Chip shop triggers debate after deep frying Aldi's caterpillar cake

Daily Record25-07-2025
One chippy has taken the deep-fried trend to a whole new level by battering a caterpillar cake - and the internet is divided over the unusual sweet treat
A fish and chip shop has sparked fierce debate online after deep-frying a chocolate cake. Taking inspiration from Scotland's deep-fried Mars Bars, a chippy in Telford deep-fried one of Aldi's Cuthbert the Caterpillar cakes. But social media users were stunned when The Silver Fish shared the result online.

The Silver Fish often experiments with popular treats, creating everything from battered cheesecake to battered spaghetti on toast. One of their latest creations caused a splash on social media.

A video showcasing the battered Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake received over one million views and hundreds of comments from amazed viewers, reports the Mirror.

After trying the creation, an employee said: "Wow, this looks unreal. This is insanity. It's so good." Ultimately, he rated the cake 12/10. Reacting to the post, several viewers said they wished they could try the treat themselves.
For example, a fan wrote: "Couple slices of that, add a scoop of ice cream onto it, I'd happily pay like £7.50 for that." A second said: "That's disgusting but why do I want it so much." A third viewer joked: "My arteries clogged with just a glimpse...and yet I want a slice so bad."

Another response read: "I mean, I wanna be outraged and sickened by this, but damn, I'm hungry now!" A fan added: "This looks UNREAL," and someone agreed: "That looks amazing!" Sharing more praise, a commenter said: "Need," and a food lover replied: "Looks delightful."
Unfortunately, some viewers were far from impressed. A social media user joked: "Just because you can doesn't mean you should." A commenter claimed: "Nothing is safe from the chip shops." Another viewer asked: "Am I the only one devastated that Cuthbert got frazzled to death?"
Someone teased: "Scotland called, they want their national dish back." A foodie added: "Sacrilege... not even a Colin... where's my pearls, they need clutching." A similar response said: "Justice for Colin."

Colin fans didn't have to wait long, though. In another video, the Silver Fish battered one of Marks and Spencer's Colin the Caterpillar cakes, prompting another debate. The post said: "You asked, we delivered," which has amassed over 80,000 views.
When it was time for "the moment of truth", the cake passed the taste test. "This is so good. This is nice and warm. This is exceptional. I'm going to give it a 12.1 out of ten," praised the reviewer.
However, some cake fans could not be convinced. A response read: "I feel like I've witnessed a crime against humanity." Another said: "NOOOO COLIN," and someone wrote: "That looks nasty."
Despite this, someone said: "Years on this earth and I have never wanted anything more than I want this." It's not the first time Colin the Caterpillar has received the chippy treatment, and based on the response from excited fans, it won't be the last time either.

Prince Harry's 'sadness' at losing out to Prince William is 'price to pay' in bitter rift

Just days after a close friend of both Harry and William announced the birth of his first child, Jennie Bond has shared how the news could push the royal brothers even further apart The Duke and Duchess of Westminster, who are good friends of both Prince William and Prince Harry, announced the birth of their first child. ‌ Both princes have a long history with the couple, with William and Harry's friendship with Hugh Grosvenor going back years. The Duke is even godparent to Prince George, and also reportedly to Prince Archie. ‌ With a new baby in the mix, and Harry and William's feud seemingly still raging on despite the rumours of peace talks within the Sussex camp and royal family, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond has revealed how the tiny tot could drive an even bigger wedge between the royal brothers. Jennie's comments come after news that Prince Harry will 'never be forgiven' by two major royals despite reconciliation hope. ‌ The royal expert told the Mirror that despite the joyous news of the baby girl's birth, the Duke and Duchess could be caught in the middle of the warring brothers if they are considering either prince for a role as godfather. Jennie said: 'As with a marriage break-up, many of William and Harry's friends have been left feeling obliged to take sides. Hugh was good friends with both William and Harry but, since the brothers' dramatic rift, the Duke Of Westminster has had to navigate a tricky path. ‌ 'And it seems he has largely sided with William, (at least in public). It was William who was invited to the big wedding, he was an usher, and William who stood alongside Hugh and his new wife Olivia cheering on Aston Villa in their exciting Champions League quarter final." Given the Duke's long history with William, Jennie believes: 'If there is to be a royal godfather to the couple's newborn daughter, the likelihood is that it will be William. There's already lots of 'cross pollination' between the families as far as godparents are concerned, so it seems likely that William will be asked.' ‌ While Harry is likely to be upset if William is chosen to the be the baby's godfather over him, Jennie said the decision would've been made easier by the Grosvenors due to Harry's current, and possibly ongoing, situation with the Firm. Jennie said: 'These awkward decisions are made slightly easier by the fact that Harry lives so far away, with no prospect of ever moving back to the UK. And that's not the ideal way to carry out any godparenting duties. ‌ 'So I think Harry will understand if he is left out and William is chosen as godfather. But it must still be rather sad for him to see his once close friends carrying on their lives without him, while William continues to enjoy the warmth and fun of their friendship. It is, however, the price he has to pay for making such damaging allegations and causing such a bitter rift with his family.' The Duke and Duchess of Westminster welcomed their baby daughter last week, announcing that the little girl's name is Cosima Florence Grosvenor. ‌ After revealing they were expecting their first child back in March, the couple announced the birth of their first child in a statement, saying the baby was born in London, adding: "Both the Duchess and Cosima are doing well. The Duke and Duchess now look forward to spending this special time together as a family." Cosima is of Greek and Italian origin. The name carries a beautiful, elegant meaning and is derived from the Greek word kosmos (κόσμος), which means order, harmony, or the universe.

'I usually avoid full coverage foundations but L'Oreal's new launch has changed my mind'

Mirror's shopping writer Grace swears by hydrating skin tints for her everyday base, but can L'Oreal's new full coverage 2-in-1 foundation and concealer compete? When it comes to foundation and base products, I've already leaned towards lower coverage skin tints. I love the hydrated, non-cakey finish they tend to leave on the skin. My go-tos include Ilia's Super Serum Skin Tint, £42, Sculpted By Aimee's Hydra Tint, £23, and Revolution's ultra-affordable Skin Blur Soft Focus Skin Tint, £5. However, recently I've been on the hunt for a fuller coverage foundation for those days when I'm looking for a little extra polish or want my makeup to last from the office straight through to post-work drinks. After trialling a few that felt thick, drying, and heavy, I finally stumbled on a winner. The product that's earned its spot in my routine is L'Oreal Paris' new Infallible Skin Ink 2-in-1 Foundation and Concealer, priced at a purse-friendly £14.99. This clever 2-in-1 hybrid acts as both a foundation and concealer, offering buildable coverage with a soft matte finish that still feels lightweight and breathable on the skin What I love about this complexion product is that it's designed to blend seamlessly, leaving behind no unwanted lines or patches, so your skin still looks like skin, just smoother. At the same time, it delivers more coverage than a skin tint or tinted moisturiser, effectively covering spots, pigmentation, or blemishes without feeling cakey. And because it's a two-in-one product, it cuts out the need to layer concealer on top, helping to keep your base fresh and natural. It also uses fusion technology to give coverage that stays put for up to 48 hours, meaning no midday touch-ups are needed. Another bonus is that it makes a great handbag product to carry around due to its compact and small size. As I mentioned, touch-ups aren't really needed. However, if you're in the office and want a little extra coverage for the evening, you can easily slot this in your bag and use it on the go thanks to its handy doe-foot applicator. My skin is oilier, so if you have very dry skin, you might struggle with this product clinging to dry patches. To combat this, I make sure my skin is fully prepped with a hydration moisturiser and a milky toner or serum underneath. My favourite ones are BYOMA's Hydrating Milky Toner, £11.99, Curel's Moisture Facial Milk, £20, and Beauty of Joseon's Glow Replenishing Rice Milk, £15.50. I love the glow they give and how much they moisturise the skin, especially when prepping it for make-up.

Ozzy Osbourne ‘buried near bat boxes' put in trees on Bucks estate for the animals to thrive

OZZY Osbourne has been buried near bat boxes and a family friend said it feels "like Ozzy had the last laugh'. The Black Sabbath legend, who died on July 22 at the age of 76, was laid to rest next to the lake in his Buckinghamshire home on Thursday. 8 8 8 A family friend told the Mirror: 'This was like a classic Ozzy move. The man loved humour and this sure would have tickled him pink knowing how close friends reacted to this bat situation. 'After all those decades caught up in this drama around bats and animal rights groups, here at his final resting place there are bespoke bat boxes to help encourage the animals thrive in the UK countryside. "It has prompted quite a few laughs and funny reactions. It is just like Ozzy had the last laugh.' One of the most controversial moments of the heavy metal singer's career came in January 1982, when he famously bit the head off a bat on stage. Something small and black landed near him on stage during a show at Des Moines' Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Believing it was a rubber toy, Ozzy picked it up and bit into it. In his 2010 autobiography I Am Ozzy, he wrote: "Somebody threw a bat. I just thought it was a rubber bat. And I picked it up and put it in my mouth. I bit into it. Immediately, he continued, "something felt wrong. Very wrong". Ozzy said he deeply regretted the incident as he had to have daily rabies shots for months. It remains unclear whether the bat was alive or dead - in a 2006 interview with the BBC, Ozzy described it as a 'dead real bat'. Tearful Sharon Osbourne reads fans' touching tributes to beloved husband Ozzy as she joins family at funeral procession Buckinghamshire - home to many brown long-eared and pipistrelle bats - has recently taken steps to improve bat conservation. On Thursday, an "incredibly emotional" funeral service was held for the rocker, a family friend told The Sun. Tents were erected on the 250-acre grounds of the house Ozzy and Sharon bought in 1993, along with a stage where tributes were paid to the rocker. The home was decorated with pictures of Ozzy, and mourners were given a photograph of him to take home. 8 8 8 8 110 of the singer's nearest and dearest attended, joining his wife Sharon and his children Jack, 39, Kelly, 40, Aimee, 41, and Louis, 50, his son from his first marriage to Thelma Riley. Stars at the service included Ozzy's Black Sabbath bandmates, Metallica's James Hetfield, punk singer Yungblud and Sir Elton John. Rock icon Marilyn Manson flew in from the US to attend, alongside Ozzy's guitarist Zakk Wylde and Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor. The family friend said: 'Everyone at the service just wanted to support Sharon and the kids, it has been an awful time. 'Toasts were raised, memories were shared - it was a very fitting goodbye. 'Ozzy wanted his final place of rest to be at home and he is buried at a beautiful point on the lake. 'As well as the 'Ozzy f***ing Osbourne' wreath, which made people smile, there was another floral tribute which spelt out 'Ozzy' that was placed by the fountain on the lake. 'There was a stage where people including Yungblud, who grew very close to Ozzy in recent years, were set to pay tribute to him. 'The day was incredibly emotional. Pictures of Ozzy were dotted throughout the house and a photograph of him was given to everyone who attended to take home with them.' Guests were sent a simple black invitation featuring a cross and the words: 'In loving memory of Ozzy Osbourne.' The road leading to the couple's Buckinghamshire home near Gerrards Cross was closed from 1pm. Mourners were transported from The Crowne Plaza and The Bull in Gerrards Cross to the house at 2pm, with the service starting at 3pm. The day before, thousands of fans gathered in the streets of Birmingham to pay tribute to Ozzy. 8
