What we know about the Super Bowl halftime show demonstrator
The protester was confirmed by the NFL to be part of Kendrick Lamar's halftime show. The individual acted without coordinating with showrunners, the league said.
Here's what we know.
The protest occurred late in Lamar's set, soon after he launched into his performance of his song 'tv off.'
Footage and photos show the protester was clad in black – matching the dancers around him – with what appears to be a combination of the Sudanese and Palestinian flags, reading 'Sudan' and 'Gaza,' respectively.
The protester was first seen standing atop a black car used as part of the stage. Video captured by CNN affiliate WDSU then shows the individual running onto the field with the flag before security personnel grab him.
The flags were briefly seen in the background during the Super Bowl broadcast.
The demonstrator has not been publicly identified, but the NFL confirmed he was one of the 400-member cast that performed on the field.
New Orleans police described the demonstrator only as an adult Black man, saying he was ejected from the stadium after being detained. As of Monday morning, it appeared he would not face further consequences, with police indicating he was not arrested.
'No arrest nor summons was issued,' the NOPD said in a news release. 'As such, the individual will not be identified.'
'The NOPD continues to work with NFL and the halftime production team to ascertain any affiliation the individual may have had with the halftime show,' the release added.
An NFL spokesperson commended security for 'quickly detaining' the individual, saying in a statement late Sunday, 'The individual hid the item on his possession and unveiled it late in the show. No one involved with the production was aware of the individual's intent.'
The protest was not planned nor did it occur in any of the halftime show rehearsals, according to a separate statement by Roc Nation, the Jay-Z-owned company that serves as an entertainment adviser to the NFL.
CNN has sought comment from representatives for Lamar.
The demonstration was evidently about the ongoing conflicts ravaging Sudan and Gaza, where millions of people have been gripped by humanitarian crises.
While a ceasefire took effect last month, much of Gaza has been destroyed over the last 16 months as Israel bombards the enclave in response to the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed, and 1.9 million people – about 90% of Gaza's population – have been displaced, according to the United Nations.
In Sudan, thousands have died and millions have been displaced amid a civil war between two generals competing for territory: Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, who heads the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The war, which began in April 2023, has since spiraled into one of the world's worst humanitarian catastrophes. The US has previously determined both sides have committed war crimes, and last month, outgoing-Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the RSF had committed genocide – the nation's second in less than three decades.

Jon Gruden's lawyers: Ruling paves way for "holding the NFL accountable"
The NFL has not provided a comment in response to the finding by the Nevada Supreme Court that the arbitration clause in the NFL's Constitution and Bylaws is "unconscionable" — and thus unenforceable — as to former Raiders coach Jon Gruden. Gruden's lawyers have issued a statement to PFT. "We're very pleased with the Nevada Supreme Court's decision, not just for Coach Gruden but for all employees facing an employer's unfair arbitration process," said Adam Hosmer-Henner of McDonald Carano LLP, the firm representing Gruden. "This victory further vindicates Coach Gruden's reputation, and it clears the way to swiftly bringing him full justice and holding the NFL accountable." It's likely if not inevitable that the NFL will file a petition for appeal to the United States Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court doesn't take the case (or if it does and the NFL loses), it will be time for the case to proceed to discovery. And that's when the NFL may throw money at Gruden in an effort to settle his claim that the league and Commissioner Roger Goodell leaked emails he had sent while working for ESPN to multiple media outlets. Here's the most important question: Will he reject any offer the league makes? A July 2023 article about the leaked emails that forced Gruden to resign asserted that Gruden hopes "to burn the house down." That can happen only if he first proves who, from a fairly tight circles of people who had access to the supposedly secret emails from the Washington investigation, leaked some to the Wall Street Journal for publication on a Friday and then, when that didn't do the trick, leaked more to the New York Times on a Monday. At that point, things could get very interesting.

49ers' receiving group takes another hit with Jordan Watkins' injury
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers banged-up receiving group sustained another loss with promising rookie Jordan Watkins sidelined for about a month with a high ankle sprain. Watkins had a 50-yard catch in his exhibition debut on Saturday night against Denver when he played 39 snaps in his first game action since being drafted in the fourth round in April. He didn't feel anything after the game but reported soreness in his ankle on Sunday when the injury was diagnosed. 'We weren't that worried about it until we got an MRI and it showed a high ankle,' coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. "So, who knows the date on those, but those usually take about a month to me.' Watkins had taken advantage of his chances in camp with starters Jauan Jennings (calf) and Brandon Aiyuk (knee) missing time with injuries. Aiyuk is rehabbing after tearing the ACL and MCL ligaments in his left knee last season. There is no definitive timeline for Aiyuk's return but Shanahan is hopeful to get him back in the middle of the season. Shanahan also said he hoped to get safety Malik Mustapha and rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke back in the same time period as they are also recovering from ACL injuries. 'They're all different stages,' Shanahan said. "With where they're at, I always see them around Week 6, which means that could be Week 10, means it could be Week 5, but that's the area where I start thinking about it, which is a long way away. I know it's not Week 1 or anything like that, so it's something I'm not really thinking about too much.' Jennings has been out with a calf injury that sidelined him in the offseason and during training camp last summer. Jennings is also seeking a new contract but Shanahan said the absence is injury related. 'It is something that we don't think will be too serious, but it's bothering him now,' he said. "Depending on how much he misses, I mean, I always want guys out there. It helps him, it helps the team. But, Jauan was all right last year too missing some time.' The injuries and a potential suspension for Demarcus Robinson after he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge in early July leave the Niners with few healthy options at receiver outside of second-year player Ricky Pearsall. Shanahan said the team is always looking into potential additions but that for now the focus is on the players in camp. 'It's been an obvious situation to me for a while, so it's stuff we're working on," he said. 'It's stuff we're trying to really put pressure on these younger guys. That's why it was really unfortunate for Watkins to get that setback because we really believed he could have helped us early. But he needed to practice to be able to help us. So, it's a minor setback for him.' San Francisco did get some positive news on the injury front at receiver after second-year player Jacob Cowing hit the speeds he needed in a workout on Sunday to return from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him since the first day of camp. Cowing is expected back at practice on Tuesday. Roster moves The Niners signed DL Trevis Gipson and RB Jeff Wilson Jr. to one-year deals to get more healthy bodies in camp. Running back Ameer Abdullah was placed on injured reserve after injuring his ribs on Saturday night and No. 4 quarterback Tanner Mordecai was waived. Offensive lineman Andre Dillard was activated off the physically unable to perform list and will be in the mix at backup tackle for San Francisco. Rookie nickelback Upton Stout was held out of practice as he still had soreness in his calf. Cornerback Renardo Green will be out at least another week with a hamstring injury. ___ AP NFL:

Colin Cowherd Says Jalen Hurts Is More Like The Spice Girls Than Taylor Swift
National Football League Colin Cowherd Says Jalen Hurts Is More Like The Spice Girls Than Taylor Swift Published Aug. 11, 2025 7:55 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Colin Cowherd believes there are two types of quarterbacks in the NFL — the leaders and the ensemble. So where does he think Jalen Hurts falls? "Some quarterbacks in this league are Taylor Swift," Cowherd, the host of FOX Sports' "The Herd," said. "They're leading the entire tour. Most quarterbacks in this league are the Spice Girls. They're part of an ensemble. Jalen Hurts is part of an ensemble." Essentially, Cowherd is claiming that Hurts is a cog that helps the Philadelphia Eagles win, rather than the head of the snake, carrying them to victory. It's not necessarily a knock on Hurts, who was good enough to help the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX, but more of a criticism of the way fans perceive his greatness. "Fans view quarterbacks based on winning," Cowherd said. Hurts has done that at the highest level. But, he doesn't have the individual talent that positional counterparts such as Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson possess. ADVERTISEMENT In fact, the Eagles went on a nine-game winning streak during the regular-season, and a Super-Bowl-winning postseason run because they took the ball out of Hurts' hand. "Last year, in the bye week, the people who know him best said, 'You know, we'd be better off throwing less,'" Cowherd said. "That's a tell.'" That resulted in the Eagles having the lowest pass-rate in the NFL (43.7%). They ended the 2024 season with 448 pass attempts to 621 rush attempts. Cowherd is basically stating that the fans' perception of Hurts is inconsistent with his actual individual talent. And that notion was backed up in a recent survey that The Athletic conducted of NFL executives. After questioning 50 front-office members, Hurts was placed in the second-tier of quarterbacks, tied for ninth with Houston Texans' starter C.J. Stroud. In fact, only three of the 50 executives had him ranked in Tier 1. "This is not a knock on Jalen Hurts," Cowherd said. He stars in his role, but, "he was much closer to Brock Purdy than Mahomes, Burrow, Jackson, and Lamar," Cowherd added. "And that's exactly right." Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
