Rising hedge fund stars at Sohn give their top investment ideas, including one that can rally nearly 50%

CNBC14-05-2025

A handful of hedge fund founders took the stage Wednesday at the 2024 Sohn Investment Conference in New York to share their best investment ideas.
The conference — one of the most anticipated hedge fund events of the year — kicked off with "Next Wave Sohn," a session that features ideas from leaders in the hedge fund industry.
Here are their picks:
Alexandra Engler, managing partner of Arene Capital, pitched Celanese as a top pick primed for sharp gains ahead.
Celanese is the world's largest producer of acetic acid and the most vertically integrated large Western producer of the compound, which drives a "durable cost advantage" for the company, according to Engler. Her fund focuses on what she called "idiosyncratic dislocations," or situations where securities experience sudden sell-offs due to secular disruptions.
Celanese shares have suffered a nearly 24% decline this year as the price of methanol — a substantial input cost in acetic acid prices — has been spiking for about 18 months due to global supply shortages.
Engler sees the stock rising to $79 per share, implying 45.9% upside from Tuesday's close. The hedge fund founder is betting on a global deficit of methanol to increase over the next three years, requiring the U.S. to increase production and drive higher methanol prices. That, in turn, should lead to a 30% price increase in U.S. acetic prices by 2028 from current levels, according to Engler's forecast.
"We believe acetic acid capacity utilization in the U.S. has bottomed," Engler said. "With capacity stabilized, we believe higher methanol will drive higher acetic acid prices."
Robinhood is what Kristov Paulus calls a "hypercompetitor," a company that builds products fast, has a strong vision and bold leaders that he believes are underestimated by Wall Street. Robinhood is Kultura Capital Management's largest position.
"Even in a more negative macro situation, this is quite reasonably priced," said Paulus, the fund's founder and CIO. "Underwriting this business is a hypercompetitor. This is betting on the organizations that are more likely to surprise us on the upside with products that not even we are thinking of."
Robinhood has plenty of growth catalysts and "considerable room to grow as they close the gap with incumbents," Paulus said. "This organization is executing better than they ever have before, and we see many different ways that they can be successful."
Paulus said Robinhood's product velocity has picked up in the last 18 months after stalling in 2021 and 2022, and that the company also has seen its customer retention rate rise since the GameStop mania in 2021.
Another durable tailwind for Robinhood is the expected wealth transfer from "baby boomers" to millennial and Gen Z individuals. Paulus said the company is the the most popular brokerage among millennial and Gen Z investors in the U.S.. Robinhood also stands to grow from its highly accretive crypto offerings and expansion into retirement and international verticals, he said.
Robinhood shares have jumped more than 65% this year, rallying 25% just this month.
Fintech company nCino, which provides cloud-based software used by banks and financial institutions, is at a unique growth inflection point, according to Felis Advantage founder Connie Lee.
Lee said nCino shares are attractively valued, trading at a 50% discount to vertical software peers due to challenges she views as being temporary. For example, nCino is currently changing its pricing to be based on a bank's asset size, rather than loan officers employed. This, she said, should help accelerate the business given that the company has a significant market share of U.S. banks with $1 billion or more in assets.
"nCino is a high quality business with a dominant position in a large underpenetrated market, yet it trades at a steep discount compared to peers due to a confluence of one-time events," Lee said, adding that the company "presents a particularly asymmetric risk-reward."
"For nCino customers, nCino is one of the most important pieces of software within the technology stack. It literally drives their revenue engine. So as you can imagine, nCino is very sticky, deeply embedded and mission-critical for those customers," Lee said.
What's more, Lee views nCino as a tariff and recession-proof stock and named the stock an "AI winner" in a world of dynamic complex banking regulations.
Shares of nCino are down 28% this year.
VictoryArc Holdings founder and CIO Joseph Talia believes Tel-Aviv Stock Exchange, or TASE, is an under-the-radar play that can triple over the next five years.
"TASE is a monopoly financial infrastructure asset that we think can compound intrinsic value in the mid-20s for many years to come, aided in part by a margin expansion opportunity," Talia said. "TASE' products are still priced at a massive discount to global peers."
"In many ways, it is a supermarket for the capital markets of Israel — except it is the only game in town," he added, noting that Israel's real GDP has compounded 4% over the last 35 years and is home to underdeveloped capital markets.
Talia believes that TASE offers a diversified and durable revenue stream, and said that exchanges, such as TASE, act as essential infrastructure assets with earnings streams that are generally uncorrelated to the market and broader economy.

Do Not Buy This Discounted iPhone 16 Pro Max—Here's Why

Do not buy this discounted Phone. Getty Images It should be obvious — but it isn't. That's the latest warning for any shoppers chasing this or any other too good to be true deals. 'Whether it's a new iPhone drop, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour or a major sporting event, The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) can push users to click on unverified links promising early access or exclusive deals.' The warning comes courtesy of Kaspersky's Threat Research team and is aimed at Gen Z, 'the most internet-savvy generation yet, known for their digital fluency and trendsetting influence… But as they navigate a world of hyperconnectivity, social media and online shopping, cyber threats are evolving just as rapidly.' Kaspersky warns that cybercriminals exploit the need for immediacy, crafting a sense of urgency that's catnip for this powerful generation of shoppers in particular, and leaves them at risk. Clickbait phishing schemes 'lead users to malicious sites that steal login credentials or distribute malware. Fake event tickets, pre-order scams and leaked' insider information are just some of the tactics used to manipulate this fear.' We saw this with Kaspersky's other recent Gen Z warning — the dangers lurking behind fake downloads for new movies, exclusive scenes and episodes, and other viral content. While cheaper than retail iPhones will always tempt clicks, the threat extends to nostalgic and retro products, driven by TikTok and Instagram posts. 'The Sims 2, Barbie Fashion Designer and Bratz Rock Angelz evoke nostalgia, [but] searching for unofficial downloads often leads users to malware-infested sites." Without any warning, the trip down memory lane leads to compromised devices or stolen data." The threat also extends to fast fashion, Kaspersky says, which has such a fast product turnaround and headline pricing that a gift to cybercriminals. 'Brands like Shein, ASOS and Fashion Nova deliver affordability and instant gratification, making them staples for this generation. However, the allure of these brands comes with a dark side. Fake shopping websites, hoax promocodes and phishing ads capitalize." Kaspersky's advice is simple: 'Start by taking control: verify links and websites before engaging, use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication for an extra layer of security. Be mindful of what you share online — and most importantly, remember that staying informed is your best defense.' As the FBI has warned, 'criminals often offer too-good-to-be-true deals via phishing emails, text messages, and fake advertisements on social media… Bottom line: if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is! Stay clear of unfamiliar sites offering unrealistic discounts on brand-name merchandise. Scammers frequently prey on bargain hunters by advertising 'One-Day Only' promotions for recognizable brands.' You have been warned.

Michael Saylor's bitcoin imitators are multiplying, from Trump to GameStop

Michael Saylor's imitators are multiplying fast. Dozens of publicly traded companies, a media firm controlled by President Trump's family, and meme stock poster child GameStop (GME) are all piling into a bet that Saylor used to turn a business intelligence software firm into a bitcoin juggernaut called Strategy (MSTR). The blueprint developed by Saylor is to use a combination of debt and equity to add bitcoin to a company's balance sheet — and lots of it. Since Saylor first announced his plans to do so in August 2020, Strategy has amassed more than 580,000 bitcoins currently worth $40.6 billion and become the largest corporate holder of the world's largest cryptocurrency. His company's stock has climbed more than 2,900%, far ahead of the S&P 500's 76% gain. Now, many imitators are trying to replicate that stock price success with their own big bets, adding bitcoin to their balance sheets even if their companies initially operated outside the cryptocurrency industry. Since 2023, public companies have increased their exposure to the digital asset by 160% and now hold roughly 3.4% of all bitcoins in circulation, according to Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani. In all, 80 companies have adopted the so-called 'bitcoin standard' by holding bitcoin as part of their treasury reserves, according to Bernstein and data tracked by Coinkite. Many of them are issuing equity, leveraging debt, or a combination of both to fund their investments. Recently, the limits for investor interest in such a play were tested. Last week, the stocks of Trump's namesake media company Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) and video game retailer GameStop each fell about 10% following separate announcements to amass bitcoin. Trump Media unveiled plans to raise $2.5 billion to create what it claims will be one of the largest bitcoin treasuries held by any public company, noting it is part of a broader strategy to integrate digital assets across its media and financial ecosystem. "We view bitcoin as an apex instrument of financial freedom," Trump Media CEO and chair Devin Nunes said in the release. GameStop, perhaps the best-known meme stock embraced by everyday investors during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, said it purchased 4,710 bitcoin — an investment valued at over $500 million at the time of the announcement. GameStop and Trump Media — the parent company of social media platform Truth Social and streaming service Truth+ — are not the only firms outside of the cryptocurrency world making a pivot to Saylor's approach. Of the 80 firms that now hold bitcoin as part of their treasury reserves, at least 36 originated in sectors other than cryptocurrency, according to a Yahoo Finance review of company websites and filings. That includes companies involved in everything from coal production and auto insurance to video gaming and online retail. 'It's not complicated, it's not even risky, in my opinion, it's just novel.' Saylor last month said to an audience that showed up for an Orlando, Fla., conference focused on showing other firms how to adopt his bitcoin treasury strategy. 'If you want to 10x your money, you buy bitcoin. If you want 100x your money, you buy bitcoin with someone else's money. If you want to 1000x your money, you buy bitcoin with someone else's money and then you leverage the bitcoin,' he added. The stock market's consolidation into the major tech giants has eliminated the chances for smaller firms to give their shareholders returns in line with major stock indexes, he told the audience of corporate treasurers, financial officers, and other executives. Bitcoin, Saylor explained, was their best chance out of this predicament. 'MSTR's Bitcoin acquisition playbook demonstrates how small-low growth companies can optimize capital allocation from a low growth business to a high yielding BTC treasury,' wrote Bernstein's Chhugani in a May report. 'Since there is no visible road ahead for value creation' at those firms, and 'the success of the MSTR model offers them a rare value creation path, these companies are uniquely positioned to adopt Strategy's Bitcoin playbook," Chhugani added. There are risks to this approach, however, since bitcoin can be volatile. The price of bitcoin is up roughly 57% over the past year and rose as high as over $109,000 in January. But the price also plummeted below $80,000 in April as Trump's trade war roiled the stock market before it recovered again. 'The main risk in running a leveraged 'bitcoin treasury' strategy is that a rapid drop in the price of bitcoin would lead to a possibility of bankruptcy,' NYU Stern School of Business professor David Yermack told Yahoo Finance. Another challenge is that 'MSTR's scale is hard to replicate,' Chhugani wrote. 'Not every Bitcoin treasury will be successful simply replicating MSTR's playbook, in our view.' The risks aren't dimming the enthusiasm of investors who have poured billions into companies making some version of Strategy's bets in the past several months, and some of the biggest players haven't even launched. 'I'm personally curious to see how the market is going to figure us out,' Jack Mallers, CEO of Twenty One Capital Inc., a soon-to-be public company imitating Saylor's Strategy with backing from Japanese investment firm SoftBank, stablecoin issuer Tether Holdings, and Wall Street investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald LP. Twenty One has raised $685 million in capital from private investors by issuing both debt and equity, making it the third-largest bitcoin holding company. It plans to list via a special purpose acquisition vehicle spun up by Cantor called Cantor Equity Partners (CEP). The stock price for this investment vehicle has climbed 300% since its April announcement. While admitting doubts that all firms imitating Strategy will make it, Mallers pointed to bitcoin's 16-and-a-half-year track record as the clearest signal for his firm's future success. 'Investors should always be careful assuming they're intellectually superior to the market," Mallers said. "That's how you get yourself burned." Another Strategy follower, Nakamoto Holdings, wants to add another layer of complexity to the bitcoin treasury scheme when it officially launches in the third quarter through a reverse merger. The plan is to acquire and become a maker of more Strategy imitators. David Bailey, a crypto adviser to Trump and founder of BTC Inc., will run the company as CEO post-merger. He said in an interview last month that Nakamoto is seeking to turn 25 separate public companies into Strategy imitators 'within the year." 'We're inspired by Michael Saylor, but we're not just running the bitcoin treasury play,' Bailey told Yahoo Finance. Nakamoto, which will trade under the ticker NAKA, saw its fundraising surge in reaction to Twenty One Capital's announcement. Through a mix of equity and short-term loans from private investors, including Chinese crypto billionaire Jihan Wu, the company has raised $710 million, according to its press release. KindlyMD, the healthcare software company Nakamoto is using as a vehicle for quick public listing, has seen its stock climb 370% since the May 12 announcement. 'Frankly, it's almost like the meme stock phenomenon where we know people are piling in just because it has worked for MicroStrategy,' said Columbia Business School professor Omid Malekan. 'Whatever benefit there is to be had in a number-go-up market could become problematic in a number-go-down market.'
