Raids conducted on illegal overseas recruitment agencies at Melur in Madurai district
The Protector of Emigrants (POE), Chennai, in coordination with the Madurai police, conducted raids at multiple premises of illegal recruiting agencies operating in Melur in the district. Hundreds of passports were seized during the operation, and investigations are currently under way.
The action was initiated based on a tip-off regarding the presence of several unauthorised agencies in Melur. The area has one of the highest concentrations of illegal recruiting agencies in the State.
M. Rajkumar, POE for the regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, urged all individuals seeking employment abroad to exercise utmost caution. He emphasised the importance of securing overseas employment only through licensed recruitment agencies, which are authorised by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and only on valid work visas. He also advised those seeking jobs overseas to verify the credentials of recruitment agencies before making any financial commitments. A list of licensed recruitment agencies is available at emigrate.gov.in., he added.
Mr. Rajkumar also warned individuals or entities facilitating illegal emigration. 'It is a punishable offence under the Emigration Act, 1983, for any agency to send Indian citizens abroad without a valid recruitment license. Such agencies must immediately halt their activities and obtain the necessary authorisation. Strict action will be taken against all violators. Additional raids are planned in the region in the coming months.'
The Madurai police have also assured the POE that they will continue to conduct regular raids and take strict action against illegal recruitment agencies operating in the region.

9,000 undertrials released through Maharashtra's legal aid model: CM
1 2 Nagpur: Around 9,000 undertrial prisoners, nearly 45% of the 20,000 aided so far, were released through a pioneering legal aid initiative launched under chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in 2018. The first-of-its-kind model in the country, this effort has since been adopted by the central govt and is now being expanded nationwide with dedicated funding, a statement released by the govt says. Conceived as a response to the disproportionately high number of undertrials in Indian jails, the initiative focuses on providing structured legal assistance to inmates who often remain incarcerated due to lack of representation or inability to afford bail. As per the Prison Statistics India Report 2021, over 77% of inmates in India are undertrials, with an average jail occupancy rate of 130%. "This effort began with a clear objective, to deliver justice to those trapped in the system for no fault other than poverty or lack of support," said Fadnavis, highlighting the need for equity within the criminal justice framework. The project began with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Maharashtra govt and the Azim Premji Foundation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and National Law University, Delhi also partnered in operationalising the programme. Initially rolled out across eight major prisons — Nagpur, Arthur Road, Byculla, Kalyan, Taloja, Latur, Thane, and Pune — it involved the appointment of trained social work and legal fellows within jails and District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs). These professionals assist prisoners in preparing legal documents, understanding court procedures, and securing effective legal representation. The initiative has not only helped secure bail or case closure for thousands but has also strengthened the prison-based legal aid system and triggered policy-level reforms. With the success of the pilot phase, the state govt recently renewed its MoU with the Azim Premji Foundation. The next phase will focus on strengthening information systems, scaling legal clinics in prisons, and building institutional capacities to deliver justice more efficiently. Officials said that the initiative has become a national model for legal aid, demonstrating how administrative will and structured partnerships can transform access to justice for the most marginalised.

Mehul Choksi sues India in UK high court for ‘kidnapping him' in Antigua
Mehul Choksi LONDON: Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi is suing the Indian govt and five other people in the London high court for orchestrating what he refers to as his 'kidnapping' from Antigua in 2021 in an alleged honeytrap plot. Choksi has claimed in the preliminary hearing that five people working for R&AW kidnapped him in Antigua and smuggled him on a yacht to Dominica in a plot masterminded by the Indian state in order to extradite him to India to face charges in the Rs 13,500 Punjab National Bank scam. Antigua police named Gurdip Bath, Barbara Jarabik, Gurmit Singh, Gurjit Singh Bhandal and Leslie Farrow-Guy as the five suspects, mostly UK-based, in the kidnapping. They are all being sued by Choksi alongside the Indian govt. They all deny the charges. The court documents were served on the ministry of external affairs by the British high commission in New Delhi. Edward Fitzgerald KC, representing Choksi (66), told Justice Freedman on Monday that Choksi was filing a civil suit against the Indian govt for allegedly ordering Choksi to be kidnapped on May 21, 2021 and smuggled by yacht to Dominica. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? IC Markets Mendaftar Undo India denies any involvement, argues it is protected by state immunity and that the UK courts do not have jurisdiction for this case. Harish Salve KC, representing India's govt, said: 'There is no evidence of India having anything to do with the alleged events. The claimant's account is rife with non sequiturs and unsupported assumptions. Those accused seem a rather unlikely band of state-sponsored conspirators.' Choksi is currently in jail in Belgium where he is fighting extradition proceedings brought by India. Choksi first met Barbara Jarabik, a Hungarian luxury goods expert, in Antigua in Aug 2020. In May 2021 she is alleged to have asked him to visit the apartment she had rented in Jolly Harbour. A group of men of Indian origin burst into the apartment and told Choksi he was 'being detained to be interrogated by Indian agencies', Fitzgerald told the court, London's Times newspaper reported. Choksi alleges that the men told him they worked for R&AW and beat him up, left him unconscious, and tied him to a wheelchair on the yacht to Dominica to extort a false confession from him and implicate the Congress party. 'The evidence points inevitably to India being behind this — they had the motivation, they had the resources,' Fitzgerald told the court, the Daily Telegraph reported. Choksi denies the charges against him. Thenext hearing is expected in September.
