‘Thunderbolts*' and ‘Sinners' stunt performer reveals which film was more ‘pressure'

New York Post22-05-2025

Stuntman, assemble.
Stunt performer Joe Dryden can brag that he worked on two of the biggest movies now in theaters.
Dryden did stunt work on both 'Thunderbolts*' and 'Sinners' — and is revealing which film was more strenuous for him.
'In my particular role, 'Thunderbolts*,' there was just a little more pressure there from a performance standpoint,' said Dryden, who filmed Bucky's infamous motorcycle scene for Sebastian Stan in the Marvel flick.

'I had a different challenge on 'Sinners,'' he explained. 'I am a character, a bad guy. I get shot and blown up in a truck. I play around in a utility kind of role and the prep in the beginning was a little bit nerve wracking just because I think sometimes I get intimidated a little by people like [director] Ryan Coogler, who's incredible.'
'And when I'm shooting a previs that I have to show somebody like that, that's a little bit nerve wracking, you know? But he's so nice that he kind of made the process almost easy,' Dryden said of Coogler, 38.

The stuntman continued, ''Thunderbolts*' was more of an, 'Okay, now I'm in the middle of the desert and everybody's looking at me and we've sold this gag that has to work.''
'I will also say Marvel is like a whole different universe,' added Dryden. 'There are so many moving parts. So many. There is so many people that have involvement and every one of them has such an important role in making this whole thing come together, you know? And it's an impressive thing to see the final product work because there really are so many hands involved in making it happen.'

As for 'Sinners,' Dryden wasn't surprised about the massive success of Michael B. Jordan's horror film.
'Sometimes you're on set and you can just feel that there's a little bit of a different energy, there's little bit a sauce happening,' he shared. 'I was in very early on the prep for 'Sinners' just because it shot here in New Orleans and stunt coordinator Andy Gill on that had me involved pretty early and I actually shot all of the previs for the fights and the action. And then we rehearsed any rigging that we had and all of our action beats, just to make sure that we were all feeling good.'

'But I had read the script and I remember reading it thinking, 'Wow, this is really cool,'' he recalled. 'And then when I was told it was being shot 70 mm for IMAX, I was kind of like, 'Oh, okay.' I initially right away went with Ryan Coogler thinking 'Black Panther,' and then just going right into thinking this is going to have a lot of VFX in it and a lot a digital. I was kind of surprised by that choice just because it's a different media and it's a little more challenging to work with, right?'

Dryden went on, 'So I think that was my first sort of like, 'Oh, this has a little bit of a different feel.' And then once we started getting into it, you can just tell. And then Michael B. Jordan as well showing up his first days of rehearsal with us and he's such a pro. Everybody was so cool through the whole deal that it just felt special. So I had a feeling.'
'It's, in my opinion, going to go down as a very important piece of cinema history,' Dryden stated. 'I believe it will.'
'Thunderbolts*' and 'Sinners' are in theaters now.

Chris Evans' Candid Reaction to Learning Robert Downey Jr. Is Playing Doctor Doom: ‘Huh?'

While the latest addition to the Avengers movie series will feature a mixture of current fan favorites, former actors reprising their superhero roles, and new faces making their debut, it'll also have a significant villain twist. Longtime Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. is set to play the villain role, and will be Doctor Doom in the 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday. While it's a noteworthy change for Downey, the casting decision drew rave reviews from fans. Many Marvel fans are happy Downey is back for the upcoming movie, although the decision to flip the high-profile actor from being a core member of the Avengers to the next villain they face was still surprising. One name that found himself on the "surprised" side of reactions when the news broke was another former Avenger and longtime Captain America star, Chris Evans. Evans recently sat down with Screen Rant alongside Materialists co-star Dakota Johnson to discuss their new film. However, the topic of Downey as Doctor Doom was understandably a talking point, and Evans revealed his candid reaction to finding out the news. Johnson asked the million-dollar question many fans likely initially wondered by saying, "He's a villain now?" This led to Evans explaining his own one-word response to hearing that Downey would play Doctor Doom, and offering an interesting food metaphor for clarity. "When I first heard it, I was like, 'Huh?'" Evans admitted. "But it's almost like cheese and the crust. You're like, 'There's nothing more we can do with this pizza,' and then you're like, 'Oh, damn. You know? What else? What if we did this? (makes flipping motion). Whoa.'" While a pizza metaphor isn't quite the direction I expected Evans to go, he deserves some credit for uniqueness. Evans has repeatedly said he will not reprise his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, with the shield officially being passed to Anthony Mackie. As for Mackie, he stepped into the role for the 2025 film, Captain America: Brave New Evans' Candid Reaction to Learning Robert Downey Jr. Is Playing Doctor Doom: 'Huh?' first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 10, 2025

When Is ‘A Minecraft Movie' Coming To Streaming On Max?

Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May that Jack Black and Jason Momoa's A Minecraft Movie would begin streaming on Max in June. However, we're a week and a half into June and A Minecraft Movie still has no release date on the Max streaming service, which will renamed HBO Max this summer. News broke on May 21 that A Minecraft Movie was part Max's new lineup of programming in June. The move was surprising given the expediency of the release coming to the streaming service, considering the film opened in theaters on April 4 and made its debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on May 13. In Warner Bros. Discovery's May announcement of A Minecraft Movie's debut on the service, the press release only said the movie was 'coming soon.' A Minecraft Movie is still playing in 346 North American theaters. To date, the film has earned $423.6 million domestically and nearly $527.6 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $951.2 million against a $150 million budget, according to The Numbers. A Minecraft Movie attracted unique attention early in the film's run thanks to the film's "Chicken Jockey" scene and the havoc that erupted during screenings. Piglin characters in "A Minecraft Movie." Warner Bros. Pictures With no new news from Warner Bros. Discovery about A Minecraft Movie about the release of the film on Max, the streaming tracker When to Stream is projecting a potential landing date for the film on the platform. When to Stream, which is typically accurate with its PVOD and streaming service reports, previously forecasted June 20 arrival for A Minecraft Movie on Max since that is the only available date that the service doesn't have a big title scheduled for release. In recent reports, When to Stream is sticking with its projection. The most recent mention of A Minecraft Movie's pending release on Max from Warner Bros. Discovery came in a Tuesday press release, where the title was mentioned among others that will be available to 12 new countries when the platform expands its global footprint in July. Rated PG, A Minecraft Movie follows four misfits (Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Danielle Brooks and Emma Meyers) who are sucked into a portal in a mine that brings them to the Overworld, where anything the mind imagines can be built with blocks. It's in the Overworld where the group encounters a smattering of block-shaped creatures and the human, Steve (Jack Black), who is being held by a nefarious, pig-like group known as the Piglins. Directed by Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie also stars Jennifer Coolidge and the voices of Hess, Rachel House, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie and Matt Berry. A Minecraft Movie, of course, is based on the blockbuster Mojang Studios video game Minecraft.
