Neeraj Chopra praises Karnataka government for hosting international event
Scheduled at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday, the event is co-organised by Chopra and JSW Sports, and sanctioned by World Athletics and the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). It has been granted gold- level status by World Athletics, a recognition of its global relevance.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Chopra said, 'I would like to thank the Government of Karnataka, KOA and DYES for playing a key role in ensuring that the stadium meets international standards. Their efforts will create a world-class experience for athletes and fans. I am especially grateful to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and MLC Dr K Govindaraj for their support.'
Siddaramaiah said, 'We are proud that India's most successful Olympic athlete is bringing a world-class athletics event to our country. Karnataka is committed to supporting this sporting revolution, and we have assured Neeraj of our full backing.'
KOA president and MLC Dr K Govindaraj said they have worked closely with DYES to ensure that all preparations are on track. From the pitch to the stands, the upgrades are meant to deliver an international experience, he added.

Land acquisition for sports hub in final phase
Ahmedabad: With Gujarat aiming for the 2036 Olympics, work on the ambitious Sardar Patel Sports Enclave at Motera is moving forward rapidly. Spread across 650 acres around the Narendra Modi Stadium, the mega sports hub will be developed in two phases at a cost of Rs 5,050 crore. Officials said land acquisition was in its final stage. Of the 814 structures marked for removal in the designated zone, 665 have already been demolished. Residents displaced by the project are being offered alternative housing within 1–3 km of the site. The Ahmedabad collector's office is acquiring land from organisations such as the Bhartiya Seva Samaj, Sadashiv Pragya Mandal, and Sant Asaram Ashram. While talks for most plots are nearly complete, the issue of the Asaram Ashram land is currently sub judice. Of the 127 structures in Shivnagar, 90 have already been razed, while demolition of 17 structures in Vanazara Vas is pending. Work is simultaneously underway to clear a planned 24-metre-wide road, which requires removal of 378 structures — 283 of which have already been demolished. In addition, 292 structures have been cleared from the land earmarked for the proposed Aquatics Centre. The enclave will house world-class facilities in two phases: Package 1 (Rs 2,250 crore) will include development of an aquatics centre for which tenders will be floated in Nov, with a completion deadline of Nov 2028. Under package 2 (Rs 2,800 crore) construction of an indoor arena, tennis centre, National Institute of Sports Excellence, and housing for athletes will be included. Tenders for this will be issued in Dec, with completion targeted by Dec 2028. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by December 2028, aligning with India's Olympic bid timeline. Visa Delays Disrupt Indian Boxers' UK Training Before World Championships
Last Updated: Indian boxers' training trip to the UK for the World Championships faces visa issues. Only four women boxers and a few coaches have reached as the rest await clearances in Patiala. The Indian boxers' planned training trip to the UK ahead of the crucial World Championships has faced obstacles due to visa-related complications. The squad was scheduled to travel on Sunday to participate in a multinational training camp in Sheffield, an essential preparation for the World Championships in Liverpool from September 4 to 14. However, only four women boxers and a few coaching staff members have managed to secure visas and reach the UK. The 10-member men's team and six women boxers are still awaiting their clearances and remain at the national camp in NIS Patiala. Currently, the male boxers have only one coach available, as three others, including head coach Dharmendra Yadav, are already in Sheffield. 'Yes, the three of us have reached here but all the (male) boxers are still waiting for their visas," Yadav told PTI. 'We had to start sparring in the multinational camp from Wednesday but we cancelled it as we don't know when the visa will arrive and when the boxers will be able to reach here." The Interim Committee, which is managing the day-to-day affairs of the Boxing Federation of India, said it's in 'constant touch" with Indian Embassy in the UK, Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India 'to help expedite the visa process". 'However, as the process is largely automated, interventions so far have not been able to resolve the delays," committee member Col Arun Malik said. 'That said, we have received 3 more visas, and 12 members of our 31-member contingent, including 4 women boxers, have already reached England. 'On our part, all logistical arrangements are ready, and the moment we have clarity, we will ensure that the remaining players travel to England without delay. We remain hopeful that the pending cases will be resolved soon, enabling the entire team to join the camp at the earliest," he added. Which Boxers Have Managed To Reach UK? Those who have reached Sheffield include two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, Minakshi, Pooja Rani, and Nupur Sheoran. Meanwhile, Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, Commonwealth Games bronze-winner Jaismine Lamboria, and Asian Games medallist Narender Berwal, among others, are still in Patiala. 'Four (female) boxers have reached and 2 coaches are there in the UK. I have received my visa but I stayed back for the BFI elections," said women's head coach D Chandralal, who is a representative of the Kerala boxing state unit for the August 21 BFI elections. 'But I have given the plan to the coaches there and they will conduct training according to that. They have some sparring sessions scheduled. In the meantime after the elections I'll stay with the rest of the boxers," he added. Sheffield, home to the Great Britain Boxing headquarters, is one of the sport's most prominent training hubs. The multinational camp, running from August 17 to September 1, features teams from Ireland, France, Germany, Uzbekistan, the USA, and Poland, among others. This edition of the World Championships will be the first to be held under the aegis of the new governing body, World Boxing. It will feature competitions across 10 weight classes for both men and women, and, for the first time, male and female boxers will compete in Olympic-style events at the same championship. Manu Bhaker wins 10m air pistol bronze at Asian Championship
India's double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker won the bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol competition of the Asian Shooting Championship here on Tuesday. China's Qianke Ma claimed the gold medal with 243.2 after pipping Korean Jiin Yang who settled for the silver with 241.6. The 23-year-old Bhaker entered the final after finishing third in the qualifications with a score of 583. Korea's Yejin Oh topped the qualifications with 585 but she was participating for ranking points only, leaving Chinese Qianxun Yao to make the final as the top-ranked shooter. Esha Singh, who was also taking part in the event for ranking points only, was ninth with 577 while Suruchi Singh was placed 12th with 574. Palak ended in 17th place with 573, while Surbhi Rao (RPO) was 25th with 570. The trio of Bhaker, Suruchi Singh and Palak finished third in the team event with a total score of 1730.
