We're only doing our job as opposition, Sarawak DAP tells GPS

PETALING JAYA : Sarawak DAP has fired back at Gabungan Parti Sarawak assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang for condemning the party's continuous attacks against GPS, calling it an attempt to stifle legitimate dissent and scrutiny.
Michael Kong, an aide to Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen, said the party was simply fulfilling its role as the opposition and check and balance in the Sarawak assembly.
'Our duty is to represent the people, question excesses, and hold the government accountable. That is what a healthy democracy demands,' Kong said in a statement.
Earlier, Lo said Sarawak DAP's repeated attacks on GPS called the government's unity into question.
The Batu Kitang assemblyman said previous apologies from DAP over past offensive statements were discredited by their actions of repeatedly undermining Sarawak's leadership.
Lo pointed out that DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook and adviser Lim Guan Eng had apologised to GPS over past statements by DAP leaders that offended the Sarawak government and people.
He said these apologies, made before the unity government's formation, were quickly discredited by Sarawak DAP's actions.
'Sarawak DAP has done nothing but oppose GPS at every turn, questioning our policies, casting doubt on our initiatives, and repeatedly undermining Sarawak's leadership,' he said.
Kong also slammed GPS assemblyman Wilfred Yap, who criticised the federal government for sidelining East Malaysia despite debt reduction by RM22 billion over the last two years.
He said it is unrealistic to expect the government to slash new borrowings from RM99 billion to zero within one to two years, and that Yap's criticism 'reeks of double standards and selective outrage'
'It is deeply hypocritical for Yap to condemn the reduction of federal borrowings while applauding the Sarawak government's budgetary approach, which sees an increasing reliance on debt through its so-called 'alternative funding' mechanism,' he said.
Kong also questioned Yap's criticism of the recently announced RM100 cash aid by the government to all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above.
'Cash handouts are one of the most effective ways to directly channel financial aid to the people, particularly those in the B40 group.
'Is Yap now suggesting that programmes such as Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah should be discontinued because they are also cash handouts?
'If he truly opposes cash aid, he must also be prepared to tell the people of Sarawak that they should not receive any form of direct financial assistance,' he said.

Govt launches 'Anak Merdeka Malaysia' initiative to boost patriotic spirit

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Unity Ministry, through the National Archives of Malaysia (ANM), has introduced the "Anak Merdeka Malaysia" initiative to ignite patriotic spirit in conjunction with this year's National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) celebrations. It said the programme also aims to honour Malaysians born on two of the nation's most historic dates – August 31 and September 16 – as a symbol of the country's struggle, independence and unity. Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said in the statement that the initiative is not merely about celebrating birthdays, but also about recognising the profound meaning those dates hold in strengthening national identity and patriotism. "Through 'Anak Merdeka Malaysia', we are not only celebrating their birthdays, but also uniting the voices of the people under one national identity. "This is the true face of Malaysia Madani – a nation that honours its history, nurtures hope, and unites its people," said Aaron. According to the ministry, registration is now open to all Malaysian citizens who share a birthday on either of these two historic dates, regardless of background, age or ethnicity. The statement added that those who register will be given the special opportunity to take part in various activities during the official national-level celebrations, receive commemorative gifts, and be honoured as symbolic national heroes representing the spirit of Malaysian unity. "The ministry calls on all Malaysians to help spread this information to family members, friends and local communities, so that more people can be celebrated as part of the Merdeka legacy. "This is our chance as citizens to strengthen patriotism through inclusive and meaningful participation," it said in a statement yesterday. – Bernama

RTS Link achieves major milestone of ICQC structure

JOHOR BARU: The construction of the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project reached a major milestone today with the structural completion of the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (ICQC) at Bukit Chagar, here. Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT) Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said the structural completion of the ICQC was marked with a topping-out ceremony by IJM Construction Sdn Bhd (IJM), the appointed contractor for the ICQC package under the project. "This milestone signifies that the project has moved into the next stage, which is the final design fit-out installations alongside the facade installation, which will commence in September 2025," he said in a statement yesterday. He said the ICQC is a critical component of the project and will feature co-located clearance facilities for both Malaysian and Singaporean authorities, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. Mohd Zarif said the topping-out ceremony officiated today reflects the collective determination, professionalism, coordination and technical excellence of IJM Construction, consultants and contractors in delivering a nationally strategic infrastructure and bringing the ICQC to its current stage of development. He said it also stands as a testament to the professionalism, coordination and technical excellence demonstrated by IJM Construction, as well as all consultants and contractors, in bringing the ICQC to its current stage of development. In the meantime, Mohd Zarif said the track installation and structural works for several key components of the RTS Link project, namely the Marine Viaduct, Bukit Chagar Station and Wadi Hana Depot, have been completed, while the interior works at the Wadi Hana Depot are expected to be fully completed by December this year. "Meanwhile, installation of the station's signature roof facade is currently underway at Bukit Chagar Station," he said. At the same time, he said the power supply to the Wadi Hana Depot was successfully energised in June 2025, two months ahead of schedule, through close coordination with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), enabling early preparations for systems testing to begin. "As per the terms of the bilateral agreement, the next key milestone will be the dynamic testing of the RTS train system, scheduled for May 2026. "This critical phase will see the train operating along the full alignment from Wadi Hana Depot through to stations, paving the way for operational validation and readiness," he said. The RTS Link project, scheduled to be completed in December 2026 and begin operations in early 2027, is a four-kilometre commuter rail network connecting Malaysia and Singapore, covering the route between two stations, namely Bukit Chagar here and Woodlands North in Singapore. The rail transport system has a capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with an expected daily ridership of about 40,000 passengers. – Bernama

Ceasefire: Hun Manet says brilliant results in achieved in Putrajaya

PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet hailed the ceasefire as a "brilliant result" and thanked Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his efforts to initiate the peace talks in Putrajaya today. The Malaysia-initiated special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia to resolve the ongoing military confrontation along the border areas of the two countries ended on a positive note. Both nations agreed to end fighting at midnight on Monday, a major step towards reducing tensions and restoring peace and security. "A brilliant result of the meeting, and I thank Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for taking the initiative to coordinate and host the meeting. "I believe that this ceasefire agreement between the Cambodian army and the Thai army is a key basis for building mutual trust and improvement of the situation towards normalcy in the future," Manet said on his Facebook posting upon his return from Malaysia this evening. Manet and Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai met for the first time since tension broke out between the two neighbours on July 24. Cambodia and Thailand were dragged into a diplomatic crisis following the armed conflict in the northern part of the Kingdom. In his posting, Manet also thanked the United States President Donald Trump and the Chinese government for their support of the ceasefire efforts. Over 80,000 people have been displaced, while 13 people, including soldiers and civilians, have lost their lives since the conflict erupted last Thursday. – Bernama
