Used luxury car sales jump 30% in tier 2 cities; 80% buys now digital

Used luxury car demand rose by over 30 per cent in cities like Jaipur, Coimbatore, and Kochi, showed data released by used-car platform Spinny.
According to Spinny's April-June quarter report, Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes GLA were the top luxury models sold. Metro-based repeat buyers continued to lead overall luxury sales, but non-metro demand showed a faster rate of growth this quarter.
Moreover,a significant portion of customers are now purchasing vehicles online. Spinny reported that 80 per cent of its car sales in Q2 were made through online bookings, compared to 77 per cent in Q1. However, 80 per cent of deliveries took place at Spinny hubs rather than through home drop-offs, indicating that while buyers are transacting digitally, many still prefer to inspect vehicles in person before final handover.
First-time buyers comprised 70 per cent of total customers, down from 74 per cent in the previous quarter. The average buyer age increased from 32 to 34 years. This points to a marginal rise in more experienced, returning customers opting for upgrades.
On the seller side, hatchbacks made up 55 per cent of the total inventory, led by Maruti Suzuki's WagonR, Baleno, and Swift. SUVs accounted for 21 per cent, with higher share in Chennai. Sedans contributed 18 per cent with Chandigarh leading in this segment.
Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai retained the top two brand positions. Tata Motors replaced Honda in third place. Petrol vehicles accounted for 82 per cent of all sales. Automatic transmissions formed 30 per cent of Q2 purchases, marginally up from Q1. Diesel saw a higher share in Bengaluru around 28 per cent while early interest in EVs and hybrids was observed in Pune and Bengaluru.
Women accounted for 26 per cent of total buyers in Q2, down from 28 per cent in Q1. Chandigarh reported the highest female buyer share at over 30 per cent. Most women opted for automatic hatchbacks, and Spinny highlighted the role of financing schemes in supporting this segment.
Around 58 per cent of customers chose loan financing, up slightly from Q1. Coimbatore recorded the highest loan adoption at over 65 per cent. Demand for extended warranty coverage also rose, with a 30 per cent attach rate for the Assured+ program by June.
Cars under three years of age made up 25 per cent of all vehicles sold in June, rising from 18 per cent in April. The trend was linked to warranty-backed offerings in Spinny's portfolio.
Spinny's data also showed that Bengaluru recorded the fastest overall market growth. Chandigarh had the highest share of women buyers, while Kochi led in home deliveries, with over 40 per cent of customers opting for doorstep handovers. Jaipur had the youngest average buyer age at 31 years. Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad continued to be the top markets by overall sales volume.
Spinny expects demand to rise further during Onam and Diwali. The company forecasts increased reliance on financing, a steady rise in digital transactions, and more activity in the EV and hybrid segments.
Spinny is a used car retail platform operating in 22 cities with 57 delivery hubs. It offers a mix of online and offline services, including 200-point vehicle inspections, return policies, and warranty plans.

Tesla grants CEO Elon Musk $29 billion in new shares amid falling stock prices

Tesla has granted CEO Elon Musk 96 million new shares, worth nearly $29 billion, just months after an American court voided his original $50 billion compensation package for being unfair to shareholders. The new award is designed to keep Musk, already Tesla's largest shareholder, focused on the company's shifting mission as it struggles with falling sales, political blowback, and an aging product lineup. 'While we recognise Elon's business ventures, interests and other potential demands on his time and attention are extensive and wide-ranging … we are confident that this award will incentivise Elon to remain at Tesla,' Tesla's special board committee wrote in a regulatory filing Monday. The shares, which vest only if Musk remains in a key executive role through 2027, are meant to gradually increase his voting power – something he and shareholders have insisted is essential for Tesla's future. In March, Musk began appealing the Delaware court decision that scrapped his 2018 pay package, claiming the judge made multiple legal errors. The court had found that the process behind the original deal was flawed and lacked proper independence. In response, Tesla's board created a special committee to explore new compensation options, though it revealed little at the time. Now, that committee has made its move. The new deal comes with caveats. Musk must pay $23.34 per share of vested stock—the same exercise price as his previous 2018 package. If the courts eventually reinstate the original pay deal, Monday's award will be voided or offset to avoid what Tesla calls a 'double dip.' Musk will also be required to hold the shares for five years, unless selling to pay taxes or the purchase price. Tesla shares rose more than 2 per cent in premarket trading on the news. But the stakes extend far beyond shareholder value. Tesla is no longer positioning itself primarily as a carmaker. Musk is steering it toward becoming an AI and robotics company, focused on robotaxis and humanoid machines rather than affordable electric vehicles, an abrupt shift away from the mass-market EVs he once promised. Meanwhile, the company is in a precarious position. Tesla stock is down about 25 per cent his year, as buyers turn to newer EVs from rivals like Hyundai and BMW. The Cybertruck, its first new vehicle since 2020, has fallen flat despite Musk's earlier prediction of hundreds of thousands of annual sales. The Trump administration's cuts to EV subsidies have added to the pressure, stripping Tesla of tax credits and regulatory revenue it once relied on. Musk, in a post-earnings call last month, warned of 'a few rough quarters' before expected income from self-driving software begins to roll in. The political backlash has been particularly sharp. Data from S&P Global Mobility, shared with Reuters, shows that Tesla's brand loyalty plummeted after Musk endorsed US President Donald Trump last summer. Activists have protested at Tesla dealerships across the country. Trump's proposed policy agenda would strip Tesla of federal support entirely, worsening the hit from slowing EV demand.

There are a number of trends that led to the growing popularity and relevance of the Creta over the years. The Creta in 2016, registered annual sales of 92,926 units. The proportion of first-time car buyers for the Creta has also grown by more than two-fold, from 12 per cent in 2020 to 29 per cent in 2024, which indicates its expanding attractiveness beyond traditional SUV buyers. The Creta is said to hold a 31 per cent market share in the mid-size SUV segment. What keeps Creta relevant? The Hyundai Creta has been kept updated through iterative facelifts and feature additions. Hyundai's decision to provide several powertrain options - petrol, diesel, and turbo - has played well in the mass-market segment that accommodates a wide range of customer requirements in going from a small to mid-sized SUV. Of additional importance to its continued success has been the comprehensive after-sales service that Hyundai provides and its resale value. The evolution of the SUV to demand - with design, more advanced infotainment systems, and improved safety tech - has kept it relevant and at the forefront of customer preferences.
