Former WP Rugby president gets 10-year suspension
He had been charged with misconduct following various statements made in communications to SA Rugby members and in public forums in 2022 and 2024.
In upholding the sanction, Marais was suspended for 10 years from any and all positions in the South African Rugby Union (SARU), or any other rugby body, and from any and all rugby activities for breaching the SARU Code of Conduct.
The Panel said it, and the Judicial Officer, had taken into account 'the total lack of remorse on the part of the appellant (Zelt Marais), which continued right up to the appeal, his ongoing justification for his actions and in effect still claiming that he was fully entitled to say what he had said on the basis that that what had been stated was 'the truth'.
'There had been no apology for his conduct, and in particular no public apology for his public remarks. There was ongoing lack of remorse and every possibility that he would continue along this path unless sanctioned in the manner in which the Judicial Officer decided to sanction his conduct.'
The Independent Appeal Panel's 61-page finding held that the sanction imposed by the Judicial Officer was 'well motivated, among other things for the gravity of the charges, the fact that the acts of misconduct were ongoing, by a very senior office bearer of a member union who was well aware of his duties and responsibilities towards SARU.'

Woman attempts suicide as loan shark increases interest to 400%
A woman attempted suicide in KwaZulu-Natal, Phoenix on Monday, 11 August 2025, after a loan shark unexpectedly increased the interest rate. Initially, the interest rate was 50%; however, the loan shark increased it to 400%. They demanded R100 000 in payback for a R20 000 loan. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the woman's family mentioned that the loan shark changed the interest rate to 400% after seeing that the debt was almost settled. After the woman resisted paying the high interest, the loan shark threatened to send a group of men to repossess her car if the money was not paid. Feeling scared, the woman borrowed smaller amounts of money to pay the loan shark as he continued making demands. The woman called family members and informed them that she intended to jump off a bridge because she had become overwhelmed with debt. She then requested her family to take care of her child. RUSA Spokesperson Prem Balram said that they informed the family about the next steps they need to take to get help for the woman. A suspect was arrested in Verulam, KZN on Tuesday, 12 August 2025, after attacking a family with a knife. The 36-year-old male suspect entered a property on Aslaam Road in Riyadh with intentions to rob the residence. Two family members were having tea in their yard when they suddenly noticed the suspect approaching them. 'The 78-year-old woman and her male domestic worker fled into the house, followed by the suspect. The robber produced a knife and attempted to steal the metal payer statue, but was confronted by a 54-year-old male who exited the bedroom. He stabbed the victim on his hand and fled empty-handed,' said RUSA. The suspect was later caught on Russom Street. DA probes NSFAS student accommodation review
The Democratic Alliance (DA) demands transparency from the NSFAS concerning its investigations into student accommodation management and such collaborations. Matlhodi Maseko, the DA Spokesperson for Education and Training questioned the validity of the legal review, concerned that this move might be a 'stalling tactic' by NSFAS. In a statement on Maseko claimed that NSFAS has failed to be transparent on several points surrounding its legal review. These are: in-depth information on what exactly is under review, timelines of the legal review process, confirming the dissemination of findings to students, higher education institutions and the public at large. NSFAS announced late last week that its student accommodation management process was undergoing legal review. The Scheme, however did not expand much on the details of the review. NSFAS reportedly said the outcomes of the review would be implemented to 'enhance transparency, integrity and efficiency in its payment processes.' The scheme indicated that all student accommodation payments are made following the conclusion of verification and validation processes. 'Non-payment may result from claims that are not funded, claims lacking confirmation from relevant institutions, or cases where registration data was not received before the payment deadline,' said the NSFAS statement. Maseko said while the DA welcomes such reviews it's far too late, especially since students have to endure evictions, unsafe living conditions and academic disruptions resulting from delayed or non-payment of fees for student accommodation by NSFAS. 'If this process is genuine and not simply a stalling tactic, NSFAS should have no hesitation in committing to full openness and accountability. 'Students cannot continue to bear the cost of NSFAS's mismanagement. Public funds must be used to secure safe, quality student housing and not vanish into dysfunctional systems and incoherent processes, added Maseko. NFSAS was vague on when its pending legal review will reach conclusion and if it plans on sharing its findings with the public.
