Jonquel Jones returns to the Liberty lineup, leads team scoring in win over Fever

NBC Sports4 days ago
NEW YORK — During the Liberty's lineup announcement Tuesday night, one name brought the Barclays Center crowd to its feet: Jonquel Jones. She held up a heart to the crowd.
In the words of head coach Sandy Brondello — 'It's a happy day. JJ's back.'
The Liberty star center officially returned to the court in New York's 98-84 win over the Fever on Tuesday night. Jones, last season's WNBA Finals MVP, was playing for the first time since June 19 with an ankle injury and scored a team-high 18 points.
'It felt great to be back out there,' Jones said after the game. 'Obviously, it's been a while since I've been on the court, but my teammates have held it down while I was out, and everybody was excited for me to be back in. And I was just as excited.'
Jones, the Liberty's third-highest scorer, has averaged 12.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists this season, while shooting 43.8 percent from behind the arc. New York struggled in her absence, going 5-4 after starting out the season 9-0. They are undefeated with Jones on the court.
It's been a touch-and-go season for Jones so far. She'd been limited to just 10 games this season, initially injuring her ankle in early June and taking a brief absence before returning and aggravating the injury.

New York Giants' Bryce Ford-Wheaton carted off after suffering ugly leg injury

The New York Giants have stiff competition at wide receiver in training camp, with multiple players vying for one or two spots at the backend of the depth chart. Among them is prized special teamer, Bryce Ford-Wheaton, who has dealt with several injuries throughout his young career. Misfortune again found Ford-Wheaton on Sunday when the receiver went down in serious pain during drills. He attempted to walk off the field but collapsed and slammed his helmet into the ground in frustration. The cart was called out for Ford-Wheaton as he was surrounded by teammates. More to come... Mets' trade cost for Luis Robert Jr. revealed; White Sox want 1 specific star in return

The New York Mets have been linked to Luis Robert Jr. all season. The Chicago White Sox's five-tool centerfielder would solve a big issue for the Mets. Finally, just days before the trade deadline, there is clarity on what it would take to get a deal done. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the White Sox would only trade Robert to the Cubs if Mark Vientos comes in return. Vientos is a talented third baseman who has been a bit erratic at the plate this season. He could certainly still be a part of the Mets' future plans. But on the other hand, the Mets have other young options who can play third base, including Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio. They're in a solid position to give up Vientos. MORE: Emmanuel Clase just had one of the weirdest days in MLB history If that's what it takes to get Robert, the Mets should do it. Robert isn't on an expiring contract. He has a pair of team options that mean he can be New York's centerfield answer for the next couple of seasons, too. You've got to give some to get some, and this is a fair asking price and a deal that could work out for both sides. While they haven't shaken up the roster much, they have made a couple of key additions. Both Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele were signed in NBA free agency. They will both be asked to handle key roles off of the bench. In addition to the two impactful outside roster moves, the Knicks made a change on the sideline. Tom Thibodeau was fired after New York was defeated by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. To replace him, the team brought in Mike Brown. Brown will bring a different philosophy to the team. Read more: Where Could LeBron James Go Next? He is still available on the free agency market and the Knicks have been connected as a possible suitor. CBS Sports analyst Sam Quinn took a look at the top remaining free agents and their best fit. When it came to Simmons, he stated his belief that New York was the top potential landing spot. "How about the Knicks? The key to maximizing Simmons will be surrounding him with shooting. The Knicks have a shooting big man in Karl-Anthony Towns. The reserves they added this offseason, Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele, can both shoot. Perhaps New York could lean on Simmons as a creator when Jalen Brunson goes to the bench," Quinn wrote. "He gives them yet another big wing to deploy defensively, and if they want to switch as much as they did in the later stages of the postseason, Simmons can do so. The pressure of Madison Square Garden is a potential issue, but we're talking about a 10-15-minute reserve here, not a star. It's a low-risk, high-reward gamble." He has had some injury issues in recent years, but his confidence took a major hit with the Philadelphia 76ers as well. Last season, Simmons played in 51 games and made 24 starts between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. He averaged five points per game to go along with 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds. While Simmons may not be a star, he could end up being a great pickup for the Knicks' second unit should they choose to pursue him.
