Launched in May 2023, UDSP was created with the vision to serve as a unified surveillance system for the state, covering 12 notifiable diseases and has been operational at scale since then. Current effort aims to provide live, accurate and reliable data collection to contain outbreaks swiftly.

NHM director, Dr Pinky Jowel IAS, said, "Bringing VPD surveillance onto UDSP will strengthen our understanding of vaccine-preventable diseases and help plan future actions better." State surveillance officer, Dr Vikasendu Agarwal, said real-time data will help in fortifying the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Parliament New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) Over 1.11 crore and 64 lakhs people respectively have been diagnosed for hypertension and diabetes under the central health programme in the last six months till June this year, the government told Rajya Sabha today. The identified patients are being treated for their conditions, Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. 'Health is a state subject. However, Union Health Ministry provides technical and financial support to States and Union Territories across the country under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) as part of the National Health Mission (NHM). 'The Programme focuses on strengthening infrastructure, human resource development, screening, early diagnosis, referral, treatment, and health promotion for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) including hypertension and diabetes as per need and proposal from the State and UTs. 'Under the programme, 770 District NCD Clinics, 233 Cardiac Care Units and 6,410 NCD clinics at Community Health Centres have been set up,' said the Minister. He further said 'counselors at District NCD clinics provide focused lifestyle and risk factor counseling to patients and their family members. They also plan and implement IEC activities related to NCDs prevention and management. Medical Officers and Staff nurses provide lifestyle advice and reinforce health messages during patient visits at health facilities.' Over 1.11 cr BP, 64 lakh diabetes cases diagnosed and under treatment from Jan to June: Govt
New Delhi: More than 1.11 crore hypertension or blood pressure, and 64 lakh diabetes cases were diagnosed and are actively under treatment from January to June, the government informed on Tuesday. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, shared that nationwide screening and treatment for individuals aged 30+ has been implemented under the National Health Mission (NHM) as a part of Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC). "A total of 1,11,83,850 cases of hypertension have been diagnosed and under treatment between January and June, while 64,11,051 cases of diabetes have been diagnosed and under treatment during the same period,' the Minister said. The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) is a key component of CPHC. 'The Programme focuses on strengthening infrastructure, human resource development, screening, early diagnosis, referral, treatment, and health promotion for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including hypertension and diabetes, as per need and proposal from the State and Union Territories. Under the programme, 770 District NCD Clinics, 233 Cardiac Care Units and 6,410 NCD clinics at Community Health Centres have been set up,' Jadhav said. 'Patients diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes under the NP-NCD programme are provided free access to medicines and regular follow-up services at different levels of health facilities,' he added. While essential drugs for hypertension are available at all levels of care -- Ayushman Arogya Mandir (AAM), Primary Health Centres (PHCs), and Community Health Centers (CHCs). Further, monthly follow-ups are also facilitated through the NCD portal, with scheduled visits recorded and medicines dispensed accordingly, and referral mechanisms are in place for patients needing specialised care. Separately, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched a nationwide NCD screening campaign, including hypertension and diabetes, between February and March to achieve universal screening of individuals aged 30 years and above, the MoS said.

Out of 6 cr people screened in 17 states, Sickle Cell Disease found in 2.16 lakh: JP Nadda in LS
New Delhi: Union Health Minister J P Nadda informed the Lok Sabha on Friday that 6.04 crore people in the 17 identified tribal-dominated states, including Maharashtra, have been screened for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) till July 28, out of which 2,16,118 have been confirmed as diseased. Replying to a question, the health minister said the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Madhya Pradesh on July 1, 2023 to eliminate SCD. The objectives of the mission are provision of affordable, accessible and quality care to all SCD patients, reduction in the prevalence of the disease through awareness creation, targeted screening of seven crore people till 2025-26 in the age group of 0-40 years in the affected districts of tribal areas and counselling through collaborative efforts of central ministries and state governments, he said. Screenings are conducted under NSCAEM at all health facilities from district hospitals up to Ayushman Arogya Mandir (AAM) level, Nadda said, adding, "As on 28.07.2025, a total of 6,04,50,683 population in the 17 identified tribal dominated states including Maharashtra have been screened, out of which 2,16,118 have been confirmed as diseased." Patients living with SCD are provided with services and facilities to improve their quality of life through AAMs, which include follow-up of individuals with the disease at frequent intervals, counselling regarding lifestyle management, pre-marriage and pre-natal decisions, nutritional supplementation support through the distribution of folic acid tablets, and management of crisis symptoms, as well as referral to higher-level facilities. As of July 28, 2,62,67,997 genetic counselling ID cards have been distributed in the country, Nadda said. Hydroxyurea has been included in the National Health Mission (NHM) Essential Drugs List at Sub-Health Centres, Primary Health Centres (PHC), Urban PHC, Community Health Centres (CHC) and District Hospitals to address the issue of access to medicine, the minister said. Under NHM, financial support is provided for the procurement of Hydroxyurea, to reduce the out-of-pocket expenditure borne by sickle cell anaemia patients. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has issued guidelines for cost norms for the establishment of centres of excellence (CoE) on SCD funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) in various states. To date, 15 CoEs have been approved in the country by MoTA, Nadda informed. Through MoTA, awareness and counselling material have been developed and disseminated to the states and Union Territories (UTs). Through monthly Ayushman Arogya Shivirs, awareness is raised for various health programmes including SCD. The ministry provides technical and financial support to the states and UTs for conducting screenings and procurement of drugs for sickle cell anaemia, based on the proposals received in the form of programme implementation plans (PIPs) under NHM.
