Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis to inaugurate dabbawallahs' museum in Bandra today

Time of India8 hours ago
MUMBAI: The classic dabbawallah dressed in white kurta pyjama and Gandhi cap embodies a tradition that is older than Ganeshotsav. The tiffin service began in 1890 while public Ganesh celebrations started in 1893.
The fire may be spent but the embers still glow. The dabbawallah community is still proud of the profession which transports home-cooked meals to students and office goers amid modern day food app deliveries. From handcarts to bicycles and public trains, their journey is one of swift, well coded efficiency.
On Thursday chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate a museum dedicated to the dabbawallahs of Mumbai that showcases their 135-year history and trade practices.
The Dabbawallah International Experience Centre, as it is called, is located near Rizvi College, Bandra. It includes plaques and installations, and a portrait of Mahadevrao Bachche, who founded the business. Funds were sanctioned by Fadnavis and MLA Shrikant Bharti facilitated the setup.

"An entire section of the museum is dedicated to explaining the precise, error free method of operation of our 5,000 dabbawallahs," said Ramdas Karvande who heads a dabbawallahs' union. Another union leader Ulhas Muke said the museum spans the history as well as prospects of the trade led by its Six Sigma rating that is an example to businesses worldwide.
The dabbawallahs have been included in the IIM syllabus and given TedX Talks and lectures in universities abroad, apart from famously being appreciated by King Charles and invited to royal weddings in the UK.
Another union leader Subhash Talekar said, "We appreciate the CM for his monetary grant for this museum. I feel he should walk the talk and grant affordable homes for a sum of Rs 10 lakh to dabbawallahs instead of Rs 25 lakh that they are currently allotted in Bhiwandi. Our boys barely earn Rs 20,000 per month. How can they afford Rs 25 lakh homes, and which bank will grant them loans?"

Consumer commission fines photographers for deficient wedding services

Koppal: The District Consumer Redressal Commission has ruled in favour of a couple who lodged a complaint against photographers for failing to provide promised wedding services. The commission has ordered the photographers to pay compensation and costs for the deficient service. According to consumer complaint No. 72/2024, Lekhana and Arpan from Koppal, hired Roshan Christopher and Emmanuel of Wedhoods Woollex, BTM Layout, Bengaluru, to provide photography and videography services for their pre-and post-wedding ceremonies. A contract was signed for Rs 1.2 lakh to cover the wedding ceremonies in Sakleshpur and Chikkamagaluru from Nov 28 to Nov 30, 2022, with Rs 1 lakh paid through UPI transactions. However, the couple later approached the consumer commission, alleging that the services provided by the company failed to meet the agreed terms. The commission, chaired by GE Saubhagyalakshmi and member Raju N Maitri, directed the photographers to pay Rs 25,000 as compensation to the complainants, along with interest at 6% per annum from the date of the complaint until the amount was paid. Additionally, Rs 5,000 was ordered to cover complaint expenses. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). I won't go to jail by denotifying land for Peripheral Ring Road-2 project in Bengaluru: DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Ruling out denotification of land notified for Peripheral Ring Road-2 (PRR-2) project, the govt Thursday said the 52-km stretch connecting Hosur Road with Mysuru Road will be implemented. The govt issued a primary notification for 2,716 acres of land in 2005-06, of which a final notification was issued for executing the Major Arterial Road (MAR) between Magadi Road and Mysuru Road, which forms part of PRR-2 alignment. The MAR stretch of over 10.7km is in advanced stages of completion. Replying to a question raised by BJP MLC HS Gopinath in the legislative council, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said there is no question of denotifying the land and the project will be implemented. He asked whether the govt would demolish over 10,000 houses to build the road. The BDA recently announced the formation of six layouts along the alignment of PRR-2. Shivakumar said, "Though the primary notification was issued in 2005-06, successive govts did not issue a final notification for acquisition of land nor sanctioned the plan. I am not ready to denotify the land and go to jail. This is also the govt's stand." Shivakumar said wherever residential structures have come up along the alignment, flyovers will be built to avoid land acquisition. Inferior quality headphones not replaced, forum asks e-tailer to pay consumer Rs31k

Ghaziabad: Over a year after a Loni resident felt at the receiving end of a "faulty delivery" from an e-commerce platform, he has got relief from the consumer forum. District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) has directed Amazon to collect the product from Sankalp Dhama and refund Rs 26,989, which was taken in advance for a premium headphone. Dhama had filed the complaint in June 2024, a month after the delivery of the product. A bench of DCDRC, comprising president Praveen Kumar Jain and members Shailja Sachan and RP Singh, on July 17 also directed the company to pay compensation of Rs 5,000 for mental agony and litigation costs within a period of 45 days from the date of the order. Failing this, an interest at 6% on the outstanding amount until the last date of payment must be paid. While reviewing the documents filed by the applicant, the commission observed that the e-commerce company acknowledged the complaint of faulty delivery through an email but did not replace the headphone or return the cost taken. "Under these circumstances, we conclude that Amazon must return the money and take back the headphone delivered to the customer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pierce Brosnan's Wife Lost 120 Pounds - This Is Her Now Undo Since they are found guilty of deficiency in service by delaying the process, they also must pay compensation of Rs 5,000," the commission ruled. "I got a booking confirmation the next day and on the evening of May 14, the delivery boy brought the product to my address," Dhama told the commission. He said that when he opened the packet, it contained a JBL Quantum 100 headphone, which is not only cheaper but also not equipped with the necessary functionalities that he was looking for.
