Girls flag football kicks off at Austin public schools
The Austin Independent School District is hosting its inaugural girls flag football tournament this weekend, with the support of the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott.
Why it matters: Women's sports are growing in Austin, from soccer to rugby to flag football.
The big picture: Texas' University Interscholastic League (UIL) doesn't formally consider flag football a high school sport, but it has grown nationwide as another option for female athletes.
This year, the NCAA's Atlantic East Conference introduced women's flag football. Men's and women's flag football will also debut at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Austin-based Concordia University Texas launched a varsity women's flag football team in the fall.
What they're saying: "Football has given me so much. Now, as a 'Girl Dad' myself, I want to thank the girls for paving the way today, and for breaking barriers to grow the game," Prescott said in a statement earlier this year announcing the Cowboys' partnership with AISD and other Texas public school districts.
Zoom out: The NFL has been working since 2016 to encourage more girls to play flag football.
It is now a varsity sport in 14 states and at more than 50 colleges and universities, per the Cowboys.
UIL has said more schools need to establish programs for the league to consider sanctioning the sport in Texas.
Zoom in: The Houston Texans earlier this year announced partnerships with Round Rock ISD and Pflugerville ISD to support girls flag football programs.
📍 If you go: Squads from a dozen AISD high schools will compete today and tomorrow, starting at 5:30pm at the Toney Burger Athletic Center in South Austin. Admission is free.

QB Joe Milton says Patriots trading him was a ‘blessing' for 4 reasons
Joe Milton said he was caught off guard by the New England Patriots trading him away. But he sounds happy with his new landing spot. Talking to reporters Thursday, the second-year quarterback said that landing with the Dallas Cowboys was a 'blessing.' Advertisement Why's that? Milton outlined four reasons. 1) 'Back in the heat, for one,' the Florida native said about moving from the cold of Foxborough. 2) 'They allowed me to play in a dome for two,' he said about getting to play at AT&T Stadium. 3) 'For three, it's America's team,' Milton said. 4) 'Also, it's just great to learn from somebody like Dak," Milton said about the opportunity to play behind starting quarterback Dak Prescott. Milton revealed that he was 'surprised' that the Patriots traded him after one season. The quarterback said he woke up to a call that the deal was dealing him away. He said the only thing he could do in that moment was to thank God while he waited to learn where he'd end up. Advertisement 'Coming here was a blessing,' Milton said. I didn't know it was going to be here. My agent said it was multiple teams that called. So I didn't know where I was going to end up. I was just thankful to go somewhere.' The Patriots drafted Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. After some flashes in the preseason, Milton had a strong showing in New England's regular-season finale. With a new coaching staff in place and Drake Maye locking down the quarterback job, the Patriots opted to deal Milton to Dallas. New England gave up Milton and a Round 7 pick in exchange for a Round 5 pick. More Patriots Content Read the original article on MassLive.

Inter Milan Could Offer West Ham United & Aston Villa Linked Germany Star To Man United As Part Of Deal For Rasmus Hojlund
Inter Milan Could Offer West Ham United & Aston Villa Linked Germany Star To Man United As Part Of Deal For Rasmus Hojlund Inter Milan could offer defender Yann Bisseck to Man United as part of a deal for striker Rasmus Hojlund. This according to today's print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews. Inter Milan have made Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund a major target in attack this summer. Advertisement Both Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa have left the club already. And then, Mehdi Taremi could also follow them out the door. What this means is that Inter will need to make at least one big attacking this summer. The priority will clearly be to focus on a younger profile rather than signing another veteran. Tuttosport report that, should Taremi leave, then Inter will sign two strikers. And in that case, the newspaper anticipate, Ange-Yoan Bonny would be another major target. Inter Could Offer Bisseck + Cash To Man United For Hojlund MILAN, ITALY – MAY 06: Yann Aurel Bisseck of FC Internazionale celebrates after his team's victory in the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Semi Final Second Leg match between FC Internazionale Milano and FC Barcelona at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium on May 06, 2025 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by) But according to Tuttosport, it is Rasmus Hojlund who Inter really see as the priority. Advertisement However, there will be the matter of convincing the Red Devils on a deal. Even though Hojlund has struggled at Old Trafford, the fee that they paid for the Dane means they won't let him go for cheap. According to Tuttosport, Inter's idea would be to sign Hojlund on an initial loan deal. Then, this would contain a purchase option, potentially becoming an obligation under certain conditions. And the newspaper further anticipate that Inter could lower the cash fee by offering a player going the other way. Therefore, reports Tuttosport, Inter could offer the German as part of a deal for Hojlund.
