‘I don't drink like Anurag Kashyap, I'm wiser than Anubhav Sinha': Vivek Agnihotri strikes down comparisons

Indian Express18-06-2025
Director Vivek Agnihotri has made a name for himself with his highly polarising and controversial brand of filmmaking. The first two movies of his 'Files' trilogy, The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files, divided audiences and were branded by some of them as propaganda. In a recent interview, Vivek shut down comparisons with his contemporaries, like Anurag Kashyap and Anubhav Sinha, while making another comment about Kashyap's supposed 'drinking-problem.'
While making an appearance on Shubhankar Mishra's podcast, Vivek defended his choice of films, and cited reasons behind why he felt compelled to make them. When the host told him that many people consider him to be the 'right-wing Anurag Kashyap', Vivek was swift to strike down the comparison. He said, 'I don't drink like him, though.' He added, 'People who like Anurag and watch his films only focus on the fault lines of this country. I focus on the greatness of this nation.' He said that he wasn't playing into any propaganda, and the decision behind making the trilogy was his own.

He said, 'This was my choice, the trilogy, and I decided to make these movies back in 2010. There have been several documentaries made on the Gujarat riots. People have already talked about it, and there is nothing new to bring to the screen.' He also distanced himself from another fellow director, Anubhav Sinha. The host told Vivek that when Anubhav made an appearance on the podcast, he told him that he would not be willing to work with Kangana Ranaut because of their ideological differences. Anubhav said, 'Agar aadmi hi na pasand ho, toh kaam kaise kare (If you don't like the person, you can't work with them).'
To this, Vivek said that there are a lot of people who he works with who don't necessarily align with his ideals or beliefs, but they are professional enough to put their differences aside, and so is he. He stated, 'That is Anubhav's own thinking; I am too wise for that. I can draw that line between the people I am working with. I don't have any personal conversations with the people that I am working with, and many of the people in my movies don't believe in the same ideologies that I do. So many people in the Bengal Files are themselves Bengali, but I work with national award-winning actors who are professional enough to get the job done.'
The final instalment of the trilogy, The Bengal Files, is all set to release on September 5. The cast of the film includes Darshan Kumaar, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Dibyendu Bhattacharya and Saswata Chatterjee. This time the theme for the film is around the 'right to life'. The Tashkent Files was centred around the 'right to truth', while the Kashmir Files explored the 'right to justice'.
This isn't the first time that Vivek has taken a dig at Anurag's supposed drinking problem. He told Digital Commentary recently, 'Anurag was a heavy drinker back then, and he couldn't be trusted. He brought Vikram Motwane on board, who is a very talented guy. He told me, 'Mera naya ladka hai woh kaam karega'.' Anurag responded on Instagram, calling him a 'liar'. They worked together on the film Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal.

TMC names Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar Lok Sabha Chief Whip, accepts Kalyan Banerjee's resignation

Mamata had on Monday appointed Abhishek Banerjee as the leader of the Trinamool Congress' Lok Sabha parliamentary party, replacing veteran MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay. According to party insiders, the appointment of Ghosh Dastidar as the party's new Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha has paved the way for Abhishek Banerjee to firm his grip over the TMC' Parliamentary Party in the lower house of the Parliament as she is known close to him. Mamata had held a virtual meeting with her party MPs on Monday afternoon, where she reportedly expressed displeasure over Kalyan Banerjee's performance. She alleged that Banerjee was ineffective in coordinating with fellow party MPs. Following this, Banerjee -- a Mamata loyalist within TMC's internal power dynamics -- submitted his resignation from the Chief Whip's post immediately after the meeting. While talking to a Bengali news channel after submitting his resignation, Kalyan had also alleged that most Trinamool Congress MPs remain absent in the House. 'Only 10-11 MPs remain present in the House out of 29 members. Someone doing theatre, someone sitting in a corporation and the guilty is Kalyan Banerjee? The MP of Kolkata South does not come to the Lok Sabha. Bankura MP remains absent. I have done most of the work and that's why the party thinks that I am most ineffective,' he had said, while claiming Mamata Banerjee knows everything. Without naming fellow party MP Mahua Moitra, Banerjee had also said, 'You have all seen the language of an uncultured woman against me. She even claimed that she could buy the party at Rs 200 crore as her husband has so much money.' Earlier, Banerjee's verbal battle with Moitra made several headlines.

'Can there be Bharat without Bangla?': Mamata warns against insulting Bengali language

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday asserted that no one should try to play with or insult the Bengali language, asking whether there can be an India without West Bengal. Banerjee pointed to Bengali litterateurs Rabindranath Tagore, who wrote the national anthem, and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, who penned the national song of India. "Nobody should try to play with our language or insult it," she said, asking, "Can there be Bharat without Bangla?" The TMC supremo's remark comes amid her strong criticism of the BJP over alleged attacks on Bengali-speaking migrant workers in various BJP-ruled states, as well as a recent Delhi Police order referring to the Bengali language as the "Bangladeshi national language." Pointing to the teachings of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Banerjee said on Tuesday that he taught all to live in harmony. "I believe in Ramakrishna Paramahansa's teaching of harmony of all religions," she said, after laying the foundation stone of a guest house of Ramakrishna Math and Mission at Kamarpukur in Hooghly district. "There is no division among us, we have learnt from Ramakrishna Paramahansa to live together with everyone," she said. Stating that Swami Vivekananda had taught that 'unity is strength', Banerjee said that his mother tongue was Bengali language, just as it was of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose or Raja Rammohan Roy. "Dharma is to treat other religions with love and respect," she said. Urging all to read Ramakrishna Paramahansa's 'Kathamrita', Banerjee said that people call water by different names, but it is the same. "Likewise, mother is called by different names, but she is the same," she said, before embarking on a visit to flood-hit Ghatal in Paschim Medinipur district. Banerjee also declared the formation of Jairambati-Kamarpukur Development Board, with Swami Lokottarananda, the secretary of the Ramakrishna Math, Kamarpukur, as its chairman. On Sunday, the TMC supremo lashed out at the Delhi Police for referring to the Bengali language as "Bangladeshi national language" in a purported letter, alleging that it was "insulting, anti-national and unconstitutional." "See now how Delhi Police under the direct control of the Ministry of Home, Government of India, is describing Bengali as "Bangladeshi" language!" Banerjee had posted on her Facebook account, sharing a copy of the letter. The TMC supremo described the Centre as anti-Bengali and urged all to stage protests against such "anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate Bengali-speaking people of India."
