Delhi HC gets new Judge, strength increases to 44
Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya administered oath of office to Justice Yadav, taking the strength of judges of the Delhi High Court to 44.
The sanctioned strength of the High Court is 60.
The swearing-in ceremony was held in the High Court premises.
Justice Yadav, who was a retired judicial officer of the Delhi District judiciary, was elevated to the High Court. He took the oath in Hindi.
The Centre had on August 8 notified the appointment of the judicial officer as Judge of the High Court.
In July, a total of nine Judges had taken oath of office of the Delhi High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium on July 28 had recommended the appointment of judicial officer Yadav as a Judge of the Delhi High Court.
His name was recommended seven months after his retirement.

Observing that there are several reasons, including poverty, that prevent people from filing appeals before higher judicial forums, the Madras High Court has ordered the release of a convict in a dacoity-cum-murder case by according him the benefit of parity with his co-convicts, who had been released from prison by an order of the Supreme Court in 2018. A Division Bench of Justices M.S. Ramesh and V. Lakshminarayanan concurred with the argument of advocate R. Sankarasubbu that if the convict Balu, alias D. Balasubramanian, had approached the top court along with the three co-convicts, there was every possibility of his sentence also having been reduced from life imprisonment to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The judges allowed a writ petition filed by the convict's wife Indira Gandhi, seeking the release of her husband on the ground of parity. They recorded the submission of Additional Public Prosecutor E. Raj Thilak, who also did not dispute the proposition of law laid down by the Supreme Court, in at least three cases, regarding the principle of extending parity to an unappealed convict. 'When the petitioner complains that her husband's constitutional right under Article 21 (right to life and personal liberty) had been violated, we cannot shrug off our duties and ask the petitioner to... prefer an appeal to the Supreme Court,' the judges wrote and pointed out that the criminal case was from the year 2002, and that more than two decades had passed since he was convicted. 'All that we are doing is performing our constitutional duty of rendering parity between A1, A2, A4 and the petitioner's husband. Our powers under Article 226 of the Constitution are wide and they have been granted only to enable us to do justice. This court also has the inherent power and the jurisdiction, while dealing with situations as presented in the present case, to render justice and prevent manifest injustice,' the judges said. According to the prosecution, the convicts had robbed 4.7 kg of gold and 5.5 kg of silver from a jewellery shop after killing a person who was sleeping inside the shop. Though the petitioner's husband had not committed any overt act with respect to the murder, he too was convicted under Section 391 of the Indian Penal Code, which makes all members of a gang liable for punishment even if one of them had committed murder. Though the trial court had imposed only 10 years of imprisonment on the convicts, the High Court had enhanced their punishment to life imprisonment in 2010 while allowing a 2006 State appeal for enhancement of sentence. However, allowing a further appeal by three of the convicts, except the petitioner's husband, the Supreme Court had reduced their sentence to 10 years in 2018 and ordered their release. Hence, the petitioner had now approached the High Court, by way of a writ petition, seeking parity and obtained the relief.

PATNA: Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday accused the Election Commission of India of collaborating with the Bharatiya Janata Party to manipulate Bihar's voter list by issuing two Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers to its leaders and workers. "Before we had talked about Bihar's deputy chief minister Vijay Sinha. Now you call it a crime, mistake, or an expose, we had said it before too, but today I want to tell you that EC is helping the BJP, and cutting the votes of the Opposition. The people of BJP are being given not one, but two EPIC numbers for themselves, in one vidhan sabha only, " Tejashwi said. "We are exposing one more thing. Muzzafapur's mayor, a BJP leader, named Nirmala Devi, she has two EPIC IDs in the same vidhan sabha. In that too, they are different. Not only this, but Nirmala Devi has two brother-in-laws, they also have two EPIC numbers," he added. The RJD leader further claimed that during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) ahead of the assembly elections, names of people from other states were being added to Bihar's voter list. "Now the people of Gujarat are becoming voters of Bihar. Bhikhubhai Dalsaniya, who is in charge of the BJP, has become a voter of Patna. He also alleged that "vote chori" took place in the 2020 Bihar elections. "Before BJP had a formula of winning elections, using CBI, ED, Income Tax used to be put (on Opposition), when these agencies became useless, the Election Commission has been brought forward. Election Commission did vote chori, vote dacoity in 2020 ( Bihar assembly elections ) too. The vote difference of ours (opposition and the ruling alliance) was just 12 thousand (votes) and in that we were made to lose more than 10 seats," Yadav claimed. Questioning the neutrality of the poll body, he added, "Some with 12 votes, or 50, or 500 votes, that way we had many seats which we were made to lose. Earlier, on August 10, Bihar deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha stated that he would respond to the notice issued to him concerning allegations of possessing two EPIC numbers. "I will certainly reply to the notice from the constitutional body. I respect the constitutional body and have faith in the Constitution," Sinha stated. The Patna district magistrate and the Bankipur Electoral Registration Officer have issued notices to Sinha regarding the allegations, with the ERO requesting a response by August 14. Responding to the charges, Sinha said, "Our whole family had voter IDs from Bankipur. In April 2024, I applied to add my name to the Lakhisarai constituency and remove it from Bankipur. It did not happen immediately, so I called the BLO, filled the form, and took the receipt. I have all the documents. I voted from only one place last time too; it was in Lakhisarai." Very tragic: Prez Murmu on Rajasthan road accident
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said the loss of lives in a road accident in Rajasthan is very tragic and prayed for the recovery of those injured. A pickup van crashed into a stationary truck in Rajasthan's Dausa district in the early hours of Wednesday, killing 11 people, including seven children, and injuring eight, police said. The passengers of the pickup van were returning to their village in Uttar Pradesh's Etah after visiting Khatu Shyam and Salasar Balaji temples when the accident occurred on the Manoharpur highway, they said. 'The news of the death of many people, including women and children, in a road accident in Dausa, Rajasthan, is very tragic. I express my deep condolences to the bereaved families.
