Last Updated:
During the Mahila Samwad programme, Riya Paswan told Rahul Gandhi that it was his journey that inspired her to step into politics.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's visit to Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections sparked a viral moment during a women's outreach event in Gaya, where social media personality and grassroots activist Riya Paswan- widely known as 'Pad Girl'- said that she has political ambitions and vowed to remain unmarried, just like Rahul Gandhi.
During the Mahila Samwad programme, Riya Paswan told Rahul Gandhi that it was his journey that inspired her to step into politics.
'I owe my progress to the Shakti Abhiyan," she said, referring to the Congress party's initiative aimed at increasing women's political participation. She added that politics was the foundation for change in sectors like education, but said that there is a lack of female representation, especially from marginalized communities.
pic.twitter.com/7ymZftN8W0 — Riya Kumari (@kumarir6529) June 7, 2025
Riya Paswan, who lives in a slum and has mobilized a strong grassroots team through the Congress-led campaign, told the crowd, 'We've built a large team in slum areas during the Shakti Abhiyan. Now, if people have any issues, they come directly to us."
A video of the interaction, widely shared on X (formerly Twitter), showed Rahul Gandhi smiling as Riya Paswan addressed the gathering.
'You give good speeches," he told her.
She went on to say, 'I want to become a leader and serve the people. The Shakti Abhiyan helped me understand what politics really means."
Who Is Riya Paswan?
Riya Paswan rose to national prominence in 2022 when she famously confronted IAS officer Harjot Kaur Bhamra at a public event, asking why the government couldn't provide free sanitary pads- earning her the nickname 'Pad Girl.'

Answer my questions on Maharashtra polls if you have nothing to hide: Rahul Gandhi to EC
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday remarked that the Election Commission should answer the questions that he raised about alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra elections in his article earlier in the day if it has nothing to hide. In an article published in The Indian Express on Saturday, Gandhi reiterated allegations that there had been ' match-fixing ' in the Maharashtra Assembly elections held in November. He alleged that there had been an ' industrial-scale rigging involving the capture of our national institutions' during the elections. The Election Commission, however, said that the allegations by the leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha were 'completely absurd', ANI reported. It remarked that the entire election process, including the preparation of electoral rolls, takes place in the presence of representatives appointed by political parties. Following Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi's tweet on Maharashtra election, ECI says, "...unsubstantiated allegations raised against the Electoral Rolls of Maharashtra are affront to the rule of law. The Election Commission had brought out all these facts in its reply to INC on 24th… — ANI (@ANI) June 7, 2025 In response, Gandhi said that 'releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries' was not the way to respond to serious questions. The Congress leader urged the poll panel to publish 'consolidated, digital, machine-readable voter rolls' for recent Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, including the 2024 Maharashtra polls. He also called on the Election Commission to release all closed-circuit television footage from Maharashtra poll booths from after 5 pm on polling day. 'Evasion won't protect your credibility,' Gandhi said to the Election Commission. 'Telling the truth will.' Dear EC, You are a Constitutional body. Releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries is not the way to respond to serious questions. If you have nothing to hide, answer the questions in my article and prove it by: • Publishing consolidated, digital, machine-readable… — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) June 7, 2025 Maharashtra poll results glaringly strange: Rahul Gandhi Gandhi claimed in the article in The Indian Express that the outcome of the Maharashtra polls was 'glaringly strange'. He alleged that the scale of the alleged rigging was 'so desperate that, despite all efforts to conceal it, tell-tale evidence has emerged from official statistics, without reliance on any nonofficial source…' The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance had defeated the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which includes the Congress, in the Maharashtra elections. He said that the contentious 2023 Election Commissioners Appointment Act had ensured that the election commissioners were 'effectively chosen' by the prime minister and the Union home minister as they can outvote the leader of the Opposition in the appointment panel. The Congress leader further alleged that the second step in rigging the polls had been to inflate the voter list with fake electors. The Opposition leader was reiterating claims his party had made in February. The Congress had at the time urged the Election Commission to explain how the number of registered voters (9.7 crore) for the Maharashtra Assembly polls was more than the adult population of the state (9.5 crore). At the time, Gandhi had also urged the poll panel to explain why more voters were added to the state's electoral rolls in the period between the Lok Sabha election and the Assembly polls than in the preceding five years. Unsubstantiated allegations, says EC The Election Commission said that attempts to defame it by parties that got an unfavourable verdict from voters were 'completely absurd', ANI reported. It said that during the Maharashtra Assembly elections, an average of 58 lakh votes were polled per hour on an average. 'Going by these average trends, nearly 116 lakh voters could have voted in last two hours,' it contended. 'Therefore, casting of 65 lakh votes by electors in two hours is much below the average hourly voting trends.' The Election Commission said that the Congress' candidates or their authorised agents did not raise any 'substantiated allegations' about abnormal voting, either before the returning officer or before the poll panel. The poll panel also said that during the process to revise the electoral rolls, political parties appointed 1,03,727 agents, of which the Congress appointed 27,099. 'Therefore, these unsubstantiated allegations raised against the Electoral Rolls of Maharashtra are affront to the rule of law,' it said.

Punjab tech univ ex-V-C faces probe over wife's ‘illegal' appointment; CM Mann marks for action
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has marked for action a compliant against former Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Dr Sandeep Kansal, who is been accused of nepotism, misuse of authority, and favoritism — primarily concerning alleged irregularities involving the appointment and career advancement of his wife, Prof Mamta Kansal, it has been learnt. The former V-C has denied any wrongdoing. The complaint against Kansal has been marked for action by Chief Minister Mann and forwarded to the university registrar. According to the complaint, Prof Mamta was initially serving on contract at MIMIT Malout, but was allegedly transferred to Giani Zail Singh Campus, Bathinda (under MRSPTU) on deputation, and soon regularised, allegedly through the direct influence of her husband. The complainants claim that the entire process was conducted in violation of university and state norms and termed it a 'blatant case of backdoor entry.' The complainants have alleged that the appointment not only ignored due process but also resulted in financial loss to the government, as it circumvented recruitment transparency and merit-based evaluation. It further alleges that Prof. Mamta attempted the MRSPTU's PhD entrance test twice but failed both times. These tests, according to the complaint, were conducted under duties allegedly assigned by her husband. After the failures, she reportedly obtained a PhD from a private university, which the complainants said, may have been done to bypass the university's academic standards. It was also alleged that Prof. Mamta's academic promotion is based on research papers co-authored by her husband, which violates University Grants Commission (UGC) norms on conflict of interest. According to UGC guidelines, a spouse's authorship cannot be counted toward academic promotions. 'All these allegations are motivated and wrong. My wife has been in profession for 20 years and she has got the job according to government regulations. Anonymous complaints were made against me when I had charge as VC of MRSPTU,' said Kansal while talking to The Indian Express. Meanwhile, there is another complaint in which Kansal has been accused of misusing university funds, harassing junior staff, and soliciting bribes for issuing official notifications. MRSPTU Registrar Gurinder Pal Singh Brar said, 'We have been conducting investigation into the both complaints and will soon send the report to CM's office.' Kansal served as the third V-C of MRSPTU from July 26, 2024, to March 25, 2025, aligning with the end of his tenure as Dean of Faculty. He currently teaches in the Department of Physics. His abrupt removal followed allegations of allowing political activity in the V-C's office. On March 22, 2025, Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, reportedly held a lengthy party meeting and public gathering in the V-C office, drawing criticism from the AAP-led state government. An inquiry was ordered through the Bathinda Deputy Commissioner, leading to Kansal's removal within two days.

Sachin Pilot, Ashok Gehlot Bury The Hatchet? Two Congress Leaders Meet After Years Of Rift
Last Updated: Sachin Pilot called on Ashok Gehlot to invite him to a family event, triggering speculations about a possible reconciliation between the two leaders. Raising speculations about a possible reconciliation, Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot met former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot in Jaipur on Saturday. Pilot called on Gehlot to invite him to the tribute ceremony for his father and former union minister Rajesh Pilot, scheduled for June 11 in Dausa. However, none of the two leaders directly and publicly opened up about their speculated patchup. Pilot's father had passed away in a road accident in June 2000. Pilot-Gehlot Reconciliation On Cards? The duo had engaged in a political feud over the state Congress leadership, which led to a massive crisis in 2020. This meeting was the first one in years, triggering speculations of a likely reconciliation. 'AICC General Secretary Shri @SachinPilot invited me to a program organised on the 25th death anniversary of former union minister Rajesh Pilot at his residence. Rajesh Pilot ji and I entered the Lok Sabha together for the first time in 1980 and remained Members of Parliament together for nearly 18 years. The sorrow of his untimely demise still lingers with us. His passing was also a great loss to the party," Gehlot posted on X, where he also shared the video of the meeting, in which it was all smiles around. आज पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री @ashokgehlot51 जी से मुलाकात की।मेरे पिता स्व. राजेश पायलट जी की 25वीं पुण्यतिथि पर 11 जून को दौसा में आयोजित श्रद्धांजलि समारोह में उन्हें शामिल होने के लिए निवेदन किया। — Sachin Pilot (@SachinPilot) June 7, 2025 Pilot-Gehlot Rift The differences between the two leaders stem from Congress's Assembly poll victory in 2018, in which then state party chief, Sachin Pilot, was largely given the credit for the results in the elections. However, the Chief Ministerial post went to Ashok Gehlot for a third time, and Pilot was made his deputy. In July 2020, Pilot led a rebellion against Gehlot, the CM of his own party, along with 18 loyal MLAs, as he accused the senior Congress leader of ignoring young leaders and not respecting his role as the head of the state Congress party. Gehlot responded to Pilot's accusations with a 'nikamma" and 'nakara" (useless and incompetent) charge, accusing him of siding with the rival BJP to topple his government. As a result, Pilot was stripped of his Deputy CM role and PCC chief. Attempts were made by top Congress leadership, including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, to mediate between the two, however, it remained inconsequential. Congress was later voted out of power in 2023.
