Utusan Malaysia reported that Kedah Public Works, Natural Resources, Water Supply and Environment Committee chairman Mohamad Yusuf@Munir Zakaria said only repair works are being carried out at this stage due to the high cost involved. 'The 36km pipeline, which runs from the mainland to Langkawi and is nearly 30 years old, would cost billions to replace entirely. 'For now, we are allocating RM50 million — RM10 million for consultancy and RM40 million for repair works,' he was quoted as saying during the Kedah State Legislative Assembly today. Mohamad Yusuf, who is also the Perikatan Nasional (PN) assemblyman for Kuala Nerang, was responding to a supplementary question from Teh Swee Leong, who asked for an estimate to replace the entire seabed pipeline. The Paktan Harapan (PH) assemblyman for Kota Darul Aman had noted that repairing leaks in several sections incurred high costs each time. Mohamad Yusuf said that since Syarikat Air Darul Aman (SADA) took over the Taliworks Langkawi concession on November 1, 2020, 42 new leaks have been repaired in-house using underwater clamp methods. 'Leak inspections are carried out every two weeks, depending on weather and sea conditions. 'The total cost of inspecting and repairing both old and new leaks is RM3.1 million,' he said. Earlier, in response to a question from Shamsilah Siru (PN-Ayer Hangat), he said SADA is set to implement a pipeline repair project to improve the stability of Langkawi's treated water supply. The project is in its final procurement stage and is scheduled to begin in August, with completion targeted for February 2026. It will involve the installation of 19 pressure steel clamps, six rubber patch stoppers and rust prevention using cathodic protection techniques. The highest recorded leakage rate was 55 per cent — equivalent to 33 million litres per day (MLD) — compared with the 60 MLD output from the Sungai Baru Water Treatment Plant. Ex-pay TV staff faces 743 charges, faints in court on 30th
KUALA LUMPUR: A former employee of a pay TV company fainted in court after the 30th of 743 charges was read out to her for allegedly tampering with customer account data by converting regular accounts to corporate accounts. Nora Idayu Jaafar,48, collapsed in the dock shortly after entering her non-guilty plea to the 30th charge before Sessions Court judge Norma Ismail. The proceedings had to be halted while the court's security personnel and medical assistants from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital were deployed to the courtroom to provide assistance. After Nora Idayu regained consciousness, Norma released her on a RM10,000 bail in one surety for all 30 charges. The judge ordered her to return to the court on June 26 to face the remaining 713 charges. The court also ordered her to report to the police station once a month and surrender her passport. Nora Idayu, who was an associate of the commercial support unit, is accused of converting the regular clients account to corporate account without authorisation on Astro's Amdocs CRM database. She claimed trial to each of the 30 charges framed under Section 5(1) of the Computer Crimes Act punishable under Section 5(4) of the same act. Each charge carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or a jail term not exceeding seven years or both upon conviction. She allegedly committed the offences at Astro's office in Menara Icon at Jalan Tun Razak. Deputy public prosecutor Rohaiza Abdul Rahman prosecuted while Nora Idayu had no legal representation.

More Tamu Desa to be built in Sabah, Sarawak this year

Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (Kuskop) will construct more 'tamu desa' (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states. Its Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the Madani Government, through Kuskop, had allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Development Project this year. He added that this included an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Madani Rakyat Programme in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 tamu desa across Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope the same number or more can be built,' he said in a statement. He was speaking after officiating the Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat Kaamatan Festival in Kota Belud and subsequently launching the village's tamu desa, which was completed this year at a cost of RM250,000. Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. 'I have been informed by the village leaders that these premises greatly benefit the residents, especially mothers and small entrepreneurs who conduct business weekly. They not only provide a more comfortable space for selling but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. According to him, the requirements for tamu desa development vary depending on the location and scope of work determined by the District Office, whether for new construction or upgrading, involving costs ranging from RM100,000 to RM300,000. As of May this year, he said, applications for new construction or upgrading of tamu desa premises in Sabah had reached RM40 million, including applications carried over from last year that could not be implemented, and this amount did not yet include applications from Sarawak 'Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what was implemented last year. What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident that this programme will be among the key inputs of the ministry in the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. Ex-salesman fined RM50,000 for credit card fraud

KOTA KINABALU (June 4): A former cellphone company salesman was fined a total of RM50,000 by the Sessions Court here on Wednesday after pleading guilty to six charges under the Computer Crimes Act 1997. Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim handed down the fines to Mohd Ariffin Rafiuddin, 35, who admitted to all charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Act. The section provides for a fine of up to RM150,000 or imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both, upon conviction. For the first and second charges, Mohd Ariffin was fined RM5,000 each, in default 10 days' imprisonment per charge. For the remaining charges, he was fined RM10,000 each, in default 20 days' jail per charge. Mohd Ariffin, who is currently unemployed, admitted to unauthorized access of a terminal operating system of a credit card under his name with the intent to cheat. On the first and second counts, he used the system to make payments for two branded smartphones, each worth RM5,999. On the third count, he committed a similar offence by purchasing two branded gadgets and smartphones worth RM29,095. The fourth charge involved four branded smartphones valued at RM30,695. On the fifth count, he made payments for four gadgets worth RM26,996. On the sixth count, he purchased two gadgets amounting to RM10,398. All the offences were committed at a shop in a shopping complex here on June 12, 2024. Mohd Ariffin was represented by counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence.
