Nick (Max Minghella) and Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) were both killed by a bomb that detonates on a plane carrying some of Gilead's most villainous High Commanders, including Commander Wharton (Josh Charles).

Comm. Lawrence intentionally got on the plane to blow it up, and he was joined by Nick shortly before takeoff.
June (Elisabeth Moss) tearfully watched as her lover and father of her daughter, Nick, and her ally, Comm. Lawrence, both perished onboard the plane.

Minghella, 39, revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he learned of Nick's death from Moss (who directed the episode) long before they read the scripts for the final season.

'This is a very poignant way to end to me,' the actor said. 'I felt like a grounded version of Nick, and what I was really impressed by was how much it was not what I thought it was going to be. It's such a compliment to everybody who works on the show that they came up with something really inventive and still very much within the context of the show.'

'It was really a blessed and wonderful way to finish, to have Lizzie directing my last scene in the show. It was fitting to finish with Brad, too,' Minghella added. 'We've become so close. I just adore him. I didn't know him before 'The Handmaid's Tale,' and now I consider him one of my nearest and dearest friends. To do our last scene together was perfect.'

Whitford, 65, told THR that he was 'dreading' filming Comm. Lawrence's final moment on the show.
'I was very happy that Lawrence made the choice that he made,' said the Emmy winner. 'I think as he's listening to Nick and sitting on the plane [in the final scene] he's thinking, 'This poor kid is another victim of this hellscape that I created.''

While he wasn't sure if Comm. Lawrence would got out as a hero or a villain, he always believed his character was 'redeemable' despite his involvement with Gilead.
Moss, 42, revealed that she 'humbly requested' to direct Episode 9 after learning of the double character deaths.
'With the final season, we were all constantly making sure the show moved forward,' Moss shared. ''Do we end in a different place than we began? Don't be stagnant. Keep going forward, because this is it. There's 10 episodes left to get to the end.' No character this season ends in the same place that we begin.'

Some show viewers complained about how Nick's death was handled on X (formerly Twitter).

'5 seasons of Nick disliking Gilead but being stuck regretting his past just for them to completely villainize him in 3 episodes & kill him. HE WAS A PLANT THAT HATED GILEAD IN THE BOOKS & WORKING WITH MAYDAY. WHAT WERE THE WRITERS THINKING WTF,' one fan wrote.
'Nick was never a hero. He was complicit from the beginning and deserved his fate, especially after betraying June. Boy bye,' another person said.

A third person tweeted, 'Honestly, what's wrong with writers who can't stick to the original material? In the books, Nick's from mayday and reunites with Holly, but now he's suddenly a nazi and just got blown up? And Serena's a sweet pie??'
'Well, that just ruined my night. Nick Blaine, you deserved better than whatever that was. The one person who literally sacrificed everyone and everything he had every season for her and that's what he gets,' a different fan wrote.
The new episode also featured Taylor Swift's song 'Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor's Version)' from her upcoming rerecorded album, 'Reputation (Taylor's Version).'

Moss said in a statement to Billboard that she's wanted to include Swift's music in the dystopian series 'for many years.'
'We finally found the perfect spot for a track from her, and I'm so glad we waited because there could not be a more perfect song for a more perfect moment,' Moss said. 'Taylor has been such an inspiration to me personally. It's such an honor to be able to use her music in the final episodes of our show.'
The series finale of 'The Handmaid's Tale' airs next Tuesday on Hulu.

Juneteenth celebration set for June 14

TUPELO — Every year, residents and officials alike gather at Gum Tree Park to celebrate the day the last slaves were notified of their emancipation following the American Civil War. Tupelo will host its annual Juneteenth Tupelo Freedom Celebration June 14 at 4 p.m. at Gum Tree Park, with a separate celebration set from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on June 19, the official day of the federal holiday. Both are free to attend. 'We are very excited. Each year gets better. Each year… more people become aware of not just the festival but also the history,' organizer Jennifer Lawrence said. 'We come from a people that persevered. They went through a lot of oppression but we are here. We are still growing and evolving and we are making strides.' Juneteenth, a portmanteau of June and 19th, marks the annual celebration of the day Union soldiers traveled to Texas to announced that all enslaved Black people in the state were now free, officially ending slavery in the United States. In 2021, former President Joe Biden signed a law naming the day a federal holiday. The Saturday, June 14, festivities will include music performances, multiple speakers, a barbecue cook-off, a kids zone, a dance contest and giveaways. As part of the event, four graduating Black high school seniors or college students each will receive a $300 Conway Goree Scholarship. There will be a mini motorbike raffle as well. Before the June 19 celebration at the park, Lawrence said there will be a march from Gum Tree Museum on main street up to the monument by the old courthouse. Musical performances include Rapper J, Unique JS, Geno Jones' FOCUS, KP & Favor, Genesis United of Starkville, Mighty Gospel Warriors, Lawrence McKenzie, Changed of Amory, Tay Cheesy Brand the Line Dance Queen, J. Green & The Smack Band, The Crossroads Band, EJ Soul, Music Doll TB and more. Before the event proper begins, there will be a parade that starts 3 p.m., starting at the C.C. Augustus Center on North Green Street. Organizers request those attending bring lawn chairs. On June 20, the second annual 'Freedom Face Up' basketball tournament will take place at the Tupelo Police Athletic League, 204 Douglas Street. For more information, contact, Bridgett 'Miss Bam' Shelly at (662) 871-7590 or Lawrence at (662) 816-8403. Lawrence said vendors are still welcome to apply.

‘Ballerina' Losing Opening Weekend Box Office Match To ‘Lilo & Stitch'

Ana de Armas in "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina." Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves' From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is falling short in its quest to take the No. 1 spot from Lilo & Stitch at the weekend box office. Lilo & Stitch, of course, had a blockbuster opening over the four-day Memorial Day weekend box office from May 23-26 and fended off Karate Kid: Legends to hold on to its box office crown in its second-weekend frame from May 30-June 1. This weekend, Disney's live-action adaptation of the 2002 animated classic is continuing its domestic box office dominance against Ballerina, which is a prequel movie set during the events of 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Deadline is projecting that Lilo & Stitch is on track to earn $32 million to $34 million from 4,185 theaters through Sunday, while forecasting a $26 million to $30 million No. 2 debut for Ballerina, which is opening in 3,409 venues. Deadline's estimate for Ballerina falls within the range of a mid-week projection by Variety, which pegged a $28 million to $30 million opening frame, but comes up short of Box Office Pro's opening weekend forecast of $32 million to $40 million. Ballerina had a $90 million production budget with a prints and advertising budget of $45 million, Deadline reported. Although the character of John Wick is part of the film's formal title, Keanu Reeves plays a supporting role in Ballerina, in which Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick all reprise their roles from the John Wick franchise. Rated R, Ballerina also stars Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus. Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves in "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina." While Ballerina is falling short of pre-release forecasts, its projected take of $26 million to $30 million is enough to create a healthy separation from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Tom Cruise's latest— and potentially last — mission as Ethan Hunt is projected by Deadline to earn $14 million from 3,496 North American theaters through Sunday for a No. 3 finish this weekend after spending two weekends at No. 2. The Hollywood trade publication also projects a $9 million take for Karate Kid: Legends from 3,859 theaters domestically for the No. 4 spot and a $5.7 million take for The Phoenician Scheme from 1,678 venues for a fifth place finish. The latest comedy from director Wes Anderson, The Phoenician Scheme staged its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the South of France in May and opened in limited release in six theaters on May 30. Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend as new domestic and international numbers become available. The final numbers for this weekend's box office will come out on Monday.
