I'm a grief expert, here's how Scots could get time off work when a pet dies
PAWS FOR THOUGHT I'm a grief expert, here's how Scots could get time off work when a pet dies
DJ and fashion expert Gok Wan was absent from the airwaves earlier this week after he was left devastated following the death of his beloved dog Dolly.
The Magic Radio host took the day off to mourn the loss of the French Bulldog, who he'd had for more than 13 years.

Lisa Hague is a grief coach
Taking to social media he wrote: 'I am utterly heartbroken and devastated that it's your time to go to the park in the stars.'
Fellow show hosts told listeners they were unsure if the star would return to the mic today.
And a grief expert says it's totally understandable that Gok would feel unfit to work due to the bereavement.
Now Lisa Hague, who coaches people after loss, reckons compassionate leave after the death of a pet should be written into law.
Lisa said: 'He's absolutely broken with grief - his pet was more than just an animal to him, it was part of his family.'
At the moment, there are set laws in Scotland for the loss of a child. But other bereavement leave is at the discretion of an employer.
And while some managers may be sympathetic over the death of a relative, there are many who may not be so supportive when it comes to a cat or dog.
But Lisa, who's married to ex Celtic star Kris Commons, says for many Scots, their pets are the closest thing they have to family.
She explained: 'The definition of grief is that your life is altered from the way that it normally is, it's a change to life as the way that you know it.
'When a child dies, a baby dies, grandad dies, people have sympathy towards that.
But if a pet dies, and if you're not super pet friendly, then it becomes 'oh it's just a dog', it's not taken seriously.
'But everyone's relationship to their pet is unique and, for some people, it's so much more than an animal, it's emotional support.
'I don't know if Gok's got a partner at the minute, but if it was him and his dog on his own that's a major part of his life.'
Lisa, who has helped people through grief since her daughter Lola was stillborn in 2008, said a pet can form a big part of someone's daily routine, which means their loss can leave them feeling totally bereft and alone.
She said: 'Getting up, walking the dog, feeding the dog, coming in from work, having that love and support there, walking the dog again before bed - it all forms part of a person's routine.
'So all of a sudden you're left with idle hands and a broken heart.'
Mum-of-three Lisa says the time you get off is a lottery, depending on how sympathetic your boss is. But, while she acknowledges the rules could be open to abuse, employee rights are always simpler if they're written into law.
She said: 'I do get that we have to ask, where do we draw the line? When does it go from dog to cat to hamster to fish, in terms of having? But dogs and cats are different, they do offer emotional support.
'And then there's how to police it - would you have to disclose if you have pets as soon as you start a job. Or if you then buy a pet, do you say in case something happens? Or do we just take our employees as being the loyal members of staff that we hope we've employed and trust them?
'I know a lady who's got a dog, who hasn't been able to have children and that dog is her world. If it died then that would be devastating for her.
'So in the end, I do think people should be allowed a day off, it should be written into practice and then owners can choose if they need that time.'
LAW CHANGE
IN most countries, bereavement leave for an animal is allowed at the discretion of an employer.
But in Colombia a bill was proposed by the country's Liberal Party to grant workers two days of paid leave to mourn the loss of a pet.
The legislation was brought in by politician Alejandro Carlos Chacon who said the rules would reflect how deep a bond someone can have with a pet, especially for those who don't have kids.
He also said the law would benefit employers as workers would be able to adequately deal with their grief without being distracted by work and be able to come back refreshed.
And if you are struggling after the loss of a pet, Lisa offered some advice for dealing with grief.
She says: 'Put in place some healthy distractions. And work on being able to talk to people who get it because there's nothing worse than somebody saying 'it's just a dog' or 'at least it wasn't a family member'.
'I had it a lot of 'at leasts' after Lola died, and she was a baby. So make sure you have a support network of people who understand.'

Bose × LISA Ultra Open Earbuds review: I tested the Blackpink singer's latest collaboration - they're the most comfortable earphones I've ever worn
K-pop star, White Lotus actress, and now tech mogul – is there anything Lisa can't do? The Blackpink singer has joined forces with Bose on a new pair of headphones – and they're seriously chic. The Ultra Open Earbuds have a glossy black finish and a cuff-like fit, and almost look like fancy earrings. Upon closer inspection, they even feature Lisa's signature chrome star, which is a sweet nod to her latest album. Unlike traditional earphones which cover your ears, the Ultra Open Earbuds sit a short distance from the ear canal. This makes them super comfortable to wear, but does result in some sound leakage, which could lead to embarrassment if your playlists look anything like mine. MailOnline's Science and Technology Editor, Shivali Best, tested them out this week. At £379.95, they're definitely not cheap – so, would you buy them? Bose × LISA Ultra Open Earbuds Our verdict The Bose x LISA Ultra Open Earbuds are the most comfortable earphones I've tried yet. They're barely noticeable on your ear, and could easily pass as jewellery amongst your other earrings. Despite not physically going into your ear, the sound quality is excellent - albeit with some sound leakage at higher volumes. At £379.95, they're definitely on the pricier side, so unless you're a die-hard Lisa fan, I'd advise saving yourself £130 and opting for the almost identical Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. How we test earphones When testing earphones, we try them across multiple real-world settings, including the office, our homes, and out and about. We evaluate the devices across a range of measures, including design, comfort, price and sound quality. Each pair of earphones goes through several days of hands-on testing, allowing us to provide an in-depth review to help consumers make informed decisions. Why trust us Shivali Best is the Science & Technology Editor at MailOnline and has been testing products and writing reviews for nine years. She completed a Master's degree in Science Journalism at City University London in 2014 and previously worked at The Mirror as Deputy Science & Technology Editor. Bose x LISA Ultra Open Earbuds review Design Lisa is one of the biggest fashion stars around the world, so it comes as no surprise that her earphones are seriously stylish. The case itself has a glossy black finish, and the chrome star - one of Lisa's signature designs - emblazoned on the back is lovely touch. Opening up the case, you're met with the chrome earphones, which could easily pass as jewellery. This is particularly the case when you put them on alongside other earrings, with the shiny wraparound design easily blending in with more traditional hoops and studs. I wore the earphones around the office to show my colleagues, who all agreed they were much cooler than standard in-ear alternatives. There's no doubt about it - these are some of the best looking earphones on the market. Comfort Unlike traditional earphones which cover your ears, the Ultra Open Earbuds wrap around your helix and sit a short distance from the ear canal. As someone who usually wears in-ear earphones, this open ear design certainly took some getting used to. Clipping them over my helixes for the first time, I was convinced I'd done something wrong. I could barely feel there was anything there at all. Surely this couldn't be right? Upon inspection in a mirror, I was amazed to discover that they were properly secured - something that I confirmed with a tentative shake of the head. I also really like that you can slide the earbud slightly up or down the outside of your ear - ideal if, like me, you like to mix up the number of earrings you wear. This design is an absolute gamechanger for comfort, and it's also probably a lot more sanitary than in-ear earphones, which can accumulate sweat, earwax and dirt. Sound quality It's all well and good looking great, but one thing is obviously key with earphones - the sound quality. Without a bud in my ear, I was initally worried that the sound quality would be compromised, but thankfully this wasn't the case. The earphones feature Bose's OpenAudio technology, which allows for deep, rich audio, even when they're a short distance from the ear canal. I tested the earphones in the noisy office, and was pleasantly surprised to hear my songs and podcasts with great clarity. The one slight downside is the sound leakage. Bose claims that in most environments and at most listening levels, people around you won't hear a thing. However, when I cranked the volume up, my colleague could hear that something was playing, and after a few seconds could even name the song. £379.95 Shop This could prove rather embarrassing if your playlists are as eclectic as mine... Price The Bose x LISA Open Earbuds are some of the most expensive earphones on the market. At £379.95, they're £150 more than Apple's AirPods Pro 2, £220 more than Huawei's FreeBuds Pro 4, and £190 more than the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2. What's more, they're £130 more than the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, which are identical, simply without the Lisa branding. Unless you're a die-hard fan or desperate for the chrome star emblem, it's probably best to save your cash and opt for the unbranded versions!

Peregrine Falcon chick living on iconic Glasgow building dies after 'bird flu' scare
Jack, named after lovable Still Game character Jack Jarvis, was one of two chicks born in April on the gothic spire of the Gilbert Scott Building at the University of Glasgow. A peregrine falcon chick which lived on the roof of a Scots university has sadly been put to sleep after suspected 'bird flu'. Jack, named after lovable Still Game character Jack Jarvis, was one of two chicks born in April on the gothic spire of the Gilbert Scott Building at the University of Glasgow. Jack hatched alongside brother Victor in the spring at the nest of proud parents Bonnie and Clyde. The stunning raptors were being closely monitored by a the Glasgow Peregrine Project. The duo inspired by the Craiglang favourites captured the attention of birdwatchers and the public with regular updates being shared on social media - with a series of cameras around the University campus capturing the action. This week Jack and Victor were all set to spread their wings with a series of attempts to spread their wings. But whilst Victor attempted his first fledgling concerns began to grow over Jack. The project shared a series of worrying updates earlier in the week. On Wednesday morning they shared that Jack was "seriously unwell". A rescue mission was launched that day which involved a member wincing themselves to a lower ledge on the tower. Jack was taken into the care of the Scottish SPCA but after assessing him he was deemed likely to have contracted bird flu. Vets were forced to put him down to "ease his suffering". In a statement. Glasgow Peregrine Project said: "It is with sadness that we must report that after pulling out all the stops and effecting a rescue, Jack has passed away. "The UoG and all the Project team have monitored him through the night and worked throughout the day to put the rescue plan in place. Work that would ordinarily be done in a month was done in a day to expedite Jack's care. "The SSPCA assessed Jack and deemed that he had likely contracted Bird Flu and sadly, had to put him down to ease his suffering. A video was posted showing the daring rescue with a member of the project hanging over the hedge of the tower and being carefully lowered down. He was spotted wearing full protective gear and a mask. The project say the rest of the birds will be "closely monitored". They added: "Given this circumstance, we will continue round the clock monitoring of the entire family. Your sightings and any significant observations would be greatly appreciated." Tributes poured in for Jack with well-wishers taking to the Facebook post to express their condolences. Poor Jack, I was so hoping he would be okay. But wonderful what you have managed to do, so quickly and effectively." Elaine Elizabeth said: "Oh that is so so sad. Thank you for caring & making sure he didn't suffer any more. RIP Jack." Yung Locarno said he could hear mum Bonnie giving out "distress cries" after Jack was taken away. He posted: "Very sad news about Jack. Saw him this morning on the ledge and he was clearly struggling, and suffering. "Was in the West quad for an hour or so this evening (after Jack was taken away) and Mum, Dad and Victor were all high up on the spire. Parents were trying to encourage Victor to fly, which he did eventually - a small circle round, high above the quad then back to the spire. "They all seem fine as far as I could tell, Mum was giving out a lot of distress cries after Jack was taken away - which is normal I would expect. Here's hoping they are all well and remain so." The Scottish SPCA said; "The Scottish SPCA was contacted by the project team with concerns about the falcon's health. Following a thorough assessment and consultation with our experts at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre, it was determined that, to prevent further suffering, the only humane option was to carry out euthanasia. "This decision was not taken lightly and was made in the best interest of the bird's welfare."
