Series Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs San Francisco Giants
The Tampa Bay Rays have had an up-and-down road west coast swing thus far as they've sandwiched a series sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners between a couple of series victories over the Los Angeles Angels and Athletics; now, the Rays will complete their journey out west with a three game series in San Francisco. By taking two of three over the Athletics, the Rays improved to 59-63 on the season and sit 5.5 games back of the Yankees in the Wild Card chase; the Rays will need to go 28-12 the rest of the way to reach 87 wins which is what it'll likely take to reach the postseason. The Giants meanwhile are in a similar spot. After teetering around .500 over the first three months of the season, the team struggled in July (notably after acquring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox). This has dropped them to 59-62, 5 games back of the New York Mets for the 3rd Wild Card spot. The Giants are not a bad team and have a roster filled with solid players. Matt Chapman has 3 fWAR, and is hitting .229/.337/.423 with 16 HR, registering a 118 wRC+ while being among the top defensive third baseman in baseball. Patrick Bailey leads all catchers with 15 DRS and 16 FRV; but he is among the worst hitters in the game (65 wRC+), despite this, he has 2.2 fWAR. Then there is Willy Adames. The former Rays shortstop is in the first year of a $182M contract that he signed this past offseason. After struggling early on, Adames has found his footing in San Francisco; if you ignore his first two weeks, he has been an above average offensive player. Overall, Adames is hitting .223/.309/.393 with 18 HR, registering a 99 wRC+ and accruing 2.3 fWAR over 120 games. Rafael Devers has been a solid offensive player for the Giants, but his defense is still a major detriment to his game. On the pitching side, Logan Webb should receive some Cy Young votes while Robbie Ray has bounced back following a couple of tough years. Randy Rodriguez is one of the top relievers in baseball. Yankees Urged To Cut Ties With Struggling $8.6M All-Star Before Postseason
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees have struggled lately, and a lot of the blame has been placed on manager Aaron Boone and reliever Devin Williams. Williams has lost games for the Yankees, but Boone continues to trust him. With the postseason quickly approaching, the Yankees have some big decisions to make. Adam Weinrib of Yanks Go Yard recently urged the Yankees to place Williams on waivers ahead of the postseason. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - APRIL 09: Devin Williams #38 of the New York Yankees delivers a pitch against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on April 09, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - APRIL 09: Devin Williams #38 of the New York Yankees delivers a pitch against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on April 09, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan."The Yankees, for very good reason, would rather not embolden Williams' confidence and send him somewhere he can eventually bite them," Weinrib wrote. "They're also hanging onto a playoff spot for dear life, and it's really hard to consider postseason roster implications right now. "But ... who would you rather want taking October reps? Yerry de los Santos, or Devin Williams? A head-to-head with Loáisiga is probably a faceoff that Williams wins, but de los Santos, the Yankees' expert long man? Not so sure. Crazy, but not so sure. The waiver wire could get very spicy around the start of next month." Cutting ties with Williams would be ludicrous for the Yankees. He's struggled this year. It's by far the worst season of his career. He shouldn't be the closer in New York. All of these are correct. But Williams would be the best eighth-inning man in any bullpen in baseball. There's a reason that if the Yankees were to place him on waivers, nearly every contending team would try to scoop him up. If the Yankees don't want to use him as the closer, that makes sense, but he needs to be a piece of the bullpen if the team wants to win the World Series. He could provide a lot of use in the sixth or seventh inning of postseason games. More MLB: Dodgers Blockbuster? MLB Insider Floats Shocking Waiver Candidate In LA

Cubs' Kyle Tucker Gets Contradictory Free Agency Projections From Two MLB Insiders
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Few players have ever had more incentive to excel in the final two months of a season than the Chicago Cubs' Kyle Tucker. A four-time All-Star and World Series champion with the Houston Astros, Tucker has accomplished just about everything you can on a baseball field before his 29th birthday. But he's had some ups and downs this year, and he could really use a strong finish. As the marquee free agent in this year's class, Tucker will set the market regardless of how he performs in September and October. But the final dollar value of his contract is of great interest not only to him and his agents, but fans of every team that thinks it has a shot at him. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 4: Kyle Tucker #30 of the Chicago Cubs looks on during the sixth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field on August 4, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 4: Kyle Tucker #30 of the Chicago Cubs looks on during the sixth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field on August 4, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by)So there's a simple question to tackle at this point: How much is Tucker really worth? Two baseball insiders had drastically different answers to that question on Friday. Robert Murray of FanSided projected that Tucker would make over $300 million this winter, perhaps eclipsing $400 million. "After a torrid start to his time in Chicago, Tucker has come back down to earth a bit. Still, he's been a difference-making slugger, and is hitting .267/.380/.461 with an .842 OPS, 18 home runs and 62 RBI," Murray reasoned. However, The Athletic's Jim Bowden was far more bullish, saying he expected Tucker to cross the half-billion dollar threshold, and potentially go much higher. "Most analysts believe he will get somewhere between $500 million and $650 million based on the recent contracts of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with the (Toronto) Blue Jays ($500 million) and Juan Soto with the (New York) Mets ($765 million)," wrote Bowden. We saw last year how Soto, coming off a brilliant season and postseason run with the New York Yankees, got paid above what almost anyone projected at this point in the process. Couldn't the same happen with Tucker, who is only two years older? And for every dollar Tucker makes, the question of which teams will remain in the picture grows more relevant. The Cubs, who have never given out even a $200 million contract, are going to have to get uncomfortable to some degree; it's just a question of how high their rivals will drive the bidding. This much we know: When the final contract is announced, either Murray or Bowden is going to be surprised. More MLB: Mets Predicted to Lose 5-Time All-Star Pete Alonso in Free Agency Surprise
