Vinayak Samant named Bihar head coach for next season
Vinayak Samant
will be the head coach of Bihar for the upcoming domestic season. This news comes in light of 14-year-old
Vaibhav Suryavanshi
's exploits in IPL 2025. Samant was Mumbai's head coach for two seasons, from 2018 to 2020. He was also the fielding coach at the Assam Cricket Association's cricket academy in the 2023-24 season.
The former stumper, who played 101 first-class matches for Mumbai and Tripura before retiring in 2011, was known as a gutsy cricketer. Samant coached the Mumbai Under-23 team to the Col CK Nayudu Trophy title in the 2023-24 season and is currently the batting coach of Belgium, which is playing in the European League.
"Yes, I've joined Bihar as their head coach. I'm looking forward to working with some exciting talent there and contributing to the development of
Bihar cricket
," Samant told Mumbai Mirror from Brussels. Commenting on the chance to coach Suryavanshi, who smashed a sensational 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Samant said, "He's a phenomenal talent, as we all saw in the IPL.
He's too young at the moment, and I don't want to curb his natural game, but yes, I'll be looking to guide him in making minor adjustments in improving his red-ball match, so that he can perform well in the
Ranji Trophy
too," the 52-year-old said.
Samant was appointed for the job by former Mumbai cricketer and selector Anand Yalvigi, who is currently the Director — Game Development & Operations of the
Bihar Cricket Association
.
"When I was appointed as the director of the BCA, I wanted a coach who has worked at different levels. Vinayak has worked at the grassroots level and also with the state teams. He has himself come through the grassroots. Most importantly, he was the head coach of the Mumbai team, which is a big credential. He's somebody who played 101 first-class matches, so he has tremendous experience. Also, I've played with Vinayak since my childhood. So, I'm aware of his brilliant commitment and dedication levels. He will help Bihar to develop their cricket in the coming season," said Yalvigi.
"The face of Bihar cricket is changing. We want to involve the best of coaches and selectors to hone the emerging talent of Bihar. As part of this process, we are getting new people on board for Bihar cricket," said Bihar Cricket Association President Rakesh Tiwary from Patna.
Samant will be making his maiden trip to Patna in Bihar later this month, as the BCA plans to launch its inaugural
T20 league
next month. "I could never go to Bihar as a player, so this will be a new experience for me," he said.

R Ashwin reacts to CSK's statement on Dewald Brevis signing: ‘Clarification came because a lot of people had doubts'
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is a vital cog in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), issued a clarification after his comments on Dewald Brevis' acquisition by the franchise caused quite a stir on social media. The five-time champions posted an official statement after Ashwin alleged that the franchise paid an 'extra" amount to the South Africa batter, who had a base price of INR 75 lakh in the mega auction. Brevis wasn't picked up in the mega auction. However, he was signed by CSK as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh in the 2025 season. Dewald Brevis was signed by CSK as injury replacement for INR 2.20 crore. (AFP) Following Ashwin's comments and the reaction to them on social media, CSK said that the due procedure was followed, and Brevis was signed keeping all rules and regulations in mind. CSK signed Gurjapneet for INR 2.20 crore, and the same amount was paid to Brevis once the pacer was ruled out of the IPL 2025 season. Ashwin has finally issued a clarification regarding his comments, saying he never spoke about any wrongdoing and just stated facts. However, his remarks were taken out of proportion, and something else was misconstrued. 'I just want to say this. I focus more on cricket rather than the chatter on social media. We make videos on YouTube to give our opinions. People who watch our videos, don't do any wrongdoing. However, those who don't watch can twist the statements according to their whims and fancies. In today's world, news can be made based on one statement or headline,' Ashwin said his channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. Also Read: Dewald Brevis leaves Markram speechless, youngster slams record-breaking T20I fifty 'The way Brevis is batting, CSK has struck gold. The decision to bring him on board is very good. The franchise has struck gold during the purple patch of Dewald Brevis. He has been batting really well; he hits big sixes. Power-striker, monstrous hitter against spin,' he added. Ashwin's reaction to CSK statement Reacting to CSK's official statement, Ashwin said that the franchise clarified the situation because many people had doubts about Brevis's signing price of INR 2.20 crore. 'In today's time, there is a need to clarify the right things as well. There is no mistake by anyone; clarification on this matter has arisen from the fact that a lot of people have doubts. The fact is that no mistake has been made by the franchise, the player and the governing body,' said Ashwin. 'One must understand that when a franchise wants a player, they talk to the latter and their agent. The franchise then tells the BCCI about a player getting injured and a replacement player coming in. If there is anything wrong in the process, that player would not play for the franchise,' he added. Brevis has been in the form of his life of late. The right-handed batter, aged 22, slammed his maiden T20I century against Australia in the second match of the three-game series. In the third T20I, he backed it up with a half-century. 'My intent in the old video was to talk about Brevis' batting, not about his IPL signing amount. We have to understand that every player who plays in the IPL has a contract with the franchise and the tournament. The franchise and the IPL have a binding contract. If there is anything wrong, it won't be ratified,' said Ashwin. 'Injury replacements are very common in the IPL. It is about how you go about the rule flexibility. That is the point. If you are a CSK and South Africa fan, then it is time to be extremely excited about Brevis. He is a special talent,' he added.

RCB star Yash Dayal banned from participating in UP T20 League due to sexual harassment and rape allegations
The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has banned under-fire pacer Yash Dayal from featuring in the UP T20 League. The decision was taken after the pacer found himself in controversy, due to sexual harassment allegations. He is also facing rape charges in Ghaziabad and Jaipur. Yash Dayal in action for RCB.(PTI) Dayal is facing sexual exploitation charges in Ghaziabad, under the pretext of marriage and has also been given protection from arrest by the Allahabad High Court. But the Jaipur High Court has refused to grant him protection from arrest, due to the involvement of a minor in the case. The RCB star could also be arrested, and his next hearing is set to take place on August 22. Which team was Yash Dayal supposed to play for? The 27-year-old was expected to play for Gorakhpur Lions in the UP T20 League and was purchased for ₹7 lakh. He has been one of the best pacers in the country lately, especially after helping RCB to the IPL 2025 title. In the Jaipur case, which involves a minor, the victim accused the player of repeatedly raping her for over two years. He also allegedly emotionally blackmailed her with promises of a cricketing career. She first came into contact with Dayal, when she was a minor, only 17 years old, and it was during an IPL game in Jaipur. He allegedly invited her to a hotel with the pretext of giving cricket advice, and that's when the first sexual assault took place. According to the victim, it continued for two years. Regarding the Jaipur case, station officer Anil Jaiman told PTI, 'FIR was registered against Yash Dayal for rape under relevant sections of POCSO [Protection of Children from Sexual Offences] Act and the BNS [Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita].' Dayal made his IPL debut in the 2022 season, when GT bought him for ₹3.2 crores.

R Ashwin Fumingly Reacts On CSKs Statement Amidst Dewald Brevis Controversy Says, If Something Is Wrong...
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his thoughts on Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) mid-season acquisition of Dewald Brevis during IPL 2025. Ashwin, aged 38, emphasized that no one was to blame for the situation, pointing out that injury replacements have consistently been a part of the IPL. He explained that all teams are utilizing the flexibility offered by the league's injury replacement rules. On August 16, CSK released an official statement asserting that the franchise followed fair process in signing the hard-hitting South African batter. Addressing the controversy on his YouTube channel "Ash ki Baat," Ashwin remarked: 'We live in such times where we have to clarify even true stories. In that way, it is a bit tricky. But I won't go there. There is no one at fault here. The clarification here on this matter has arisen from the fact that a lot of people have doubts. The point is the player is not at fault, the franchise is not at fault, and maybe the governing body is also not at fault. All of us need to understand that if a franchise needs a player, the franchise talks to the player or the player's agent and tells the BCCI, 'Look, so-and-so player of ours is injured, we need another player. ' The matter gets closed there.' ALSO READ - Not MI, Hardik Pandya Was All Set To Make His IPL Debut In 2012 For This Team, But This Coach Denied It 'The IPL or those who need to give approval give the approval, and the player comes and plays. If there was any fault here, that player would not have played in the franchise. This is not about Brevis; it is generally the case. There is one other thing I want to explain. My intention in the video was to describe how well Brevis was batting. We have to understand that every player who plays in the IPL has a tri-parted contract: The player, franchise, and the IPL have a binding contract," he added. Ashwin Tells Past Instances 'So if something is wrong with it, it won't get ratified. That is why, probably, the tweet that said clause so-and-so makes complete sense. The flexibility that is there with the IPL's injury replacement, everyone is making use of it. It is not only CSK who have picked a replacement; there have been several other teams. RCB have taken Chris Gayle in the past, and he became a superstar. Injury replacements are a common facet of the IPL, and even in that, the rule flexibility that you have, how you make use of that, within the limit, you can use it. That is the point," added the veteran spinner. Ashwin On Brevis Ashwin also highlighted Brevis' recent performances with the bat against Australia, suggesting both South Africa and CSK fans have reason to be thrilled. He believes that Brevis is the sort of player capable of leading his teams to victory in major competitions: 'If you are a South Africa fan or a CSK fan, it is time to be absolutely excited for Dewald Brevis. Dewald Brevis is a special talent, there is no doubt about it. I think he is going to have some fabulous performances and he is going to be in some teams that will go on to win some competitions," Ashwin said. Praising Brevis for his exploits against Australia, Ashwin described how CSK had made a shrewd move by signing the batter while he was in peak form. He also hinted that South Africa could be a strong contender at the T20 World Cup in the subcontinent in 2026. Brevis stood out as the top run-scorer in the three-match T20I series against Australia, amassing 180 runs at a strike rate of 204.55, including 13 fours and 14 sixes. Despite the heroics SA Lost the series 2-1 on the backs of Tim David's Power Hitting & Glenn Maxwell's Clutch knock in third T20I.
