Indore:The Union minister of state for Defence Sanjay Seth participated in a large-scale tree plantation drive in Indore on Sunday under the Ek Bagiya Maa ke Naam campaign.
During the event, 11,000 saplings were planted each at the BSF campus and near Gandhinagar police station behind Pitru Parvat.
The campaign has set a target of planting 51 lakh saplings.
Seth praised Indore's commendable contribution to environmental conservation.
"The Ek Ped Maa ke Naam and Ek Bagiya Maa ke Naam campaigns have spread the message of environmental conservation across India. Just as Indore has secured the top spot in cleanliness for the eighth consecutive time, it will also become a leading city in greenery and environmental efforts.
Other cities in the country can follow Indore's example to achieve this status," he said.
He added that Indore achieved a significant milestone last year by planting over 51 lakh trees.
Urban development and housing minister Kailash Vijayvargiya urged citizens to plant a tree in their mother's name, care for it, and leave the gift of greenery for future generations. Garden in-charge Rajendra Rathore said that land was provided for the construction of a treated water pipeline and sump well to maintain the saplings planted by the BSF. TNN

Elephant corridor planned in Hassan dist to mitigate human-wildlife conflict

Hassan: The forest department in Hassan district is set to create an elephant corridor at a cost of Rs 53 crore to mitigate the human-elephant conflict. A proposal in this regard will be submitted to the Union govt. The work will commence upon getting approval, said minister of forest, ecology, and environment Eshwar Khandre. Wild elephant menace is rampant in the district. Apart from attacking humans, the elephants also damage properties. Nearly 100 elephants have been roaming near the human habitats and forest border areas in the district. The minister appreciated forest officials for their dedication and highlighted the importance of raising awareness on human-wildlife conflict through social media. Last year, seven people lost their lives in elephant attacks, and this year, four people died. Karnataka leads the country with 6,500 elephants and ranks second with 565 tigers. He stressed that wildlife conservation is everyone's responsibility and emphasised the necessity of coexistence. The state forest department is developing certain programmes to control the menace. The department is considering establishing an elephant control zone. Due to the reduction in forest areas and the increase in animal populations, crops were destroyed in places like Hassan, Belur, and Sakleshpura. Elephants are leaving the forests and entering rural and urban lands. To prevent their entry, the govt plans to implement a permanent solution, which includes building fences and digging trenches.
