Surveen Chawla breaks silence on casting couch trauma and the cost of saying ‘no' in Bollywood: 'It was crazy'
Surveen Chawla
opened a window into the darkest corners of her professional journey—one overshadowed by the
casting couch culture
that nearly drove her to quit the industry altogether. What she endured was not just rejection, but a pattern of systemic gatekeeping that punished integrity and rewarded silence.
"There was a time when it was all about the casting couch," Surveen admitted during the interview, her voice laced with a raw honesty that left no room for romanticizing Bollywood's glitzy image. 'It was just filthy, dirty to even step out. I was like, you know what, I don't want to do this anymore.'

'It Was Almost Like the Casting Couch Was Trending'
For Chawla, now 40, those early years were not just about auditions and ambition—they were about surviving a culture that made exploitation feel almost institutional. 'It was almost like the casting couch was trending,' she said bluntly, as quoted in her
Sidharth Kanan interview
. Each time she stood her ground, it cost her dearly. Offers disappeared. Roles slipped away.
'There was rejection every time I had the audacity to say no,' she added. 'It was crazy.'
For a time, she considered disappearing entirely. 'I felt like I had hit the end of the road,' she shared. 'I would prefer to lie low and give up, because that just wasn't my thing.'

From TV Darling to Cinematic Powerhouse
Surveen's career began with popular television serials like Kahiin To Hoga and Kasautii Zindagii Kay, where her talent quickly made her a household name. But transitioning to cinema meant entering a space where talent alone wasn't always enough.
Despite the setbacks, she carved out a distinctive space for herself in regional and
Hindi cinema
. From Punjabi blockbusters like Dharti and Taur Mittran Di to bold Bollywood choices such as Hate Story 2 and critically acclaimed performances in Parched and Ugly, Surveen proved she was here to stay—on her own terms.
She has also worked across multiple languages including Tamil (Moondru Per Moondru Kadhal), Telugu (Itlu Prematho), and Kannada (Paramesha Panwala), displaying range and resilience in equal measure.
Her
web series
work—from Sacred Games to
Criminal Justice: A Family Matter
and Rana Naidu—has further cemented her versatility, and her next release, Mandala Murders, is slated to premiere on Netflix on July 25, 2025.

Vijay Deverakonda's Mother Gets Teary At Kingdom Event In Hyderabad, Video Goes Viral
Vijay Deverakonda's rumoured girlfriend and actress Rashmika Mandanna was mighty impressed with the trailer of his upcoming film 'Kingdom'. Vijay Deverakonda has been grabbing attention for his upcoming action drama, Kingdom. Recently, during a pre-release event in Hyderabad, Vijay was accompanied by his mother Madhavi, who was seen getting emotional after Anirudh Ravichander praised him. A video capturing her heartfelt reaction has gone viral on social media. In the video shared by Artistry Buzz, Deverakonda's mother, Madhavi, was seen getting emotional after Anirudh Ravichander praised Vijay's performance in Kingdom. Anirudh said, 'I have watched the film—it's a milestone in Vijay's career as well as in my career." Fans have also commented and dropped heart emojis. Vijay Deverakonda's rumoured girlfriend and actress Rashmika Mandanna was mighty impressed with the trailer of his upcoming film 'Kingdom'. 'Wohhhooo!! What a trailer this is! Madness! Ahh! Got to wait 4 more days after watching this cool of a fair! @thedeverakonda I always keep telling you- you are something else! One day I wish I learn my craft so well that one day I can do the 50% of acting that you do! You are just …. Something else!" she wrote, while praising Vijay Deverakonda. Directed by National Award-winner Gowtam Tinnanuri, the film is positioned as a high-octane gangster saga that centers on power and the bond between two brothers. The trailer, released earlier this week, received a thunderous reception on social media. The Hindi version features a voice-over by Ranbir Kapoor, while Jr NTR and Suriya have lent their voices to the Telugu and Tamil trailers, respectively. In the film, Vijay Deverakonda plays Surya, a secret agent thrown deep into a covert mission that completely alters the course of his life. As the trailer unfolds, Surya finds himself in hostile territory, forced to let go of everything familiar. But what begins as a straightforward spy assignment quickly spirals into something much darker. The mission turns sideways, landing him in prison, where he eventually bonds with those he was meant to destroy. The buzz isn't limited to India. Overseas pre-sales have also seen sharp movement, prompting the producers to schedule massive premiere shows on July 30, a day before its worldwide release. Produced by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, and featuring music by Anirudh Ravichander, Saamrajya is set to release on July 31, 2025, in Hindi as Saamrajya, and in Telugu and Tamil as Kingdom. The cast also includes Bhagyashri Borse and Manish Chowdhary. The Hindi version is presented by Aditya Bhatia (Adwise Movies) and Atul Rajani and will be distributed across North India by AA Films. Karan Johar on Dharmendra-Shabana kiss in Rocky aur Rani: I may turn it into a film
Filmmaker Karan Johar, who made his directorial comeback in 2023 after a seven-year break with 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani', has opened up about the film's place in his body of work. As the film completed two years, he revealed that he considers it on par with some of his most iconic projects. He also addressed the much-talked-about kiss between Dharmendra and Shabana an interview with The Times of India, Karan said, 'It is right up there with 'My Name Is Khan' and, of course, my first directorial 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', which remains special as it brought a smile to my father's (the eminent producer Yash Johar) face. Our production house was suffering huge deficits when I made 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. It brought huge financial respite to my dad".advertisementThe film, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, was loved for its story, fresh take on relationships, and the strong chemistry between the two actors. But what also took audiences by surprise was the kiss between veteran actors Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi, which became a hot topic post-release. Reacting to the buzz, Karan said, 'There is a separate love story there. I may one day make a film on their love story in 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani'.' 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' follows the journey of Rocky, a flamboyant Punjabi played by Ranveer Singh, and Rani, a sharp Bengali journalist played by Alia Bhatt, as they decide to experience each other's family lives before marriage. Alongside Ranveer and Alia, the film also featured powerhouse performances by Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi. Looking ahead, Karan is now focused on his upcoming production 'Dhadak 2', a romantic drama starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. The film also features Saurabh Sachdeva and Vipin Sharma and is set to release on August 1, clashing at the box office with Ajay Devgn's 'Son of Sardaar 2'.- EndsTrending Reel
