Husband of allegedly murdered woman Frances Crawford charged with breaching bail

A Lockyer Valley man accused of murdering his wife and staging a lawnmower accident as a cover-up has been charged with breaching his strict bail conditions. Robert John Crawford, 47, was granted Supreme Court bail last month with a string of conditions. They included a $250,000 surety, a night-time curfew to remain at his Upper Lockyer home and the requirement to report daily to police. It is understood that the bail breach relates to the night curfew. Mr Crawford, an RAAF pilot, is accused of murdering his wife, Frances Crawford, and interfering with her corpse. He was arrested on Saturday in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, and charged with breach of bail. The matter was briefly mentioned in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday, where he was bailed to reappear in Toowoomba on August 14. He entered into a new bail undertaking. Ms Crawford, 49, was a psychologist in Toowoomba, and the couple had three adult children. She died at the family's rural property, in the Upper Lockyer region, in the early hours of July 30 last year. Mr Crawford was arrested and charged with his wife's death in October last year. Emergency services were called to the Upper Lockyer property at 3:37am on July 30. Ms Crawford's body was found at the bottom of a retaining wall with a ride-on lawnmower nearby. The court has previously heard that Mr Crawford will contest the charges. During his Supreme Court bail application, Justice Frances Williams said she was satisfied that the bail conditions imposed had lowered the risk to an "acceptable level". "The Crown alleges that following an argument, [Mr Crawford] strangled the deceased and then manipulated the deceased's body so it appeared she had died in an accident," Justice Williams said. The Crown had opposed Mr Crawford's bail application, arguing that he posed an unacceptable risk of interfering with witnesses and that no conditions could be imposed to ameliorate the risk to an appropriate level. A committal hearing is set down for hearing in the Ipswich Magistrates Court in October.

Outback Wrangler Matthew Wright hit with two more criminal charges

Celebrity croc wrangler Matt Wright has reportedly been hit with two more criminal charges following the helicopter crash that killed his friend and co-star Chris Wilson. The Outback Wrangler host was set to face trial in the Northern Territory Supreme Court next month charged with one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice. However, the charges are now set to be split into three components, a Director of Public Prosecutions spokesperson confirmed to NewsWire. The Crown filed an amended indictment and Crown case outline that contained three counts of perverting the course of justice, rather than just the one, the DPP said. The trial is set to start on July 28. Mr Wright's co-star Mr Wilson was killed in a helicopter crash while on a crocodile egg collecting expedition in the Northern Territory in February 2022. Pilot Sebastian Robinson was left a paraplegic. At the time of the crash, Mr Wilson was being hung from the helicopter by a sling. He left behind his wife Danielle and their two young sons. His criminal charges relate to his alleged actions after the fatal crash.

Optus faces $100 millon fine over unlawful sales to vulnerable First Nations customers

Optus has agreed to a $100 million penalty, subject to court approval, over conduct that saw many First Nations people from remote communities sold services they did not want or need. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said many of the affected consumers were vulnerable or experiencing disadvantage, such as living with a mental disability, or English not being a first language. Many of the consumers were First Nations Australians from regional, remote and very remote parts of Australia. The consumer watchdog sued the telco in October last year over the practices, which affected hundreds of vulnerable customers. In one instance outlined by the ACCC, a First Nations consumer who speaks English as a second language and lives in a remote community with no Optus coverage, was sold a phone. "The customer was approached by Optus staff outside an Optus store and pressured to enter," ACCC said in a statement. "They thought staff were offering them a free phone and other free products and felt pressured by staff to accept," the statement read. Optus has admitted that its sales staff acted unconscionably when selling products and services to more than 400 consumers at 16 different stores across Australia between August 2019 and July 2023. Optus CEO Stephen Rue said the misconduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. 'I would like to sincerely apologise to all customers affected by the misconduct in some of our stores,' Mr Rue said in a statement. 'Optus failed these customers, and the company should have acted more quickly when the misconduct was first reported. "I am leading the implementation of extensive changes across the company with active responses to the issues raised well underway," Mr Rue said. Optus has also signed an undertaking, accepted by the ACCC, that it will compensate impacted consumers and improve its internal systems, the commencement of which is subject to the Court making relevant orders. 'The conduct, which included selling inappropriate, unwanted or unaffordable mobiles and phone plans to people who are vulnerable or experiencing disadvantage is simply unacceptable,' ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe said. 'During our investigation into this case, the ACCC heard many stories of the impact of this conduct on affected consumers.' 'Many of these consumers who were vulnerable or experiencing disadvantage also experienced significant financial harm. They accrued thousands of dollars of unexpected debt and some were pursued by debt collectors, in some instances for years,' Ms Lowe said.
