Chatham Arts Council announces grant opportunities
PITTSBORO — The Chatham Arts Council is now accepting applications for its annual Grassroots Arts Grants, a program aimed to help organizations do amazing work through the arts. Since 2000, the council has awarded more than $288,000 to nonprofits, who in turn, use the money to fund artists and carry the arts into every corner of the county. 'Grassroots Arts is such a cool statewide program, and we've been partnering with the NC Arts Council on it for more than 20 years,' CAC Artistic Director Cheryl Chamblee said in a release. The council serves as the designated county partner to the North Carolina Arts Council in awarding the funds to local organizations. Cash grants range from $500 to $3,000, and are typically used for program expenses (i.e., artists' fees, space rental) or operating expenses for arts organizations. Areas of particular interest are local artist fees and fair payment to artists and outreach to community members with less access to the arts. Organizations applying must: * Have been in operation for at least one year as a nonprofit; * Have an arts mission or a program that uses the arts to help accomplish the organization's mission; * Be based in Chatham County. The deadline for applications and supporting materials is June 26 at 11:59 p.m. To apply or for more information, go to For questions, email Heather O'Shaughnessy at heather@ Past recipients have included organizations such as Abundance NC, Bynum Front Porch, Chatham Artists Guild, Chatham County Partnership for Children, Chatham Trades, Community Organizing for Racial Equality, Hispanic Liaison of North Carolina, JM Arts Foundation, Main Street Pittsboro, NC Arts in Action, NC Arts Incubator, Pittsboro Elementary, Shakori Hills Community Arts Center, Smelt Art Gallery, Sprott Center for Youth (Moncure), StreetSigns and more.

Anti-gang efforts in NEPA target youth
PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — As gang-related crimes continue to be seen across Northeastern Pennsylvania, an effort is underway to try to prevent young people from joining gangs in the first place. A Luzerne County man who had fought against gangs across the country and our region is taking the anti-gang effort to first through third-graders. Crews called back to Plymouth Township fire Jim Marinello authored a children's book that brings gang awareness to very young kids in a way they can relate to and understand. We will take a look at the book, its message, and talk with the district attorneys from Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties, who talk about what they are seeing when it comes to young people joining gangs and the negative consequences of being in a gang.
