Rocket launcher: When women are faster than men
When Kelly scored the winning penalty for England in the UEFA Women's Euro final on Monday, she launched the ball at 110 km/h. Her kick was faster than Newcastle United's Alexander Isak whose strike against Liverpool reached 109.9 km/h and was the quickest recorded in the EPL.
It wasn't the first time Kelly had upstaged the men.
Two years earlier, in the round of 16 of the 2023 Women's World Cup, Kelly was called upon to take the fifth penalty against Nigeria in Brisbane. Just like the Euro final, if Kelly scored, her team would win the match.
In what's become a routine so uniquely choreographed that fans have started mimicking her at home, before taking off, Kelly raises her left knee, waits, and then jumps onto it, propelling her toward the ball.
In that game against Nigeria, Kelly's goal reached 110.79 km/h which fans again were quick to point out was faster than any strike made during the previous Premier League season, beating West Ham's Said Benrahma's 107.2km/h shot. For another comparison, cheetahs, the fastest land-based animal, run at 110 km/h.
Though Kelly hasn't given much of an explanation for her technique, saying it became her routine when playing for Everton in 2018, her teammate Lucy Bronze described how Kelly's able to generate so much power in a TikTok video: When Kelly lifts her leg, Bronze says she's resting it: 'That's what helps her generate the power, resting the leg.'
Kelly isn't the only female athlete to outdo her male counterparts.

Diogo Jota: Liverpool's emotional Anfield tribute to late star and brother
It marks the first match at Liverpool's home since the Portuguese forward tragically passed away in a car accident last month. Liverpool legend Phil Thompson was joined by Bilbao's club president Jon Uriarte and they laid down a wreath of flowers each just before kick-off. One wreath was for Jota and the other for his brother Andre Silva, who was in the car with him and also died at the scene. 'Fans are now being let back into the Main Stand and there is no expected delay to KO. 'Thank you for everyone's co-operation.' That led to everyone in the ground having to leave before coming back in to pay tribute to Jota. The club also have a special programme dedicated to Jota, which includes various pictures of him on the cover, and a caption that reads: 'Forever our number 20'. The Reds have also already announced that his number is being permanently retired by the club. And at Anfield, it was a sight to behold as the stadium was covered in thousands of Jota flags and shirts. In the programme, there is a special message from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, which reads: 'He will always be with us. 'I always come back to the fact that we have to look after Diogo's family, his parents, and that's the main thing. 'You think about so many different things, and it's difficult to process. Isak back at Newcastle amid Liverpool transfer interest
Alexander Isak is facing showdown talks with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe after returning to the EPL side from Spain. The 25-year-old Sweden international headed back to Tyneside over the weekend after spending time working on his fitness at former club Real Sociedad, in Spain. English Premier League champions Liverpool have made a £110million (A$226m) bid, which was swiftly rejected by the Magpies. And if he does leave, it will almost certainly be for a British record fee. Isak reported to the club's training ground on Monday morning as the rest of the squad returned from their pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea. He missed the tour having cited a thigh injury amid fevered speculation over his future.
