Paul Ready: ‘ I wanted to be a tennis player – but I was crap'
My parents' mantra was 'do what makes you happy if you can'. They didn't push my three siblings and me to be academic. Our home was beautifully relaxed. Behaving well and being nice was drilled into us. And we could throw a party and they would stay out of the way.
During a play at the Royal Court, my brain mistook the adrenaline going through my body for panic and I had serious stage fright. Now I do breathing exercises and tell myself there are times we need adrenaline to be ready and alert. It's nothing to be afraid of.
From the age of seven until 15, I wanted to be a tennis player – but I was crap. What I was missing was someone knowledgable telling me how to improve. In youth theatre, self-discipline was encouraged and our teacher told us what we needed to know about becoming an actor.
Drama school taught me to take an interest in life when you're not working. Watch what's happening in the world, read history, read psychology. Bring that understanding to your roles.
My wife [actor Michelle Terry] and I respect what the other does. Her brain is a superpower. She has fast, extroverted thinking, whereas I'm an introverted thinker. Once we figured out the difference, I wasn't as intimidated by her process, and she wasn't as confused by mine.
I'm in denial, but I probably am like Kevin [Ready's hapless character in Motherland]. On holiday with my family in Center Parcs I got caught in the Wild Water Rapids and couldn't get up. A group of people was watching me struggle, saying, 'There's that guy from Motherland.'
Once, I was in a soft-play ball pit with my daughter when she was a toddler. This dad, with a slightly crazed look in his eye, held on to the netting next to me with both hands, looked in and said, 'I'm Kevin.' I had sympathy.
Skiing nearly killed me. It was my first time on a harder run. Within a matter of minutes I'd gone off-piste and ended up throwing myself to the ground, looking over a sheer drop. I'm 90% sure I wouldn't have survived the fall. I wasn't injured, but there was a lot of swearing.
My fear of ageing is more about life disappearing – but I find that valuable. The paradox is to be more present, more grateful – then it becomes a gift. I've taken loads for granted, but the older I get, the more precious life feels to me.
I opened the door to a small sauna in a hotel in Santa Monica and a very naked Harvey Keitel was there. I stood in the doorway like: 'Is this cool?' I was allowed to sit down. No conversation – I just let him stretch out. I'm unsure if I was starstruck or just struck.
'He bished, he bashed, he boshed.' That'll do for my headstone. I'd love my kid to remember me as a good dad, and to be remembered as a brilliant actor, but part of me is happy to be forgotten. Let's not worry about that.

Coronation Street character sacked as boss takes action
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Carl Webster and Kevin Webster (Jonathan Howard and Michael Le Vell) both recently made shocking discoveries about each other in Coronation Street. Kevin discovered that Carl has been using his garage as a base for stealing cars, in cahoots with a woman called Fiona. He tried to stop Fiona making off with a vehicle, but became unwell and Glenda (Jodie Prenger) had to take him to hospital. Kevin has been going through gruelling treatment for cancer, and of course the worry was that his collapse was related to his cancer. But when Carl got to the hospital and spoke to one of the doctors he was gobsmacked to learn that Kevin had been given the all-clear at his last appointment and is cancer free. Kevin has been letting his family think that he still has cancer, so Carl now had something on his brother that he could use to stop him telling the police about the stolen cars. The reason Kevin has been pretending to still have cancer is that he's secretly terrified that his wife Abi (Sally Carman) may be about to have an affair with Carl. His plan is that Abi won't leave him while she thinks he's still going through treatment, and he can use that time to make her fall in love with him again. In upcoming episodes Abi is angry with Carl for causing trouble with Kevin, and Carl has to bite his tongue to stop himself telling her about Kev's lies. But when Abi talks to Tyrone (Alan Halsall) about how to tell Kevin's son Jack (Kyran Bowes) that Kevin's treatment hasn't worked, Tyrone is forced to tell her that Kevin confessed to him a while ago that he's actually cancer-free. Abi is fuming and won't listen to Kevin's pleas that he only pretended about the cancer in order to save their marriage. It actually has the opposite effect and she goes straight off to find Carl, falling into his arms for a passionate kiss. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Fresh heartbreak for Debbie confirmed in Coronation Street as she makes a plea
2025 has not been the year Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) expected in Coronation Street. When she went to the doctor earlier this year after experiencing some troubling symptoms – forgetfulness, mood swings, blackouts – she expected to be told it was menopause-related. What she was told instead was devastating. Debbie has young-onset dementia, and her symptoms will gradually get worse. At first she tried to carry on as normal without telling anyone. Only her brother Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) knew about her diagnosis, and he found out by chance and agreed to keep her secret. But as Debbie found herself experiencing more worrying episodes she eventually came clean to her family. Generally she's been met with a lot of support and understanding, and she's reconciled with former partner Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) who she pushed away because she couldn't cope with the idea of him seeing her deteriorate. Aside from Ronnie, Debbie's main supporters have been her family and she's been especially happy to have Carl back in her life. Carl was largely brought up in Germany and didn't have much contact with Kevin (Michael Le Vell) over the years, although he and Debbie were a lot closer. She's been glad to have Carl around, as he's also been there to support Kevin who was undergoing cancer treatment. So when Debbie faces losing Carl from her life in upcoming episodes, she's not happy at all. Carl gets himself into hot water with Kevin when his brother (and boss) discovers that he's been running a stolen car scam from the garage. In return, Carl discovers that Kevin has been lying about his cancer treatment not working, when in fact he's been declared to be free of cancer following chemotherapy. It's a messy situation, and messier still when Abi (Sally Carman) hears about Kevin's lies from Tyrone (Alan Halsall). Kev pleads that he only made out he needed more cancer treatment because he was so scared that Abi was about to leave him for Carl and he wanted a way to make her stay. This has the effect of infuriating Abi so much that she feels disgusted with Kevin, knowing how he tried to manipulate her emotions and was prepared to let his kids think he still had cancer. With no job and with the complications of his feelings for Abi, Carl decides it might be best if he moves on. Debbie, however, isn't prepared to let her brother leave Weatherfield without trying to persuade him to stay. She doesn't know what her future is going to look like, but she wants her family around her as much as possible. View More » For Debbie's sake, will Carl agree to stay?
