Kota Kinabalu: The expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST) set to be implemented in July, introduction of a targeted subsidy mechanism for RON95 petrol and the federal government's plan to implement a carbon tax by 2026, are reasons enough for the federal government to immediately implement Sabah's constitutional right to a 40pc net revenue return, without further excuses or delays. Star Tg Aru Division chief Hiew Choon Yu said according to the latest projection by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), Sabah's tax revenue is expected to reach RM6.2 billion in 2025—a historic high that clearly demonstrates Sabah's major contribution to the national economy and tax system.

'Meanwhile, the taxes collected from Sabah by the federal government each year are grossly disproportionate to the allocations returned to the state. 'Under Articles 112C and 112D of the Federal Constitution, Sabah is entitled to 40pc of net federal revenue collected from the state. However, this constitutional guarantee has never been truly enforced since 1969,' he said. He added that since 1974, Sabah's 40pc net tax revenue return has never been comprehensively reviewed or reassessed. Despite repeated government promises to review it, there has been no concrete progress.

SINGAPORE: Goh Cheng Liang, founder of Wuthelam Group and Singapore's richest person, died today at the age of 98, his family said, according to a report published in The Straits Times today. According to Forbes' 2025 ranking of the world's billionaires, Goh topped the list for Singapore with an estimated net worth of US$13 billion (RM55 billion). Advertisement He held a majority stake in Japan's Nippon Paint Holdings, which he helped build into a global coatings powerhouse. Born in 1927, he grew up in a rented shophouse room in River Valley and was sent to Johor during World War II, where he helped sell fishing nets. In 1949, he bought surplus paint from a British army auction and began making his own Pigeon Brand paints using a Chinese dictionary to decipher chemical names. His business boomed during the Korean War when imports were restricted. He later became Nippon Paint's distributor in Singapore and founded Wuthelam Holdings in 1974, building it into a multinational company with nearly 60 per cent of Nippon Paint. Goh's other ventures included developing and later selling the former Liang Court mall and Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Known for avoiding publicity, he told The Business Times in 1997 that he preferred private companies to public ones. Through the Goh Foundation, he funded cancer research, treatment facilities and scholarships, and supported welfare agencies in Singapore as well as roads, schools and sanitation systems in Chaozhou, China. A cancer survivor himself, he also backed the Goh Cheng Liang Proton Therapy Centre at the National Cancer Centre Singapore. Russia makes sudden advance in Ukraine before Trump-Putin summit, maps show

Russian Defence Ministry/Handout via REUTERS MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian forces have made a sudden thrust into eastern Ukraine near the coal mining town of Dobropillia, a move that may be designed to increase the pressure on Kyiv to cede land as the U.S. and Russian presidents prepare to meet. Ukraine's authoritative DeepState war map showed on Tuesday that Russian forces had advanced by at least 10 km (six miles) north in two prongs in recent days, part of their drive to take full control of Ukraine's Donetsk region. The advance is one of the most dramatic in the last year. DeepState said the Russians had surged forward near three villages on a section of the frontline associated with the Ukrainian towns of Kostyantynivka and Pokrovsk, which Moscow is trying to encircle, exploiting Kyiv's lack of manpower. "The situation is quite chaotic, as the enemy, having found gaps in the defence, is infiltrating deeper, trying to quickly consolidate and accumulate forces for further advancement," DeepState said on its Telegram channel. U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss a possible deal to end the war in Ukraine when they meet in Alaska on Friday. Unconfirmed media reports say Putin has told Trump he wants Ukraine to hand over the part of the Donetsk region that Russia does not control. There was no immediate comment on the advance from Moscow. Ukrainian military spokesperson Viktor Trehubov said only small groups were penetrating defensive lines, and that this did not amount to a breakthrough. Pasi Paroinen, a military analyst with the Finland-based Black Bird Group, said the situation had escalated rapidly, with Russian forces infiltrating past Ukrainian lines to a depth of roughly 17 km (10 miles) during the past three days. "Forwardmost Russian units have reportedly reached the Dobropillia – Kramatorsk road T0514 and Russian infiltration groups have also been reported near Dobropillia proper," he wrote on X. RUSSIA MAY GAIN LEVERAGE FOR TRUMP TALKS Tatarigami_UA, a former Ukrainian army officer whose Frontelligence Insight analysis tracks the conflict, posted: "In both 2014 and 2015, Russia launched major offensives ahead of negotiations to gain leverage. The current situation is serious, but far from the collapse some suggest." Sergei Markov, a former Kremlin adviser, said the Russians had been able to advance due to "a partial collapse in the front" due to Ukraine's shortage of soldiers. Ukraine has redeployed elite forces to try to thwart the advance, Russia's Interfax news agency and Ukrainian war bloggers reported. "This breakthrough is like a gift to Putin and Trump during the negotiations," Markov said, suggesting it could increase pressure on Kyiv to cede some land to prevent the Russian army eventually taking the rest of Donetsk by force. To do that, though, Russian forces would first need to take control of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka and Kostiantynivka - four places Russian military analysts call "fortress cities". Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has publicly pushed back against the idea of ceding territory to Russia, saying any peace deal must be a just one. Bohdan Krotevych, former chief of staff of Ukraine's Azov brigade and a National Guard lieutenant colonel, took to X late on Monday to warn Zelenskiy of the threat, saying the frontline in the area was "a complete mess". Sabah MACC nabs duo over RM3.6 million false claims

Investigations found the claims, made in 2022 and 2023 to the Department of Industrial Development and Research, involved the supply of a retort machine and equipment worth over RM400,000, and certification services including MeSTI, My Food, and Halal certificates worth over RM3.2 million. Advertisement Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests, saying the case is being investigated under Sections 18 and 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act 2009.
