Insider thinks Eagles could find a hidden gem in a castoff with a familiar name

USA Today6 hours ago

Insider thinks Eagles could find a hidden gem in a castoff with a familiar name NFL Insider believes Philly may benefit from adding the son of a former Eagles star.
Once upon a time, people would ask what there was to talk about once the time expired on the Super Bowl and the Philadelphia Eagles entered the offseason. It certainly isn't that way anymore. The NFL Combine was once untelevised. Now, it has exploded into must-see television. Then, we all enter draft season.
Pro Days and Top-30 Visits overtake our thinking until the selection meeting finally arrives at the end of April. Once that wraps, we venture into rookie minicamp, OTAs, and mandatory minicamp. Then, there's a break until the Birds return for the beginning of training camp and another preseason.
There won't be any silence between June's midpoint and July 22, the official start of training camp. Perhaps you have heard. Jaire Alexander and the Green Bay Packers have ended their relationship in divorce, and the Philadelphia Eagles have been named frequently as a potential destination.
Alexander isn't the Eagles' only option for replacing the production they enjoyed from Darius Slay, Isaiah Rodgers, and Avonte Maddox, who all left during free agency. One of ESPN's top NFL insiders believes the Birds could benefit if nepotism begins playing a role in their decision-making.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler mentions Asante Samuel Jr. as a possible option for the Eagles' roster
As training camp approaches and things begin to pick up steam, one of the biggest topics of conversation will be Philadelphia's depth chart at defensive back. Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean have entrenched themselves in the starting lineup as an outside and slot corner, but there will be competition for the other outside starting gig. That one is expected to be spearheaded by a duel between Kelee Ringo and newly-acquired Adoree' Jackson.
A possible Jaire Alexander acquisition upsets the apple cart. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler recently appeared on 97.5 The Fanatic and threw another name into the mix, free-agent corner Asante Samuel Jr.
If Samuel's name looks familiar to you, that's because it should. His father played in Philadelphia for four seasons (2008-11). During his time in the City of Brotherly Love, he was named a Second-Team All-Pro (2009) after leading the league that season in interceptions. He was also named a Pro Bowler three times.
Junior was placed on the Los Angeles Chargers' injured reserve due to a shoulder injury in October. He, as Fowler pointed out, lacks long speed. He is also recovering from a neck injury, but Alexander has had his share of injury concerns recently, too, which, no doubt, helped influence Green Bay's decision to move on.
Philadelphia invested in the son of a franchise legend by adding Jeremiah Trotter Jr. during the 2024 NFL Draft. Might they explore the possibility of adding another familiar name?
Like Trot Jr., Samuel wouldn't be guaranteed a starting gig. He'd have to earn it, but he'd add another talented prospect to the CB discussion. This, more likely than not, is a smoke-filled conversation that won't lead to any fires, but one thing is sure. If Asante Samuel Jr. is the fifth or sixth cornerback on this depth chart, there won't be any complaints about Philadelphia's depth at the position.

Uncovering Real Reason Todd Bowles Is On Buccaneers Hot Seat

Uncovering Real Reason Todd Bowles Is On Buccaneers Hot Seat originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made the playoffs each year since Bruce Arians retired as head coach. That is a testament to the job Todd Bowles has done since taking over for the Super Bowl winner. Bowles' 27-24 record is nothing to shrug about. In the last three seasons, he has kept the Buccaneers as a perennial playoff contender. Advertisement That is no longer good enough, though. Tampa Bay has one of the best offenses in the league and a defense with plenty of talent at each level. It's no longer good enough to get to 10 wins and feel good about a Wild Card victory. The Buccaneers are good enough to compete for a Super Bowl. For that reason, Bowles is on the hot seat now. His career only shows a bigger reason why he may not be the right man for the job. In the last two seasons, the Buccaneers have seen their offensive coordinator/play-caller find head coaching jobs elsewhere. Because of Bowles' background as a defensive-minded coach, Tampa Bay will have to continue to recycle offensive coaches whenever they do a good enough job. Advertisement Therein lies the difficulty of hiring non-offensive play-callers for head coaching jobs. The more quarterback Baker Mayfield excels with a different play-caller, the more obvious it is that Tampa Bay needs to find a quality head coach who won't bring instability on that side of the ball. If a team is going to rely on a defensive-minded head coach, it needs to make sure it excels with multiple playoff wins per year. Think of coaches like Sean McDermott of the Buffalo Bills, Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles, or Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions. None of those coaches calls plays on offense, forcing the team to recycle its play-caller. However, each coach has reached the conference championship. Bowles has not. Advertisement If Tampa's coach wants to prove he deserves his current job, he'll need to get past the team's previous history of good-but-not-great seasons over the last few years. His job may depend on it this year. Cade Otton Turning Heads During Buccaneers' Workouts

Cade Otton Turning Heads During Buccaneers' Workouts originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cade Otton may not be considered one of the best tight ends in football yet, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter has quickly become underrated around the league. Advertisement The 26-year-old has seen increases in both receptions and yards each year he has been in the league. The former fourth-round pick has quickly become a consistent receiving option for Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay's offense. Otton is already turning heads in Buccaneer offseason workouts in an important fourth season. More importantly, he's making things hard for some of his defensive teammates. "Cade, I am kind of sick of him right now," laughed inside linebacker Anthony Walker Jr on the team's website. "That is a real savvy route runner right there. Yeah, he got me a few times this offseason. So, I definitely have to get in my bag a little bit." Advertisement Star receivers like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin have gotten plenty of praise for their impact on Tampa Bay's passing offense. In many ways, Otton gets overlooked in the Buccaneers' offense. More importantly, he has also found a way to gain the respect of his quarterback in Mayfield. In his short career, Otton has played with Tom Brady and Mayfield. Even some of the better tight ends in history would beg for a chance like that. As he continues to develop his game, Otton has quickly gone from an afterthought to one of the key pieces in Tampa Bay's offense. He's in line for another career year at this point.
