ITV shares first-look at Game of Thrones star's 'intoxicating' new thriller
ITV has unveiled the first glimpse of its upcoming thriller, Coldwater. The six-part series, set to premiere this autumn, stars Andrew Lincoln of The Walking Dead fame and Indira Varma from Obsession.
Set in the fictional Scottish village of Coldwater and filmed in and around Glasgow, the plot revolves around Andrew's character John, who finds himself at the heart of eerie occurrences as past traumas resurface.
John relocates his family to the rural tranquillity of Coldwater in an attempt to distance themselves from London. However, he soon grows frustrated with his mundane existence as a middle-aged stay-at-home dad, his suppressed anger threatening to disrupt his life as he knows it.
Following an identity crisis in London, where John failed to intervene in a violent playground confrontation, he yearns for a more peaceful future for his family, only to encounter further disturbances in Coldwater.
Upon arrival, he quickly forms a friendship with his next-door neighbour Tommy, portrayed by Ewen Bremner. Tommy is a charismatic, self-assured man and a dedicated husband to the local vicar Rebecca, played by Eve Myles, reports the Express.
On the surface, Tommy appears to be a man of faith, a community stalwart, and the self-proclaimed leader of the village's all-male book group.
Initially impressed and somewhat intrigued by Tommy, John soon finds himself ensnared in his web.
Meanwhile, his spouse Fiona, portrayed by Indira, harbours deep resentment towards him following their relocation to Coldwater, as what was meant to be a fresh start has utterly failed to rekindle their deteriorating relationship.
As her husband grows increasingly close to their mysterious new neighbour, Fiona's alarm bells begin ringing and she starts questioning whether Tommy is genuinely who he claims to be.
John's long-suppressed fury eventually erupts with catastrophic consequences, leaving him surprisingly beholden to his newfound companion, completely oblivious to the fact that Tommy is concealing deeply disturbing secrets of his own.
It's only when a string of disturbing events begins unfolding that John starts questioning Tommy's true identity.
The synopsis hints: "This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation.
"A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous."
Coldwater has been penned, conceived and executive produced by David Ireland, with Lee Haven Jones (Doctor Who) helming the opening three episodes and Andrew Cumming (Shetland) taking charge of the latter half.
Speaking previously, creator David revealed in a statement: "Cold Water started with a question I was asking myself. Where do I want to live - the countryside or the city? Such an innocent beginning, but from it came this dark, funny, twisted thriller.
"I was delighted when Sister loved the script and thrilled when ITV decided to commission it.
"And I'm amazed we've managed to attract such a peerless cast, led by the formidable Andrew Lincoln. I hope viewers will find it intoxicating."
Coldwater is set to premiere on ITV1, ITVX, STV, and STV player this autumn.

Warning: spoilers ahead for the first episode of The Fortune Hotel series 2. It's never ideal being the first contestants to be eliminated on a primetime gameshow. However, that's the reality that friends and cleaning business partners Chelsey and Briony faced when they embarked on the adventure of competing in ITV's The Fortune Hotel series 2. The second season of the show, which is hosted by Stephen Mangan, launched tonight, with 11 pairs making their way to a hotel in the Caribbean with the aim of checking in and getting their hands on a briefcase containing a £250,000 fortune. Sadly, Chelsey and Briony were eliminated before they even had the chance to enter the hotel, as other players were quicker to figure out a cryptic crossword that informed them where they needed to go. Thankfully, they're still in good spirits about the experience. 'It weren't all bad. We can't really complain. We had an all-inclusive holiday in an absolutely stunning place that not many people would see with your best friend. We got to do things on the island,' Chelsey, who was 34 at the time of filming, tells Metro. 'It was surreal, once in a lifetime.' Then we went visiting waterfalls, and the sea… The experience looking back on it was fantastic.' At the start of episode one, the competing pairs have to fill out a crossword that, when solved, tells them that they need to head to the reception desk of the hotel. The first batch of couples who reach the correct answer and get to the hotel are safe to scheme another day – but the others are all at risk of being eliminated right away. They each choose a briefcase to open, one of which contains the devastating 'early checkout card'. Briony and Chelsey decided to select briefcase number two, as it's both their favourite number. Unfortunately, they had selected the poisoned chalice. 'Unfortunately, our lucky number just wasn't lucky,' Briony quips. Even though the friends were in the show for a very short amount of time, they still left a big impression with their energetic personalities, racing towards Stephen on the beach after they arrived by boat. Host Stephen Mangan gives Metro the lowdown on what to expect in The Fortune Hotel series two… which he promises will have even more shocks than before. 'It was exciting the first time around because it was a show that had never been done before,' Stephen tells us about the first series. 'Sometimes these shows are formats that they've tried in other countries and have been a hit, so they know how they work. But we were inventing a brand new game, which is exciting and terrifying at the same time.' So what's in store for the second outing? The Fortune Hotel returned to ITV on Wednesday night with a shocking twist. The Fortune Hotel fans were left speechless after a major season two twist they "never saw coming". Hosted by Stephen Mangan, the second series sees 22 new contestants arrive at the hotel in pairs. They'll each be handed a mysterious briefcase. Most are empty, while one hides a life-changing £250,000 in cash, and another conceals the dreaded early checkout card. At the start of the new season, which premiered on Wednesday night (August 6), the holidaymakers landed at Grenada airport, where they were greeted by Stephen. However, their excitement was soon dampened when the host revealed that one pair wouldn't be making it into the hotel. "Your first challenge is to find a room key and make it to the hotel. But there are eleven pairs here and there only ten rooms available at The Fortune Hotel," Stephen explained. "Only the first five pairs to arrive at the hotel will be guaranteed a room. If you're among the bottom six pairs, then you will be in danger because one of those pairs will be heading home." The pairs were then escorted to the port, where they were tasked with unlocking their room key by completing a crossword. After successfully making it to the hotel, the top five pairs chose their suitcases, with Jake and Mike secretly picking the £250,000. Meanwhile, the bottom six pairs had to carefully avoid choosing a suitcase with an early checkout card inside. At the end of the tense challenge, best friends Briony and Chelsey picked the unlucky suitcase, and were immediately sent home before even checking in to the hotel. Another pair will also be sent packing after they receive the next early checkout card, but they haven't been revealed just yet. After watching the season two premiere, several viewers quickly took to social media to share their surprise at the early elimination twist. "Someone getting eliminated before it starts? Well I never saw that coming," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another added: "So much for ITV budget cuts flying 11 couples to the Caribbean only to fly one pair home back on day 1." While a third said: "Wow harsh start to the show I love it." A fourth fan echoed the sentiment, saying: "With only 10 rooms available, one couple's time in paradise will end almost as soon as it has begun. Talking about overbooking." Meanwhile, another viewer shared their suspicions that Briony and Chelsey could return, saying: "I'm guessing that Chelsey and Briony will get some kind of reprieve later in the series."

The BBC One series follows a group of strangers hoping to to win £100,000 by correctly guessing where in the world they have been taken to, but viewers began to get 'very frustrated' as things unfolded. The series, which is hosted by Rob Brydon, sees the hopefuls dealt with various clues as to where they might be, ranging from languages written down and other key hints. But as the competition heated up, viewers found themselves 'getting annoyed' by the sheer lack of knowledge that the contestants seemed to possess. One viewer took to X to say: "Getting annoyed with #DestinationX - the lack of knowledge is appalling!" Another said: "I assume it's deliberate in this show that they picked contestants who know absolutely nothing about European languages or Geography, but it's still very frustrating to watch." And a third joked: "We have some exceptionally clever people in this country. We win bucketloads of Nobel prizes, we invented nearly everything worthwhile, we have an elite of world class minds but most of our citizens are thick as pig s***." It comes after Gary Lineker 'signs a huge deal with ITV to host new show' after BBC exit. As part of the mission that was played out in episode three, contestants had to sort items often associated with various countries into the correct box. Host Rob Brydon looked on in a tense race to the finish but in the end, Ashvin was saved and e-commerce manager James had to go. Upon Ashvin's victory, he said: "My goal was to get on that bus, and it's gone. The goal was the Destination X bus," as James became candid about the challenge that saw him ousted from the programme. He said: "I'm quite said to be going really, I feel a bit blindsided by Josh, Josh chose Daren because he viewed the rest of us as a threat , then I can't say I wouldn't have done the same." Marketing executive Saskia was incredibly moved by James' sudden departure. Through tears, she said in a confessional: "This game is really hard. I know this is a game because it's really hard when you've made emotional connections with people here, it's really difficult. "I'm a little bit angry at Daren, I love having Daren here but I feel like it kind of could have been James." As the journey drew to a close, the remaining contestants had just minutes to figure out where in the world they were. They all gathered in the map room, and the one who placed their X on the map furthest away from their actual location was warned they would be immediately out of the competition. There was mass confusion, to begin with, although most of them seemed to assume they were in Munich. It was Ben who faced elimination after guessing that they were in Dortmund, and spoke of how he had taken the advice of Saskia, who in turn, voted for Munich after spotting a football ground. Prior to that, he had spotted a football team playing in black and yellow, which he believed could be Borussia Dortmund. Saskia said: "That was bad. But I need to start playing this game properly if I want to make it to the final." She added: "I don't even know what to say about it," as she hugged her former co-star and began to cry. After stepping off the bus for the final time, indeed in Munich, Ben laughed and said: "Well, I'm not where I am that's for sure! Wow! I'm in Munich. My gut was Munich. I saw Oktoberfest, but the clues got me. I got played a little bit. I put my trust in people."
