‘All of China looking at us': Hong Kong tenpin bowlers reunite to chase Games gold
Mak Cheuk-yin, who won the men's trios event at the 2017 World Championships in Las Vegas, is part of a Hong Kong team made up of nine former full national players and one current national youth player that will tackle the lanes at Top Bowl in Kai Tak Mall 2 from August 22 to 24.
Bowling is deemed a mass participation event for the National Games, and the event rules stipulate that no full-time athletes should take part in any such events.
Co-hosting the National Games with Guangdong and Macau, Hong Kong will be staging eight other sports, including fencing, track cycling, triathlon and rugby sevens, from November 9 to 21.
'We're just going to play with a normal mindset and not bear some must-win pressure any more,' said Mak, who last represented Hong Kong at the 2023 World Championships and has not been a full-time athlete for more than a year.

'There was so much pressure in the regional and international competitions I competed in before, such as the Asian Games,' said Mak, who won the trios world title in 2017 with Wu Siu-hong and Tseng Tak-hin.

National Games ticket sales to begin this month, using real-name registration
Tickets for China's National Games in November will be released in phases, with the first batch to be available from August 28, organisers said on Wednesday. An official ticketing platform has been launched and will use a real-name registration system to help prevent scalping, it was revealed at a joint press conference held in Guangzhou by representatives from Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau, the three hosting regions. The first phase of tickets will be for 17 events, officials said. They will include football, basketball and gymnastics disciplines. Four of the eight competition sports being staged in Hong Kong will form part of the first phase of sales, with tickets to attend the rugby sevens, beach volleyball, men's handball and men's under-22 basketball events up for grabs. Yeung Tak-keung, head of the National Games Coordination Office in Hong Kong, explained the ticket pricing strategy, which was finalised after consultation with the city's co-hosts. Italian orienteering athlete dies at World Games Mattia Debertolis was discovered unconscious during the men's middle-distance competition. Photo courtesy of the International Orienteering Federation Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertolis died after being found unresponsive during competition at the World Games in Chengdu, organisers said. The 29-year-old was discovered unconscious during an orienteering event on August 8 and died four days later, said a joint statement from World Games organisers and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). The World Games is a multi-sport event held every four years for disciplines not included in the Olympics. "Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away," the statement said. It did not provide details on the cause of death. Debertolis, from Primiero in eastern Italy, was taking part in the final of the men's middle-distance, the first medal event of the Games. Footage from the World Games' social media accounts showed athletes running through crop fields and villages on a largely rural course. The winner, Switzerland's Riccardo Rancan, completed the course in 45 minutes and 22 seconds. Debertolis was listed as "Did Not Finish" in official results, along with 11 other athletes. (AFP)
