CPM presents 28 key demands for devpt of Ullal

Time of India29-04-2025

Mangaluru: A massive protest was organised at Deralakatte grounds on Tuesday, under the joint leadership of the
CPM Ullal
and Mudipu area committees. The protest advocated for the comprehensive development of Ullal taluk, and presented
28 key demands
of the local populace.
CPM district secretary Muneer Katipalla said that a lobby of real estate, education, and health sectors is operating in Ullal taluk. He mentioned that people's representatives discuss development with owners of medical colleges, educational institutions, and various enterprises, which leads to policies that protect their interests. Local fishermen, Dalits, tribals, labourers, transport workers, and local workers in various institutions are being ignored, he said.
The red soil mafia is engaged in illegal mining in rural areas, while the sand mafia is exploiting Nethravati River and islands. The opposition BJP only takes to the streets on communal issues, engaging in divisive politics, which has left the common people of the constituency helpless.
He suggested Mangaluru MLA and assembly speaker UT Khader focus on demands related to housing, public health, education, and employment creation, and curb the mafias. "If comprehensive development involving the common people is not pursued, the CPM will take the struggle to the villages," he warned.
In his introductory speech, CPM Ullal area secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said that each of the 28 demands of the local populace was studied before being presented. The demands presented at the protest gathering will transform into broader struggles, he added.
CPM state secretariat member K Yadav Shetty and senior communist leader Krishnappa Salian addressed the gathering.

Our doors are open for Badgujar: Bawankule

Nashik: Despite significant internal opposition, including from Nashik West MLA Seema Hiray and other BJP functionaries, state BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule has indicated that the door remains open for Sudhakar Badgujar — the recently expelled Shiv Sena (UBT) deputy leader — to join the saffron party. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Badgujar had been accused by the BJP of being anti-national after purported video clips surfaced showing him with 1993 Mumbai Bomb Blast convict Salim Kutta. However, Bawankule, speaking in Nashik at a workshop for over 550 party office-bearers from the Nashik division, asserted that an individual is not a criminal until proven so in a court of law. When asked about Badgujar potentially joining the party, Bawankule said, "The doors are open to all those who want to join the party." He acknowledged the existing "bitterness, misgivings, and misunderstandings" between Badgujar and current BJP leaders, citing their past electoral contest in the assembly elections. Bawankule added that he and Girish Mahajan were "looking into the matter". He emphasized that no deadline had been set for a decision on Badgujar's inclusion. "It will take time. After all, the party is striving for the development of society and the country, and we want to increase the party bases. We will decide appropriately and accordingly if anybody wants to join us without any conditions," Bawankule said. In response to the question that party functionaries felt accepting Badgujar into the party fold would malign the party image, Bawankule said, "Making allegations against a person is one thing, and conviction by the court is another. I personally believe that no one should judge any person based on allegations." Regarding the Thackeray brothers coming together, Bawankule said the party has nothing to do with their decision, especially when the Mahayuti is stronger than ever.

Bengaluru stampede: ‘Craving publicity when people died,' H D Kumaraswamy demands Karnataka govt to sack Deputy CM D K Shivakumar

Holding Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar responsible for the stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru that killed 11 people, Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy Thursday demanded that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sack Shivakumar from the Cabinet. Kumaraswamy alleged that the 'insensitive' attitude of Shivakumar was on display after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) arrived at Bengaluru Airport following their win in the Indian Premier League, during the felicitation at Vidhana Soudha and at the stadium. 'He was craving publicity even when people were dying,' he told reporters in Delhi. He said that Shivakumar acted as a 'rowdy' during the incident. 'What was the necessity to hold the (felicitation) event at the grand stairs of Vidhana Soudha? The entire state government made it their family event. It was a show of dadagiri by the deputy CM. Even after knowing that people had died, he participated in the event held inside the stadium,' Kumaraswamy alleged. BJP state president B Y Vijayendra said that even as TV channels were reporting the deaths, the deputy chief minister was seen kissing the cup at Chinnaswamy Stadium. 'What was the necessity of organising celebrations in front of Vidhana Soudha when an event was already planned at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government should come clean on whether the decision to celebrate at Vidhana Soudha was taken by the deputy CM or by the CM, and when that decision was made,' he said. Meanwhile, Shivakumar accused the Opposition parties of playing politics over dead bodies. Turning emotional, Shivakumar said that he had seen the young kids who died. 'No family can digest such an incident,' he said. On his participation in the program at the stadium after the tragedy, Shivakumar claimed that he did not have plans to attend it despite the invitation offered to him by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). 'I took the KSCA president and other members of the management in my car, and we closed the program in 10 minutes. I was not aware of the deaths until I reached the stadium… I went there and told them not to hold any function,' he said. Commenting on the allegations against the government, he said that the Opposition parties were only doing mischief. 'The BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) always play politics over dead bodies. That is their political agenda. We are deeply hurt. It is as if our own family members have died,' he said.

10 candidates in fray for Nilambur bypoll in Kerala

Kozhikode: The stage is set for Nilambur bypoll as the deadline to withdraw nominations ended on Thursday. Of the 14 nominations cleared after scrutiny, four candidates, including a namesake of former MLA PV Anvar, withdrew. This leaves 10 candidates in the fray. Anvar, running as an independent, has been given the scissors symbol. Both UDF and LDF see the election as a key political battle. For UDF, reclaiming its traditional stronghold is crucial for candidate Aryadan Shoukath — son of veteran leader Aryadan Mohammed, who held the seat for 34 years — and opposition leader VD Satheesan ahead of the upcoming local body and assembly elections. LDF aims to retain the seat with M Swaraj, reinforcing its pitch for a third consecutive govt in 2026. UDF has framed the election as a public verdict on what it calls the LDF govt's 'nine-year misrule'. It has also tried to highlight the LDF's alleged 'anti-Malappuram stance', citing past remarks by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, politburo member A Vijayaraghavan and other CPM leaders. LDF, on the other hand, is eager to retain the seat with Swaraj. A win would support its narrative of continued public trust in its development agenda and governance. The LDF also hopes to benefit from internal rifts within the UDF, especially around the Anvar issue. Meanwhile, for Anvar, delivering a strong performance is key to his political survival. Initially, BJP appeared undecided about contesting Nilambur bypoll, calling it inconsequential with the assembly term ending next year. However, the party eventually fielded former Kerala Congress leader Mohan George. The NDA's election campaign was launched by Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi on Thursday. The bypoll will be held on June 19 and the votes will be counted on June 23.
