Assam Principal Folds National Flag With Legs, Arrested As Video Goes Viral

A school principal in Assam was arrested for "disrespecting" the national flag on Sunday, a day after a video of her folding the tricolour allegedly with the help of her legs went viral. The clip showed the principal, identified as Fatema Khatun, lowering the flag and pulling out the flagpole from the courtyard of the school. She was then seen placing the national flag on her feet in an attempt to fold it with the help of her knees. The video quickly went viral on social media. According to the police, the principal went to the school alone on Saturday morning and lowered the flag in an "objectionable manner". "She had hoisted the flag in the presence of students on August 15 (Independence Day), but on Saturday she came alone at around 7:30 am, opened the school gate, and lowered the flag, after locals in the area had criticised her for keeping the national flag hoisted on Friday night," the police said. The principal was arrested from Nagaon district under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. She has been sent to a 14-day judicial custody, officials said.

Farmers to lay siege to Bengaluru's Vidhana Soudha on August 20 over sugarcane dues, pricing issues

Bengaluru is set to witness a major farmers' protest on August 20, as members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers' Association announced plans to lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha, pressing the government to meet their long-pending demands, reported The Hindu. Bengaluru's Vidhana Soudha. Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru on Saturday, H. Bhagyaraj, president of the sugarcane growers' association, said farmers would also stage a 'satyagraha' at Freedom Park on the same day. Although the nation marked Independence Day on August 15, farmers had little to celebrate, Bhagyaraj remarked, accusing the government of failing to ensure scientific pricing for agricultural produce. He demanded that the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for the 2025-26 season be fixed at ₹4,500 per tonne, with harvesting and transportation costs borne by sugar factories. They insisted that factories should install weighing machines in open view so farmers could monitor the process themselves. The association further alleged that sugar mills owe farmers a staggering ₹950 crore in pending dues, and urged the government to clear these payments immediately. On the issue of fertiliser shortage, Bhagyaraj accused both the State and Centre of politicising the matter. He demanded that authorities ensure smooth supply and act strictly against traders who create artificial scarcity by hoarding stocks or selling them above the official price. Trump admin tightens citizenship rules, USCIS expands scope of ‘good moral character'

The Trump administration is indicating it will examine applications from legal immigrants seeking US citizenship more closely, as part of its latest move to restrict access to immigration benefits. The federal agency responsible for legal immigration, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, asked officers on Friday to consider additional factors when assessing whether immigrants applying for US citizenship possess a 'good moral character," according to a report by CBS News. A USCIS notification states that, 'One of the requirements for naturalisation is good moral character (GMC). An applicant for naturalisation must show that he or she has been, and continues to be, a person of good moral character.' The notice further added, 'In general, the applicant must show GMC during the five-year period immediately preceding his or her application for naturalisation and up to the time of the Oath of Allegiance. Conduct prior to the five-year period may also impact whether the applicant meets the requirement.' Reflecting "a good moral character" has always been a key requirement for US citizenship, in addition to passing English and civics tests. Earlier, the "good moral character" assessment typically consisted of an applicant who did not have any record of criminal offences or disqualifying conduct specified in US laws. It included crimes such as murder, aggravated felonies, drug offences and being a habitual drunkard. However, USCIS's policy issued Friday widened the scope of 'good moral character.' The agency stated that it must involve "more than a cursory mechanical review focused on the absence of wrongdoing." The officers have been asked to conduct a 'holistic assessment of an alien's behaviour, adherence to societal norms, and positive contributions that affirmatively demonstrate good moral character.' Applicants will be given "greater emphasis" based on "positive attributes and contributions," such as community involvement, family caregiving and ties, educational achievement, "stable and lawful" employment, duration of residence in the US, and tax payment history. The new USCIS policy instructs officers to consider factors that indicate an applicant's rehabilitation after wrongdoing, such as adherence to probation, paying overdue taxes or child support, and receiving community support letters.
