Maha: Thane gets first metro, trial run for Metro Line 9 phase I commences
Mumbai: The trial run of Phase-1 of Metro Line-9 commenced on Wednesday, marking the first-ever metro line in Thane district. It was flagged off by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister & Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Chairman Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
A technical inspection was also carried out in their presence. Metro Line-9 is part of Mumbai's pioneering double-decker infrastructure project, where both metro and vehicular flyovers share a common viaduct.
Phase 1 spans 4.4 km from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon, with stations at Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.
According to MMRDA, the Metro Line-9 will transform travel for Mira-Bhayandar residents by connecting directly to CSMIA Airport via Lines 7, 7A, and Andheri (West) via Line 2B, Ghatkopar via Lines 7 and 1, Link Road through Metro Line-2A at Dahisar (East), Thane via Line-10 at Miragaon ( in Future) and Vasai-Virar via the upcoming Line-13.
'The implementation of this corridor is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, especially near Dahisar Toll Naka, lower vehicular emissions and promote eco-friendly commuting, introduce energy-efficient systems like regenerative braking and employ green construction practices with reduced environmental impact,' said the MMRDA in a release.
Chief Minister Fadnavis said: 'Technical testing for this phase has begun. This stretch offers seamless connectivity along the Western Express Highway and will act as a major decongestion solution. It is the first time in the MMR that a double-decker structure combining a metro and a flyover has been constructed. Mira-Bhayandar will immensely benefit from this integration, and we are committed to completing 50 km of metro this year, followed by 62 km next year and 60 km in the year after. By 2027, metro travel will expand considerably, alleviating the load on our arterial roads.'
In his speech, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said: 'The proposed extension up to Virar will ensure connectivity across Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts. Under MMRDA's leadership, we are working towards a 337 km-long metro network for Mumbai. Our goal is to commission 50–60 km of metro each year, thereby offering complete last-mile and end-to-end connectivity. This will bring down the number of vehicles on the roads and reduce pollution levels significantly.'
Further, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said: 'Metro Line-9 is a testimony to our commitment to fast-tracking infrastructure projects that benefit the common man. With reduced travel times and enhanced intermodal connectivity, this corridor will improve the ease of commuting and contribute positively to the regional economy.'
MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee asserted that Metro Line-9 is a strategic connector that integrates Mira-Bhayandar with the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
'With seamless interchanges to key metro lines including Line-2A, Line-7, Line-1, and the upcoming Lines 10 and 13, this corridor creates a continuous, end-to-end travel experience from Mira-Bhayandar to Andheri, Ghatkopar, Thane, and even Vasai-Virar. It exemplifies our vision of 'Mumbai in Minutes'—where time, distance, and congestion no longer constrain opportunity, mobility, or growth,' he remarked.

American Airlines (Representative image) An American Airlines plane carrying passengers from Philadelphia to Naples had to make a sudden mid-air diversion after the pilots understood that the Boeing 787-9 that they were flying was not certified to land at Naples Airport; it was too big for the airport. The incident took place on June 2, and the airlines said the diversion to Rome was due to operational reasons. American Airlines Flight AA780 departed Philadelphia at 7:42 PM and crossed the Atlantic without incident. It was supposed to land in Naples at 10 am local time. But as the aircraft began its descent into Naples (NAP), the crew altered course and redirected the flight to Rome Fiumicino Airport, approximately 124 miles away from the destination. The passengers were bused from Rome to Naples which takes two hours. Historical flight data shows that American Airlines usually sends a Boeing 787-8 on flights to Naples. While these two Dreamliner variants are pretty similar, with the same wingspan, the 787-9 is actually 20 feet longer. Flight 780 had to change course over the Tyrrhenian Sea. The 787-8 is small enough to land at an airport with a Category 8 RFFS, but the 787-9 needs a Category 9 RFFS airport. Aviation enthusiast @xJonNYC, who first shared the incident on X, reported that the airport authority said 787-9 planes can't land in Naples. After landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport around 9:45 a.m., passengers were transported to Naples by bus, the airline spokesperson told Business Insider. "We apologize to them for this disruption to their journey," they added. The 787-9 departed Rome two-and-a-half hours later, operating Flight 111 to Chicago, per Flightradar24.

Lonavla skywalk: Internal road work to kick-start Rs909-crore tourism project
Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority is set to float tenders for building an internal road to state's longest glass skywalk proposed in Lonavala connecting lion and tiger points as part of a tourism project that will be executed at a cost of Rs909.04 crore. Eight tenders are currently under evaluation. "The road work will set the momentum for the mega project, which has been showcased as a major tourism initiative for the district. Tenders will also be floated for international bidders to bring in global expertise," a senior PMRDA official told TOI after attending a meeting held in this regard on Thursday. The proposed structure will be 125-metre-long, 6-metre-wide and will be built on the lines of Grand Canyon skywalk in Arizona, US. It will also include a 90-metre-long bridge, designed to enhance the overall visitor experience. The project has a two-year deadline for completion — in June 2027. Of the Rs909.04 crore investment, Rs213.12 crore have been earmarked for core infrastructure development, while works worth Rs695.92 crore will be carried out through public-private partnerships. "The entire development is centred around Kurwande village in Lonavla, known for its panoramic views and popularity among tourists from Mumbai and Pune," another official said. Land acquisition for the project has made significant headway. The authority has received in principle approval for acquiring 20.90 hectares of forest land and already transferred ₹5.25 crore to the forest department as net present value. To compensate for the diversion of forest land, alternative sites have been identified. Acquisition of 3,378 square metres of private land is in its final stages.
