Mumtaz breaks down recalling her final meeting with Shammi Kapoor: ‘Agle janam mein milenge'

Hindustan Times24-05-2025
Actor Mumtaz and Shammi Kapoor worked together in the film Brahmachari. The two made headlines at the time due to their rumoured relationship. Now, in an interview with Radio Nasha, Mumtaz has revealed that Shammi once proposed to her and opened up about their final meeting before his death. Talking about how their romance blossomed, Mumtaz revealed that Shammi had proposed to her. However, as his father was strict, he asked her to quit films—something she wasn't ready to do as she wanted to continue working.
Mumtaz broke down in tears while recalling her last meeting with Shammi Kapoor. She said, 'He was very ill. It was his last birthday. I was invited by his wife. She said, 'It's his wish that you attend the party.' I was shopping in Bandra at the time and I said I would definitely come. I went there with Asha Patel. He was sitting on a chair, and he was still drinking. From afar, I asked him, 'Why are you still drinking when you're not well?' And that's when I realised he wouldn't live for long. Then I said, 'Okay, enjoy yourself.' He wanted to be happy.'
She added, 'I didn't say much to him. I sat beside him for a while and told him to take care of himself. It was very sad to see him dying. Agar kehte hain agle janam mein milte hain toh milenge (If it's said people meet in another life, then perhaps we will). If it's true, I don't know. But he was a wonderful person. He was a little fussy, but such a handsome man. If he had wanted, he could have had many women, but he was very choosy. I think he was incredibly good looking.'
Shammi Kapoor was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on 7 August 2011, suffering from chronic kidney failure. He was placed on a ventilator for several days, but sadly passed away on 14 August 2011, at the age of 79.
Mumtaz made her acting debut at the age of 11 with the film Lajwanti in 1958. She went on to act in films like Faulad (1963) and Daku Mangal Singh, but these roles led to her being typecast in the industry as a 'stunt heroine', stalling her early career. Despite the setbacks, she rose to become one of the leading actresses in Hindi cinema with hits such as Bandhan, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Sachaa Jhutha, Khilona, and Hare Rama Hare Krishna, among others.

‘Rekha asked to meet me in the same studio where they shoot Amitabh Bachchan's Kaun Banega Crorepati': Parineeta's breakout talent recalls life-changing interaction

While Parineeta remains seminal part of Hindi cinema history for having introduced actor Vidya Balan to the industry, it also launched the career of musician Shantanu Moitra. The musical drama completes 20 years in 2025, and several of those involved have been recalling fond memories of the project in recent weeks, and paying tribute to the film's late director, Pradeep Sarkar. In a new interview, Shantanu recalled an anecdote from the film's shoot, which involved his first meeting with the legendary star Rekha. She performed a cameo in the song 'Kaisi Paheli Zindagaani.' He told Radio Nasha, 'When I found out that Rekha ji was doing 'Kaisi Paheli', I was like, 'Wow'. But let me tell you a story about that. I got a call from Pradeep Sarkar. He called me to the set for the song's shoot. But I was working on some other songs at the time, so I told him that I was busy. He said that Rekha ji wanted to meet me. I was stunned. They took me to her makeup room. They were shooting the song in the same set where they shoot Kaun Banega Crorepati these days. This was the first time I'd been inside a makeup room, and it had those light bulbs around the mirror. Back to camera, the diva was sitting.' Also read – Born out of wedlock, abandoned by father, serially abused in Bollywood, she became industry's biggest female superstar Shantanu continued, 'She looked around and asked, 'You've made the song? It's amazing, I hope I can do justice to it. I have a small request. I would like you to stay for the shoot.' She was talking to a first-timer, I will never forget it. She would occasionally make eye-contact with me, as if to ask if it was going alright.' He praised the director painstakingly crafted storyboards, and said that every single shot was designed in advance. In a recent interview, Vidya opened about Sarkar, and said that she owes her career to him. But they had a falling out after Parineeta's success, after she refused to work with him on a couple of projects she didn't believe in. They remained on sour terms until his death, and Vidya said that she regrets not patching things up with him. 'Saying no to Dada was very tough, and I used to call him every day to know how he was. It's so sad that someone who I feel so much gratitude towards, I didn't manage to keep in touch with. I felt misunderstood, and someone told me that 'don't let gratitude become a noose.' But when he passed away, I was so broken. I wanted to tell him that whatever I am is because of Parineeta,' she told Filmfare. Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan worked together on several films, and have long been subjected to salacious rumours even though they haven't collaborated in over four decades. In a 2006 interview with Filmfare for Bachchan's 64th birthday, she said, 'Whatever I am as an actor, I owe 100 per cent to him. I just soaked in whatever he had to offer just observing him… When fans write to me and question why we haven't worked together after Silsila, the only rational answer that I can think of is that the wait to be able to co-star with Amitji is worth it. That everything happens for the right reason at the right time.'

'Rs 33 crore wasted': Former Ola electric marketing head questions Deepika Padukone's viral Instagram reel

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Bollywood star Deepika Padukone recently shared an Instagram reel as part of a paid partnership with a leading hotel chain. The video, which showcased her stay experience, quickly went viral and reportedly racked up a staggering 1.9 billion views — an unprecedented figure for a social media post in Nitin Chandil, former Marketing Head at Ola Electric, isn't convinced that the numbers tell the full story. Taking to Instagram, Chandil said he was 'flabbergasted' after reading reports about the reel's view pointed out that of the 1.9 billion views, only 1.3 million resulted in likes — a mere 0.07% engagement rate. By comparison, Padukone's other reels typically receive around 5 million views with an engagement rate close to 5%.'This clearly suggests it's a boosted (paid) campaign, which usually leads to lower engagement,' Chandil claimed. He estimated that organic views could be at most 10 million, implying that nearly 1.89 billion of the views were likely in Instagram's average cost per thousand impressions (CPM) at around $2, Chandil calculated the campaign's cost at roughly Rs 33 crore. He questioned whether such a massive spend made sense for what he described as 'not so engaging content.'Chandil later clarified that his CPM assumption might be on the higher side, suggesting the actual spend could be between Rs 8 crore and Rs 15 crore. 'But even then, burning so much money just to set a record and gain PR isn't cool,' he post sparked a debate online. Some LinkedIn users criticized the spend as wasteful, suggesting the budget could have been better utilized for influencer-driven or grassroots campaigns. Others defended the move, pointing out that the 'world's most viewed reel' tag has immense global PR value and that the buzz alone might justify the cost for a brand of Hilton 's LinkedIn user commented: 'Even if it's 1 crore, they could have done some UGC influencer marketing or a mass campaign that benefits people instead of just burning money for views.'Another defended the strategy: 'The fact that we're discussing it shows the PR value. The 'world's most viewed' tag is massive. For a brand like Hilton, 33 crore is peanuts if the global buzz is this huge.'A third was more critical: 'If it's really 33 crore, that's almost a criminal offence. I'd love to hear the brand's rationale.'
