Uproar over Hadi's poem blaming KL woes on DAP

The Star4 days ago
THE Dewan Rakyat descended into chaos when PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (PN-Marang) implied during his debate that Kuala Lumpur's problems were due to DAP and the unity government.
In his speech debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), he recited a poem in Malay containing the line: 'KL is problematic due to DAP, Pakatan Harapan and friends.'
The remark prompted Chong Zemin (PH-Kampar) and RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) to raise a point of order, asking presiding speaker Suhaizan Kaiat to address the matter.
Chong cited Standing Order 36 (1) to demand why Abdul Hadi was talking about matters unrelated to the 13MP.
Several PAS MPs then stood up and told Chong to sit down.
Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (PN-Besut) said it was up to Abdul Hadi to debate on any issues based on policies.
Chong replied that he wanted to know why Abdul Hadi was not talking about the 13MP.
A shouting match then ensued between Chong and several Perikatan Nastional MPs.
Several PAS MPs were heard shouting 'DAP is rude'.
Rayer responded by saying: 'Is it acceptable if I say PAS is Parti Ajaran Sesat? (PAS is a party of deviant teachings)', which angered the PAS MPs.
Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul who came in to replace Suhaizan ordered the MPs to sit down and told the next MP to continue with the debate.
However, Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) and Rayer were heard still talking. Johari then reprimanded both of them.
'What kind of people's representatives are you? Have you no shame? Very shameful of you all, shameful!' said Johari.

Tan ready to defend Likas seat

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): Likas assemblyman Datuk Tan Lee Fatt has expressed his readiness to defend his seat in the upcoming state elections. Tan, who has served two terms as a Democratic Action Party (DAP) assemblyman, said it is ultimately up to the people in his constituency to evaluate his performance. 'I have done my best to serve Likas, but in the end, it is for the people to judge my report card,' he said, while noting that the final decision on candidacy lies with the party leadership. He added that no official decision has yet been made on the candidate, but confirmed that DAP will defend the Likas state seat in the coming polls. Highlighting key issues faced by his constituents, Tan pointed to traffic congestion in the Kota Kinabalu area and stressed the need for a more effective public transportation system. 'With a smoother and more effective public transportation system, we can not only ease congestion but also reduce transportation costs for the people,' said the State Assistant Finance Minister. Tan was speaking to reporters after officiating the Doa Sayangi Malaysia programme at the Sri Pasupathinath Alayam temple in Bukit Padang on Sunday. The event, which featured the singing of national and state songs while carrying the national flag, was aimed at fostering unity and patriotism among people of various races and religions. Also present was Malaysia Hindu Sangam state council chairman Datuk Dr G. Mohan A. Gopal Naidoo.

On the rise: Bursa Malaysia expected to move upwards to the 1,590 level this week

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Bursa Malaysia is expected to rise this week towards the 1,590 resistance level, contingent on supportive global risk sentiment and incremental clarity over semiconductor tariff trajectories, said an analyst. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said that given the weekend timing of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Malaysia's equity market will absorb any geopolitical repricing effects when trading resumes next week. "Domestically, the investment narrative will be shaped by further disclosures on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) project allocations, while the approach of Budget 2026 -- now under two months away -- will heighten focus on stakeholder engagement sessions as potential precursors to fiscal policy direction ahead of the Prime Minister's parliamentary tabling,' he told Bernama. On the inflation front, Mohd Sedek said Malaysia's July Consumer Price Index (CPI), due for release on Friday, Aug 22, will offer the first high-frequency read on the pass-through impact of the broadened Sales and Service Tax (SST) regime. "We project headline CPI at 1.2 to 1.3 per cent year-on-year, up from 1.1 per cent in June, with core inflation expected to remain contained,' he said. Globally, Mohd Sedek said, investor attention is set to converge on Wednesday's release of the Federal Open Market Committee minutes and the Jackson Hole Symposium (Aug 21-23) -- both considered potential catalysts for repricing policy-rate expectations if a pivot narrative gains momentum. "Pre-Jackson Hole signalling from Washington has intensified, with the Trump administration adopting a more assertive communications posture than the Federal Reserve's (Fed) measured, data-dependent stance. "Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has escalated his call from a 50-basis-point cut to a cumulative 150-basis-point reduction, amplifying political pressure on the Fed. "This shift, combined with personnel changes at the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the nomination of dovish candidates to the Federal Reserve Board, reflects a coordinated strategy to influence Fed chair Jerome Powell's policy trajectory,' he said. He added that any eventual dovish recalibration could be positioned domestically as both a political and macroeconomic victory, reinforcing the administration's narrative of executive influence over monetary normalisation. On a weekly basis, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI rose 19.36 points to 1,576.34 on Friday from 1,556.98 a week earlier. The FBM Emas Index gained 129.27 points to 11,731.06, the FBMT 100 Index climbed 132.95 points to 11,512.86, the FBM Emas Shariah Index added 20.67 points to 11,654.85, the FBM 70 Index improved 155.15 points to 16,660.68, and the FBM ACE Index advanced 106.57 points to 4,713.45. By sector, the Financial Services Index rose 499.25 points to 18,080.07, the Plantation Index increased 77.91 points to 7,504.03, and the Energy Index went up 4.11 points to 740.83. Weekly turnover dropped to 11.10 billion units worth RM11.87 billion from 12.65 billion units worth RM11.65 billion in the previous week. The Main Market volume shrank to 7.16 billion units valued at RM11.06 billion compared with 7.66 billion units valued at RM10.61 billion previously. Warrants turnover declined to 3.37 billion units worth RM453.56 million from 3.62 billion units worth RM508.07 million in the preceding week. Ti Lian Ker wants to save BN, not 'sanitise' PAS like UMNO is sanitising DAP

FORMER MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker has clarified that his recent remarks were not aimed at 'sanitising' PAS, but rather to save BN, which he claims is being buried and replaced with 'UMDAP.' He accused Johor state assembly speaker Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi of twisting his comments on UMNO and PAS Youth. 'Since when did I sanitise PAS? I was merely pointing out that PAS Youth lately has been more courteous than UMNO Youth. Did I ever bring up past issues when I strongly opposed the 'resolution' that UMNO wanted to table at its General Assembly to shut down vernacular schools? 'But the one UMNO is trying to sanitise is DAP, that is explicit and certain! Many UMNO members and grassroots do not agree with the blatant attempt to sanitise DAP,' he said in a Facebook statement on Sunday. Responding to Puad's criticism, Ti added: 'Abang Puad! Don't be lazy to Google if you don't understand. Check the meaning of 'contemporary' and 'seems'. Don't overreact. Show maturity and stick to the topic.' —Aug 17, 2025 Main image: The Star
