10 best potential cities for MLB expansion teams

USA Today5 hours ago
The buzz in MLB is that expansion is on the horizon. Commissioner Rob Manfred has indicated it is time for more franchises to join the current 30. Which cities should be on the radar for expansion franchises? This is going to be an intriguing decision-making process, as building an MLB franchise from the ground up is a challenge. What will the criteria be for determining how MLB decides where it wants to grow? Will it be cities that have strong minor league followings?
To join the baseball expansion fun, here are our 10 spots that would best fit MLB expansion….
Nashville, Tennessee
The city is a hotbed for sports and already has the Sounds, a minor league team that draws healthy crowds. This is a location that can draw from many surrounding areas and sets up as a sweet spot for MLB to grow. Honorary ambassador: Todd Helton, although a lifetime Rockie, he played and starred in college baseball at Tennessee. Odds: 8 of 10
Montreal, Canada
Goes without saying that Montreal deserves another shot at baseball. The Expos' legacy has never stopped and this would be a great way to show that the city in Quebec can and will support an MLB franchise. Honorary ambassador: Youppi! Odds: 7 of 10
Portland, Oregon
All one has to do is see how beloved the Portland Pickles have become to recognize this is a perfect spot for an MLB franchise. There is a built-in audience and the marketing folks can simply feed off the brilliant promotions and events that the Great West League team has created. A natural spot. Honorary ambassador: Dillon the Pickles' mascot gets called to the bigs. Odds: 9 of 10
Charlotte/Raleigh, North Carolina
Charlotte and its nearby cities have become a sports hotbed. Football, baseball, hockey all are thriving in this North Carolina city. It is a strong fit to add a baseball franchise to a city that is growing and continues to create a sports buzz. Honorary Ambassador, former Minor League Baseball player Michael Jordan. Odds: 8 of 10
Salt Lake City, Utah
Salt Lake City has picked up sports steam by adding an NHL franchise to go with the Jazz. While it doesn't seem to be a destination the NFL would be interested in, this sports hotbed would be a great spot to add an MLB team. Honorary, Ambassador: Danny Ainge Odds: 7 of 10
Austin, Texas
The folks in Austin lover their sports. While it would be difficult to compete with the Longhorns' football team, there is plenty of room and time to avoid going head-to-head with the handful of Saturdays UT is home. The Texas baseball team is also beloved. Honorary, Ambassador: Any recruit UT wants as part of an NIL deal. Odds: 5 of 10
San Antonio, Texas
Texas is big enough for three MLB teams. So, if it comes down to Austin or San Antonio, it could be a tough choice. San Antonio has a larger population by around 600,000. It also isn't dependent on a student body that will comes and go during the summer. Honorary, Ambassador: Victor Wembanyama. Odds: 8 out of 10
Boise, Idaho
Boise already has Blitz the T dog, who could add bat dog to his roles. Imagine how cool it would be if the folks in Boise decided to keep the theme and play on a blue field. MLB would probably recoil at the idea. Honorary, ambassador: Rich Hill, who began his career with the Boise Hawks. He probably still will be pitching when these franchises begin. Odds: 2 of 10
New England Metro, Mass./R.I.
Put another team in Boston and base it around Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. That is a sound plan and given how devoted the folks in Boston are to their teams a love affair would quickly start. Honorary, ambassador: Green Day alternate band the Foxboro Hot Tubs Odds: 4 of 10
Vancouver, Canada
If Portland isn't chosen, the Northwest could handle another team. Vancouver would be a option but far behind placing a team in Montreal. Honorary, ambassador: Larry Walker Odds: 2 of 10

Carlos Correa remains confident in Astros despite rough stretch

Carlos Correa remains confident in Astros despite rough stretch originally appeared on The Sporting News The Houston Astros have lost three of their last four games and been outscored 33-4 during that span. The Astros lost two of three against the Baltimore Orioles and lost their series opener to the Detroit Tigers on Monday, and were shutout in all three losses. Although Houston still leads its division with a 69-56 record, the Astros' struggles date back to the All-Star break. Houston has gone just 9-15 over their last 24 games, and just 18-26 since the All-Star break, allowing the Seattle Mariners to creep within 1.5 games of them for the lead in the AL West. However, despite the elongated struggles, Astros' third baseman Carlos Correa is confident in his team's ability to turn it around. Carlos Correa remains confident in Astros Although the Astros traded for Correa at the 2025 MLB trade deadline, he's a vocal, veteran leader in the clubhouse. Correa spent the first seven years of his MLB career in Houston and holds a special presence for the Astros. Following Monday's 10-0 whooping, Correa expressed to reporters his confidence in the Astros' ability to bounce back. 'It's not been pretty, it's not been good," Correa said (h/t "If there is a group of guys that can turn it around, it's the group in here.' The Astros are hitting .152 with two extra-base hits in their last four games, and Monday's shutout marked the first time since 2005 Houston had been shutout three times in a four-game span. However, despite everything seemingly going wrong in the last few days, the Astros remain on top of the AL West because the Mariners have lost five of their last six games. 'We're first in our division, and we're in August and our best baseball is yet to come,' Correa said. 'I feel good about where we're at. We got some guys who are getting healthy and they're going to help down the stretch, and we have a lot of talent in this clubhouse. But we feel great.' Astros' designated hitter Yordan Alvarez will begin his Minor League rehab assignment on Tuesday, and Houston will have their ace, Hunter Brown, on the mound in Detroit. The past few days have not been pleasant for the Astros, but Correa is confident his team will turn it around soon.

Nats' Cairo and Mets' Mendoza become first Venezuelans to manage against each other in MLB

WASHINGTON (AP) — Miguel Cairo beamed with pride as the Washington Nationals' interim manager spoke about the hard work it took for him and his Venezuelan countryman, Carlos Mendoza, to get jobs leading Major League Baseball teams. On Tuesday night, Cairo and Mendoza of the New York Mets became the first Venezuelans in big league history to manage against each other. 'It's two countrymen, friends, and now to be exchanging the lineup at home plate, we're excited about it. We're proud to represent the Latinos in the United States, represent our country in the United States, and of course represent our organizations,' Cairo said. 'To me, it's a dream come true.' Mendoza was hired by the Mets after the 2023 season, becoming the third Venezuelan manager in major league history. Cairo became the fourth when Washington promoted him to interim manager in July after firing Dave Martinez. 'It's just an honor for both of us,' Mendoza said. 'I'm humbled by it. You know, this is a big deal back home. I didn't recognize that until it was brought up to me. But yeah, it's a special day.' The 51-year-old Cairo and the 45-year-old Mendoza both have ties to the New York Yankees organization. The Yankees were one of nine teams Cairo played for during a 17-year career, and Mendoza was a longtime coach with the organization before the Mets hired him. The two overlapped when Cairo worked as a Yankees minor league infield coordinator. Ozzie Guillén was the first Venezuelan to manage in the majors. He led the Chicago White Sox from 2004-11 and won a World Series title in 2005, then managed the Miami Marlins in 2012. Al Pedrique was Arizona's manager for half of the 2024 season, but the Diamondbacks and White Sox did not play each other that year. Asked if he was surprised the milestone had not come sooner, Cairo said the path to becoming a big league manager was difficult for everyone. 'You have to through the minor leagues, you have work your way up. You have to really work,' he said. 'Nothing is easy and you've got to earn it. And, you know, he earned it. I think I earned it.' ___ AP MLB: Ben Nuckols, The Associated Press
