After months away from filming Emily In Paris, Lily's return to set was always going to be a welcoming affair. But Netflix star brought the entire set to a standstill as she returned to work with her four month old daughter in tow. Cradling her in her arms, the 36 year old actress looked the picture of happiness as she was surrounded by her cast mates and crew as they cooed over her baby girl, named Tove. And it looked as though the four month old was also in her element as she playfully smiled and sat comfortable in the arms of various pals of the actress. ‌ The actress was seen dressed in a blue and white floral trouser suit for her role as Emily Cooper for the new series of the show, in photos shared by the Daily Mail. Waiting in the wings to step in for parent duties in case Lily was to be whisked off to shoot a scene, was her husband and father to her daughter, Charlie McDowell. Standing aside, Charlie placed a muslin cloth over his shoulder in case he needed to take over and comfort his daughter. ‌ The new series of the show is being filmed in Rome instead of Paris as Lily's character is now creating a new life for herself in the historical city with her on-screen boyfriend Marcello, played by Eugenio Franceschini. Back in January, Lily and Charlie welcomed their daughter via surrogate. Sharing her happy news with her 29 million followers, Lily posted: "Welcome to the center [sic] of our world Tove Jane McDowell. Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again…" Unfortunately, both Lily and Charlie were criticised by a few people on social media for using the aid of a surrogate to fulfil their dreams of becoming parents, as they claimed they had bought the privilege. ‌ While others likened surrogacy to "human trafficking." This forced Charlie to publicly address the comments and labelled the comments as "unkind." He wrote: "It's OK to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It's OK to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume." A month after the birth, Lily took to Instagram once again to share with fans how Valentines Day took on a new meaning for her now that she was a mother. On February 14, she wrote: "I truly can't imagine feeling more love. Valentine's Day (and every day) just got a whole lot sweeter.' Lucien Laviscount is Schweppes' brand ambassador - starring in two short films, featuring its new purple Tropical Soda, to inspire more of those special social moments with loved ones this summer.

He worked with assistant Mateo Caldas, who was also an estate manager, since 2018 - but Mateo has moved on. They said the past year has been "very transformative for him as he ended several close friendships and business relationships that no longer served him." However, Justin has long been open about his struggles. He's credited his Christian faith and his wife, Hailey Bieber, for helping him through dark times. The couple married in 2018 and have been under public scrutiny ever since. While they've often posted about their love, recent cryptic posts — including a plea for prayers from Hailey's father last year— have fuelled speculation about tension behind the scenes. 5 Messages shared by Justin reveal a tense conversation Credit: justinbieber/Instagram 5 They appear to show a friendship coming to an end Credit: justinbieber/Instagram
