Driver in preschool bus crash to be charged today

SERDANG: The bus driver in the crash involving a Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (Pasti) tour bus, which collided with a tree along Jalan Persiaran near Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), is expected to be charged today.
Serdang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the investigation paper had been referred to the deputy public prosecutor's Office yesterday.
"Instructions have been given to charge the case under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
"The bus driver will be charged at the Petaling Jaya Court tomorrow (today)," he said in a statement last night.
Last Friday, a tour bus driven by the 44-year-old man, carrying five accompanying teachers and 30 students, skidded and crashed into a tree at UPM.

Magistrate Saiful Sayoti made the decision after the court was told the prosecution had yet to get a reply on the representation filed by the defence. Lawyer for the accused Johan Radzi told this to reporters when met outside the court as the proceedings were heard in camera. The accused claimed trial when charged on April 22, with committing the offence at the Taman Matahari junction along Jalan Persiaran Senawang 1 near here around 8.30pm on March 6. He was charged with causing the deaths of Muhammad Aidil Ramdan Abdullah, 15, Muhammad Aswari Lotpi, 16 and Aisar Azim Abdullah, 17. The charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 carries a jail term of between five and 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000 upon conviction. The accused had also claimed trial to another charge of driving without a valid license. He was charged under Section 26(1) of the same Act, which carries a fine of between RM300 and RM2,000 or imprisonment of up to three months or both upon conviction. He had also filed a representation for the charge. On May 21, Johan had told the court of his client's intention to file a representation to have the charges against him reviewed.

KOTA TINGGI: A 26-year-old motorcyclist died after crashing into a fallen tree shortly after midnight on Wednesday (Aug 13). Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said police received a report about the incident, which occurred along Jalan Kampung Teluk/Pelepat, Tanjung Sedili here, at 12.10am. 'The accident was believed to have occurred when the male victim hit a fallen tree and fell from his motorcycle. 'The victim sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the Tanjung Sedili health clinic,' he said in a statement. He said the victim's body has been sent to the forensic unit at Kota Tinggi Hospital for investigation purposes. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a minimum prison sentence of five years and a maximum of 10 years, as well as a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000. Supt Yusof also advised the public to remain alert and obey traffic laws and regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police are urging witnesses to come forward following a fatal accident involving a motorcyclist on Penang Bridge. The incident occurred at Kilometer 4.8 of the bridge towards Perai earlier today. Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Chief ACP Helmi Aris confirmed the victim was a 65-year-old man. Initial investigations suggest the motorcyclist was travelling from George Town to Butterworth before the collision. The victim reportedly brushed against another vehicle before falling and being run over by a heavy vehicle. He suffered severe head and body injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving causing death.
