Will Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam Reunite? The 'Thug Life' director breaks the silence on the possibility

Time of India2 days ago

Veteran filmmaker
Mani Ratnam
, who is gearing up for the release of Thug Life with
Kamal Haasan
, recently addressed the long-standing curiosity about a potential reunion with superstar
Rajinikanth
. Their iconic collaboration on '
Thalapathi
' (1991) remains a cinematic benchmark.
Speaking to News18, Mani Ratnam kept the door open for a future team-up but didn't make any promises. 'I think you should ask Rajini sir,' he said, smiling. 'You never know. After 'Thug Life,' I'm planning a break. I have four scripts floating in my head, but none are locked yet. If they don't work out, that might be it,' he added, leaving fans with hope and intrigue.
A nostalgic look at 'Thalapathi'
For those who came in late, 'Thalapathi' was a celebrated reimagining of the Karna-Duryodhana bond from the Mahabharata, featuring Rajinikanth as Surya, an orphan with a golden heart raised in the slums.
His bond with gangster Deva (played by Mammootty) becomes the emotional backbone of the story, further complicated by the arrival of a principled district collector who shares a hidden bloodline with Surya. The film also marked the debut of Arvind Swamy and featured Ilaiyaraaja's unforgettable score.
'Thug Life' promises a gritty comeback for Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan
Currently, Mani Ratnam is in the spotlight for 'Thug Life,' his much-awaited gangster drama starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and a star-studded ensemble.

Thug Life box office collection day 1: Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam's film hurt by poor reviews, opens lower than Indian 2, Ponniyin Selvan; earns Rs 17 crore

The Kamal Haasan-starrer Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, was released in theatres on Thursday amid much controversy following the 'Ulaganayagan's comments on the Kannada language. It appears that the controversy leading up to the release, and the film's shadow ban in Karnataka, has hampered its opening day collection. On the first day, the Mani Ratnam-directed film made Rs 17 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. This is a much lower figure than that of Kamal's last release, Indian 2, and Mani Ratnam's last film, Ponniyin Selvan 2. The film was released on a Thursday and witnessed 52 percent occupancy in Tamil. Thug Life was also released in Telugu, with around 21 percent occupancy, and Hindi, with just 6 percent occupancy. Thug Life had over 1000 shows in Chennai and these saw around 70 percent occupancy. In Hindi, the Delhi-NCR region had over 400 shows, with around 4.5 percent occupancy. In Telugu, Hyderabad also saw over 400 shows with around 19 percent occupancy. Thug Life has received mediocre reviews, and this could be a factor in the film's performance in the long run. Kamal's last release, the widely panned Indian 2, directed by S Shankar, released in July 2024 after a lot of promotions and delivered an opening of Rs 25.6 crore. But it witnessed a steep fall afterwards, and finished its domestic box office run at just Rs 81.32 crore. Vikram, which released in 2022, was Kamal's last big hit, Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film started its box office journey with Rs 32 crore and finished its domestic run at around Rs 250 crore. The first part, which released in 2022, opened with Rs 34 crore, and collected Rs 266 crore at the domestic box office. The second part, which released in 2023, opened with Rs 24 crore and finished its domestic run with a little over Rs 180 crore. It is yet to be seen if Thug Life can follow that path, but so far, it appears that audiences weren't as excited about the pair's long-overdue reunion as it might have seemed. The Kannada controversy started after Kamal made a remark at the film's audio launch. In a conversation with actor Shivarajkumar, he called him 'family in another state' and remarked, 'Your language was born out of Tamil.' Several groups, political and otherwise, raised their objection to this statement and sought an apology from Kamal Haasan. He refused to apologise and the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC) threatened to ban his film. The ban was eventually put in place but Kamal refuse to issue an apology. At another event this past week, he did not address the controversy but thanked the people from Tamil Nadu for standing by him. 'I should thank the entire state of Tamil Nadu, which stood behind me. I completely understand the meaning of the phrase, 'Uyire, Urave, Tamizhe (my life and family are Tamil)' that I use during public addresses. And I stand by it,' he said.

Kanye West urges Elon Musk and Donald Trump to reconcile amid EXPLOSIVE public feud; sparks meme fest among Twitterati

Kanye West has stepped into the increasingly bitter feud between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and former U.S. President Donald Trump , urging the once-allied powerhouses to reconcile. In a post on his Twitter handle, the rapper pleaded with the president and the billionaire, to call a truce saying, "Broooos please noooooo. We love you both so much.' The feud between Musk and Trump escalated over the past week after the Tesla founder publicly criticised what he described as Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' and urged voters to reject any Republican lawmakers who supported it. Trump responded in kind, writing on Truth Social that he was 'very disappointed in Elon' and speculating that the billionaire had 'just gone CRAZY!' The former president went a step further, threatening to terminate Musk's lucrative federal contracts. "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,' Trump wrote. In retaliation, Musk lobbed a serious allegation, claiming that Trump appears in sealed case files linked to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein . 'Time to drop the really big bomb: [Donald Trump] is in the Epstein files,' Musk posted. 'That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!' Amid the back-and-forth messages from the two men, Kanye stepped in to play peacemaker. A longtime Trump supporter he wrote 'Fk anybody who don't love Trump. You're dumb.' Reacting to the posts from the three, fans took to their handles to react humorously with memes. Linking the feud to a 'divorce', one asked, "Who gets custody of Kanye in the Donald Trump v Elon Musk divorce?"
