Orlando Pirates news: Saleng, Rapoo, Mayele, Hotto, new coach

The South African12 hours ago

Orlando Pirates have several flams to put out, and it's perhaps the Monnapule Saleng fire, which is the hardest to deflame.
The 27-year-old is obviously talented; he has proved it time and time again. However, his six-month hiatus has raised doubts about his ability to keep outside clubs at bay, suggesting that even if the Buccaneers want to sell Saleng, they lack interest.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates have yet to announce Jose Riveiro's successor over a month after the Spaniard left for North Africa, and it appears their list of candidates is diminishing, as Pitso Mosimane and Rulani Mokwena are both said to be in talks with Egyptian giants Zamalek and Pyramids FC.
Former Stellenbosch star Deon Hotto is set to stay at the club following their decision to offer the veteran playmaker a contract extension.
Meanwhile, both of the Soweto giants (Pirates and AmaKhosi) are in the race for rising star Neo Rapoo.
'Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are both keen to sign SuperSport United left-back Neo Rapoo ahead of the new season,' an inside source revealed.
'His performances as he led South Africa U20 to the Africa Cup of Nations title earned him interest in Scandinavia and the Gulf but sources as Matsatsansa have confirmed Chiefs and Pirates are both seriously after the player who is seen as future senior national team left-back.'
'With Orlando Pirates having released Paseka Mako and the retirement of Innocent Maela, their interest on the promising full-back comes as no surprise, while Chiefs are looking to remedy a position that has plagued them in the last couple of seasons.'

Long time coming? DStv considering sports-only packages

While millions of South Africans continue to ditch their DStv subscriptions, Multichoice has finally acknowledged a call for it to introduce tailor-made packages, particularly sports-only ones, featuring the SuperSport group of channels. The pay-TV company has recorded a monumental revenue loss over recent years. According to social media users, this follows the company's tone-deaf approach to affordability, diversity, and demands. Following shocking news that DStv had lost 3 million subscribers in 2 years, its parent company, Multichoice, conceded that it would consider consumer demands. For many South Africans, this means picking your own packages, tailor-made to your interests. Sports-only packages featured high up on the list. MultiChoice has reported a decline in its subscriber base for the financial year ending 31 March 2025, losing nearly 1.2 million subscribers. Image: MultiChoice Multichoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela stated that the company would investigate whether unbundling SuperSport from DStv and launching a sports-only package would be a feasible option for its business model. He said this week: 'We've accelerated that project in terms of getting us to finalise which direction we're going to take in this financial year. But yes, we are considering all options as part of a broader product offering going forward'. The investigation will conclude at the end of the current financial year-end in March 2026. Currently, the SuperSport group of channels is offered on DStv's Premium package – it's most expensive – which currently costs R949. For many sports enthusiasts, 'off season' means pausing their subscriptions or cancelling them altogether. In multiple financial reports, Multichoice has acknowledged that the rising cost of living meant that 'households are struggling to make ends meet and many had no choice but to give up their DStv subscription for the time being.' Thembinkosi Lorch to return to Orlando Pirates under Rulani?

Wydad Casablanca winger Thembinkosi Lorch could return to Orlando Pirates if Rulani Mokwena takes over as head coach. Mokwena is in pole position to take over from Jose Riveiro as Bucs coach after the Spaniard left for Al Ahly last month. Lorch joined Mokwena at Wydad but the 38-year-old coach's time in Morocco was cut short after the club decided to terminate his contract. Lorch and Rulani worked at Orlando Pirates briefly in 2019 before the 31-year-old former Bafana Bafana star rejoined the Soweto born coach at Mamelodi Sundowns five years later. 'Lorch has the talent, and we all know that,' Mokwena told iDiski Times . 'He's a player I like a lot for the final third because he has a lot of weapons. When he's at his best, he influences the result'. 'His adaptation has been gradual. I think he should be scoring more, and I told him this. We worked on certain movements and situations, and he knows how to finish and find the spaces around the box.' Although Mokwena has not touched much on his potential return to Pirates, he admitted he would be open to join the Soweto giants. Regarding Lorch, the ex-Downs coach highlighted the winger's weakness. 'The legs don't allow for movements from deeper areas that then place greater physical demands on making movements towards the box. This is why he needs to be a bit more patient in movement, receiving the ball, and arriving in spaces than earlier in his career,' Mokwena explained. 'In recent friendlies, Wydad's adjustments are evident—more structured in a mid- to low block without possession, and him having to defend the wide channel on the left makes him play further away from the box because he has to defend closer to [Ayoub] Boucheta in this role and assist [El Mehdi] Moubarik and [Mickael] Malsa or [Ismail] Moutaraji in protecting the left half space and extending the midfield line to protect zone 14,' he said. Lorch returning to Orlando Pirates might happen if Mokwena takes over. The 38-year-old coach is a big fan of Nyoso. Two released Orlando Pirates players never complained

Orlando Pirates made big decisions last month. The captain, Innocent Maela, and his vice skipper, Miguel Timm, left the Buccaneers after a combined 274 matches in the Betway Premiership. The club's veteran former skipper, Lucky Lekgwathi, has shared wisdom and gratitude towards the departed left-back and midfielder. Timm is linked with a move to fellow Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United, while Maela is set to take up a staff role at Orlando Pirates. Rumours: Kaizer Chiefs have signed these four players Lekgwathi believes the club made the right decision, while also saluting the duo for always remaining professional when opportunities to play dried up. 'For me, I think it was a good decision, as I believe that both guys played their part and contributed to the team over the years. Players come and go, and the club had to make a decision,' said Lekgwathi via Soccer Laduma . Kaizer Chiefs news: Another Congolese attacker Lucky Lekgwathi captains Orlando Pirates in the Premier Soccer League. Image: Kick Off 'I believe both guys played a big role in the club's progress, and they deserve a pat on the back for their contribution. You know, with some players, if they were regulars and played a big part when the club won trophies, they tend to complain when they are no longer playing as regularly, but with Maela and Timm, I don't remember that ever happening. 'The guys remained professional, and they led by example. They were good examples to the young players in the team. I am sure even the chairman was happy with the guys for the role they played in the team during their time. I am so proud of them, and I just want to wish them good luck going forward,' added Lekgwathi. New Orlando Pirates winger: 'I can attack and I can defend' 'They still have age on their side, and they can still play if they wish,' Lekgwathi added. 'Age is just a number, and I remember that in my late 30s I was still playing, and I was scoring crucial goals for the team, and I believe they can also do it with their experience,' concluded Lekgwathi.
