Giro d'Italia: Olav Kooij sprints to stage 12 glory as Del Toro retains pink jersey

The Guardian22-05-2025

Olav Kooij sprinted to victory on stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia as Isaac del Toro retained the pink jersey in Viadana.
Kooij was helped by a superb lead-out from Visma-Lease A Bike teammate Wout van Aert, with Casper van Uden second over the line ahead of Britain's Ben Turner.
The 172km stage from Modena, the first opportunity for the quick men in a week, came down to the final few bends of a technical finish left slightly damp by earlier rain in Viadana, and Van Aert used all his experience to win the fight for position going into the final sharp left-hander.
Team Picnic PostNL's Van Uden tried to go long with his sprint after being left with a slight gap as the road straightened out, but Kooij kept his cool to take the win while the Ineos Grenadiers' Turner held off Mads Pedersen for the last step on the podium.
A small crash in the peloton with around one kilometre left to go neutralised the times for the overall standings, allowing the general classification contenders to sit up. Del Toro leads by 33sec from his UAE Team Emirates teammate Juan Ayuso with Bahrain-Victorious rider Antonio Tiberi third.
Bonus seconds saw Wednesday's stage winner Richard Carapaz move up to fourth, on the same time as Kooij's teammate Simon Yates in fifth, one minute and 11sec off pink.

New Ulster signing receives first Springboks call-up ahead of summer Test series

The rampaging number eight, who will move to Ravenhill over the summer from Northampton Saints, is one of nine uncapped players called up to Rassie Erasmus' 54-man extended panel. South Africa begin their summer schedule with a game against the Barbarians in Cape Town on June 28, followed by Tests against Italy in Pretoria and Gqeberha on July 5 and 12 respectively and finishing off against Georgia in Nelspruit on July 19. It seems unlikely that 27-year-old Augustus will see any game time as six of the eight back rowers from the Springboks' last squad have been retained, including reigning and two-time World Player of the Year Pieter-Steph du Toit and captain Siya Kolisi. However, it says much about the Alexander Bay native that he has been included in the squad after being part of last month's national alignment camp, with Erasmus clearly a fan of the Ulster-bound back row. Augustus has been in red-hot form for Northampton this season and only missed out on their Champions Cup Final against Bordeaux due to injury, helping them reach their first decider since 2011 with a bulldozing performance against Leinster in the Semi-Finals. His call-up, however, could prove to be an issue for Ulster, who were anticipating the former Stormers man being available for the start of the United Rugby Championship campaign on September 26 but may now be without him should he see any action for his country. Even more concerning would be if he impresses sufficiently to be called up to the Springboks squad for firstly the Rugby Championship, which extends into the first weekend of October, and then the Autumn Internationals, when Erasmus' men face France, Italy, Ireland and Wales in November. While Ulster would never prevent a player from representing their country, the intention was for Augustus to be a fulcrum at the centre of their forward pack in their bid to return to the URC Play-Offs next season, and being without one of their marquee players for a significant period – Ulster have six League games before the end of November – would be less than ideal for head coach Richie Murphy. The province are well-stocked in the back row, with James McNabney emerging last season alongside Ireland flanker Nick Timoney and David McCann, and Ireland lock Cormac Izuchukwu also able to step in at blindside flanker, but Augustus was set to provide a new dimension to the loose forward trio.

Arsenal sell forgotten star for £6.5m three years after he last played – and they could rake in more for him this summer

ARSENAL have added around £6.5m to their summer transfer kitty after Nuno Tavares completed a switch to Lazio. The Portuguese full-back spent last season on loan at the Italian club – having also been loaned out by the Gunners to Marseille and Nottingham Forest over the past two seasons. 2 2 Boss Mikel Arteta was left unimpressed by the 25-year-old after making 22 Prem appearances in his debut 2021/22 campaign following an £8m move from Benfica. SunSport understands that within his Lazio loan deal, there was an obligation to buy should they not be relegated from Serie A. The Italian side ended up finishing seventh this term. With Lazio considering selling Tavares straight on this summer for an immediate profit – despite signing him up on a three-year deal – Arsenal would also benefit with a sell-on of up to 25 per cent. Tavares is Arsenal's first sale of the summer, expected to be one of many with defenders Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Leandro Trossard linked with moves away. Kiwior is being looked at by several clubs in Italy, Zinchenko is being monitored by Borussia Dortmund and Trossard has admirers in Saudi Arabia. Both Jorginho and Kieran Tierney are leaving on free transfers, while Raheem Sterling and Neto are returning to their parent clubs after season-long loans. Arsenal are making room for several incomings in what Arteta has described as a 'big summer', which could see them splash £200m. Midfielder Martin Zubimendi is on the brink of having his £51m move from Real Sociedad confirmed, with Thomas Partey also close to signing a new deal with his contract expiring this month. A No.9 is at the top of new sporting director Andrea Berta's list, targeting £60m-valued Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres and £69m-valued Red Bull Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko. Other areas are also in need of bolstering. Arsenal want a new No.2 to challenge David Raya. Espanyol's £25m-valued Joan Garcia is of interest, but would need to compete with Barcelona for his signature. A defender could also be needed, but Arteta is currently happy with his options in Zinchenko, Kiwior, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber, Ben White, William Saliba and Gabriel. Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams – worth around £50m – remains highly-rated by Arteta. But his sky-high wages are proving an issue with Arsenal unwilling to break their current financial structure.
